Mini Windows PC (GOG Machine)
« on: August 05, 2016, 01:08:23 am »
Hey!

Thinking about buing a small and cheap PC to play something like Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Heroes III etc. I need it small, because I don't have much space on my table, and I need it cheap because why not? =)

Does anybody have any experience with running these games on Cherry Trail + Windows 10?  Do I need more then 2GB of memory for Windows 10 (It's being years since I used Windows). Any general suggestions.
Reading reviews and looks like everything is crap =( Intel Compute Stick -- bad. VOYO V3 -- bad. Kangaroo -- can't find it in the UK.

Maybe anybody have experience with older mini PCs (windows 7, Intel Atom) I can find on ebay?

Thank you!

I'd say go for industrial SBC-s (like Vortex86 or Geode CPU based boards), you should be able to find old ones quite cheap on ebay or other auction sites and also most of them require only single voltage PSU (most commonly 5V). The problem could be sound card which is not present or is AC97 compliant but without DOS drivers.

2GB ram is OK for 32bit Windoze 10 unless you will run several apps in bakground.
I didn't encounter any problems with dosbox on BayTrail (Asus T100TA- quad core Atom Z3740 1.33 GHz with 2GB ddr3). Everything up to Quake3/IOQuake3 runs fine, newer engines require lowering texture quality, Unreal3 based games are quite laggy but still playable.

I'd say don't buy anything that is based on Atom D or N series (especially NOT Atom N2600/2800 since it has barely-can-use-desktop and not supported in anything other than Win7 IGP), also none of BayTrail and CherryTrail Atoms have SATA/IDE onboard- system uses eMMC as primary storage which is not replaceable. Better -but I'm not sure if cheaper- option would be to buy Celeron N or Pentium N based system

Well...There's a dedicated board for the GPD Windows in this forum, but I don't know if at 360$ it falls in the "cheap" category.

Realistically speaking, if you aren't gonna be gaming on the go and you just want a small PC for your house, you should try to find a cheap netbook, there's some for like 100$ on Amazon, and they're quite small, any of them should be able to run everything you mentioned pretty alright, since even cheap low-end integrated CPUs are good enough for Windows XP era games :P

If you are looking for something small like that, maybe this will work:

https://www.amazon.com/MINIX-X5-Z8350-Dual-Band-Ethernet-Technology/dp/B0749NR2KJ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1508347392&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=mini+pc&psc=1

It's a tiny PC with Wifi.  Since you are not that experienced with Windows, you could probably run Linux on it and run those games in Wine.  They should be old enough.

As well, if you don't already have a Monitor, you could probably get something like this (keyboard is optional):
