Help with Zelda: Link's Awakening (Gnuboy)
« on: November 20, 2010, 06:42:55 pm »
I am stuck on Catfish's Maw dungeon. I cannot jump across the 4 tiles to get to the treasure chest. Maybe I haven't mastered the Dingoo's controls -- has anyone been able to get to that treasure chest? What's the secret to jumping that far?

I completed this on the A320 so it's not a bug.

If you give me map directions (ie up 4 squares and left 2 squares from the entrance) i can fire it up and give it a go. I've cleared this game a few times, it's one of my favourite games
Handhelds:

Tons of other old laptops and tablets.....

This isn't a game I've played so I've no idea on the gameplay side of this question, or even if this is gnuboy specific.

I'd suggest tackling this in 2 fronts:
1) check some of the Zelda FAQs http://www.zeldawiki.org/Catfish's_Maw mentions the level you are on but I've not checked it for your question.
2) Have you tried other emulators? If you are on a desktop, there are tons to choose from. If you only have the Dingoo, under native there is Joyrider's excellent port, there is http://code.google.com/p/gnuboy/ (you have to build this yourself at the moment), or http://code.google.com/p/gngb/ (you have to build this too, note gng with sound on Native dingoo is not quite full speed). There is also http://code.google.com/p/ohboy/ (menu rom loading screen isn;t working yet).

Actually isn't that the dungeon where you get the hookshot? I think it is, so that's how you cross 4 tile gaps (you can do 3 with the roc's feather and the pegasus boots)

Btw IIRC you get the hookshot after defeating the recurring stalfos boss, you have to find the empty rooms (he occurs in a different one each time). Once you have defeated him for the final time you get the hookshot

Thanks to everyone for responding. lemmywinks you are right, I totally forgot reading about the hook in the manual! I must've tried jumping that 4-tile gap with just the pegasus boot and feather until I nearly got blisters, and believe it or not I nearly made it once, thinking it was the Dingoo controls that held me back. This is the dungeon that you enter by swimming into the fish's mouth. So far I've only come across one emtpy room in this dungeon...I'll have to crawl it some more I guess. Can't wait...

I think I'm about 45-50% through the game. So far I've got the stick in my inventory (traded with monkey for bananas) and I know I have to search for the mermaid's necklace and the fisherman's hook. Oh yeah, I had just returned the ghost to the cemetery, and his departing words were to look inside the jar in the House by the Bay. I went back to that house but couldn't find the jar.

clach04 when you get a chance DO play this game. This, along with the other two Zelda titles (Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages), are some of the best games available on the Game Boy -- heck, on any platform, period!

You're right, the 3 GB/GBC titles are amazing games regardless of what platform they're on. They're easier than LTTP but still challenging, perfect for portable gaming IMO

Minish Cap is also a belter but i've had problems with that on some emulators - on my phone emus it crashes near the end of the game which is so frustrating! I haven't tried it on the Dingoo yet

Btw the ghost means lift up the pots in his house, there's a seashell in one of them
