Linux kernel 5.7 status?
« on: May 31, 2020, 09:59:27 am »
How's the development going on the linux 5.7 kernel for JZ4770 devices?

I understand these have been recent obstacles:

- IPU glitches
- DRM/KMS driver is incomplete (direct rendering manager and its kernel mode setting)

@pcercuei  - if you have a moment to give a quick status update, it would be greatly appreciated :)

It was great to see that you were able to implement HDMI on the GCW0's IT6610 HDMI transceiver chipset. Judging by the pdf datasheet of IT66121 (on the RG350, etc.), the implementation shouldn't be that much different, correct?

And just for some background, the RG350/PG2 are all running a linux 3.12 kernel from 2013. There will be a lot of potential benefits to updating the kernel and buildroot - such as performance increases, USB Mass Storage, etc.

I'm really looking forward to hearing about progress on 5.7! Please let us know when you have any more info.

@pcercuei would you consider releasing your compiled version of gpmark so people can test these various OS releases along with their speed claims?

It's been found thanks to hi-ban!

Is this the same as yours, @pcercuei ?

This sums up to a total of 342 patches that have been accepted upstream, and about two dozens still in the process of being upstreamed, for a diff of about 15k lines added and 7.5k lines removed.

Damn!!

For people worried about performance, the overhead of the OS is slightly lower, which means that games and emulators gain a few FPS with the 5.7 kernel vs. the old 3.12 kernel. When recompiled with the new toolchain, based on GCC 9, there is an extra small gain that adds up. This is with our super-secret optimization turned OFF, which once enabled, will give a good 10+% performance increase on top of that.

Thank you pcercuei <3
