Nintendo Virtual Boy on RG-350?
« on: November 14, 2020, 08:18:20 pm »
Hi everyone!
There's any plans to release a Virtual Boy emulator for the RG350?
I think the system may be pretty capable to run this console but there's no emulator available.

Did you try mednafen emulator ?

It seems to support virtual boy.

I made a port of Mednafen previously a while back and unfortunately it was quite slow so i disabled the VB core in later releases.
That said, mednafen itself was pretty unefficient and bloated so what i could do for the VB core is to take the libretro's core like i did for VBA Next, Mednafen's wonderswan core etc... and make it standalone.

It's possible but it requires quite some work unfortunately. I have it planned on my TODO list.

That's like 20% of the entire VirtualBoy game catalog.

I have released a beta version of it. It has some issues like the fact it doesn't support the second dpad so i will look into that later.
Check out how it runs here :
<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20210128152010/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0kNFrqv4v4" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0kNFrqv4v4</a>

You can find the OPK for it here :

It certainly runs much more smoothly than my previous attempt with Mednafen, hehehe

Thanks @gameblabla !!!

I tested on my RG350 with original firmware and it's working really good specially for a beta, as default i think the dual diretionals could be mapped on the analog joysticks.

One tip for those who will try the emulator: The roms should be unzipped.

I have released a new beta that fixes the issues plus maps the two dpads to the two analog sticks.
And yes, your roms should be unzipped for this one.

That is cool.  Too bad we don't have a good Vectrex Emu on the RG350M.  With the high res screen and ability to play vertically it would be perfect for it.

I have already released an update to Vecxemu a few days ago that now supports the increased resolution of the RG-350M and has a workaround for 320x480 screens :

Thank you so much for your continuing work gameblabla.

I haven't been able to get past the instructions and precautions screen on Nester's Funky Bowling and V-Tetris. Everything else works great.

I installed VecxEmu onto my 350M but can't seem to launch any games. They all go to a black screen. They all work fine on the Dingux port.

Thank you again for all your hard work!

The 350m is 640 x 480 not sure if that is an issue but it doesn't work, I just get a black screen after selecting a game.  Also because vectrex was a vertical oriented system there should be an option to rotate 90 deg and play vertical with the buttons mapped and the analog mapped as a Vectrex analog rotated 90Deg. This way you don't get a tiny image with big borders on the side.

Thanks for everything.

You need to have minestorm in /usr/local/home/.vecxemu and put it there as "rom.dat". Then you can run any supported Vectrex games.
I had rotation support for the basic SDL port but decided to temporarily remove it because i needed to make sure to support 320x480 screens too. Not sure what i will do for that one though...

Couldn't you make a specific version for the RG350/M ?  Those damn 351s and their weirdo resolutions ruin it for everything...

It seems a shame that a system that can be easily rotated to match and have a nice big image doesn't support it.
