@SMACHER

Have you read the below?

I would be a lot happier if they had gone with a Stoney Ridge APU. This only has 2 cores, 192 shaders, and a single DDR4 channel- much more capable of fitting into a handheld device.

For context, I own a Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet with a Haswell APU in it. This is a 22nm part (more efficient than AMD's 28nm parts), and even with active cooling it still throttles like crazy as soon as I start playing games on it.

my thoughts exactly, sent them this email...

I have been studying APUs for a while now and I feel I can conclude
that the current choice of APU might be a bad move.
The RX-421BD is the embedded version of the FX-8800P and even though
it is a powerful APU, it'll be severely TDP limited in a handheld
formfactor. From my testing with a larger laptop with active cooling,
the same APU constantly throttles to ~1.1GHz (CPU) in
multithreaded/GPU heavy workloads.
I am not an engineer but even I must point out the fact that even
Nvidia's Shield Handheld console had active cooling with a TDP
probably half of the RX-421BD.
This isn't to say that you guys are mistaken in making this product,
as a matter of fact, I truly hope you guys succeed! However it has to
be more right than wrong the first time around. Thus I propose this
APU:
http://products.amd.com/en-us/search/APU/AMD-A-Series-Processors/AMD-A6-Series-APU-for-Laptops/7th-Gen-A6-9210-APU/199

The reason this APU is more suitable in my opinion is due to it's dual
cores. Most games currently and the ones most likely to be played
smoothly on a 15W APU are still predominantly single threaded. So
having an APU with with more TDP headroom dedicated to higher CPU
frequency as opposed to more CPU cores might make a difference in
experience.

I would love to know why the top spec APU was chosen and how you guys
will gonna deal with the heat. I did read the kickstarter but I just
can't believe that passive cooling will suffice.

I'm a big apu fan and I try to blog about all things APU,
APUsilicon.com. I know it doesn't say much but I hope it shows that I
am sincerely hopeful about this product. Don't let me down.

For the next device, i think is to soon to talk about it. OEM dont have the examples, will see

@SMACHER If heat is an issue, SmachTeam has stated that they'll add a fan to the design to reduce temps further.  We can also disable 2 of the cores to further reduce heat and power consumption, while still having the benefit of a better GPU.  You obviously have more knowledge on the subject than I do, so I'll defer to your expertise.  Would these solutions be of any merit?

Hi!

After studying and analyzing the decision with the group of engineers, that was our best initial option to meet the expectations of the product. There are plenty of chips availables, and the technology that offered AMD seems balanced and adequate. In anyway and thanks to the clickarm technology, we are not closed to try other chips options in the short term, that's one of the big pros of this product.

Thanks for your feedback, we take note and learn a lot through it.

Hello!

The temperature will not be a problem. SMACH Team is more than aware of that (they're receiving a lot of feedback from backers asking about it), and thay said that if the device need an internal fan or several vents, the design allows to do it.

They're going to test it more time, and then decide about that issue (if it is an issue). So, one way or another, they'll fix it if they need to, so don't worry about that, they've plenty of options (all valid) to do so.

Thanks for your support.

It's a 15W part. You're going to need vents and probably a fan, there's no way around it.

Exactly, I don't mean to be confrontational but this is from a laptop with a lower end BR APu even after TDP throttling it is still drinking 25-30W

https://youtu.be/dJANwwHfQN4

Now imagine 2 more compute units and you can see that it'll need :
Active cooling
Large 40+Whr battery
Lower end but decent APU

I thjnk I enjoy the anticipation and reading the updates as much as actually receiving handhelds. This one though is really exciting. I will definitely give steam a go but I'm actually the most excited about emulation.

Didn't know about an indiego campaign. There was a kickstarter campaign that is now finished?

Hi Smacher, the option "Smacher Z + 16GB RAM" is great in KS however it doesn't exists in Indiegogo. Could you add that in?

and I'm wondering, how could we update our console in future (e.g. RAM and internal storage). I think the RAM and storage module are not the common laptop parts, right? They are only available through your website?
