I would be a lot happier if they had gone with a Stoney Ridge APU. This only has 2 cores, 192 shaders, and a single DDR4 channel- much more capable of fitting into a handheld device.

For context, I own a Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet with a Haswell APU in it. This is a 22nm part (more efficient than AMD's 28nm parts), and even with active cooling it still throttles like crazy as soon as I start playing games on it.

my thoughts exactly, sent them this email...
Quote
I have been studying APUs for a while now and I feel I can conclude
that the current choice of APU might be a bad move.
The RX-421BD is the embedded version of the FX-8800P and even though
it is a powerful APU, it'll be severely TDP limited in a handheld
formfactor. From my testing with a larger laptop with active cooling,
the same APU constantly throttles to ~1.1GHz (CPU) in
multithreaded/GPU heavy workloads.
I am not an engineer but even I must point out the fact that even
Nvidia's Shield Handheld console had active cooling with a TDP
probably half of the RX-421BD.
This isn't to say that you guys are mistaken in making this product,
as a matter of fact, I truly hope you guys succeed! However it has to
be more right than wrong the first time around. Thus I propose this
APU:
http://products.amd.com/en-us/search/APU/AMD-A-Series-Processors/AMD-A6-Series-APU-for-Laptops/7th-Gen-A6-9210-APU/199

The reason this APU is more suitable in my opinion is due to it's dual
cores. Most games currently and the ones most likely to be played
smoothly on a 15W APU are still predominantly single threaded. So
having an APU with with more TDP headroom dedicated to higher CPU
frequency as opposed to more CPU cores might make a difference in
experience.

I would love to know why the top spec APU was chosen and how you guys
will gonna deal with the heat. I did read the kickstarter but I just
can't believe that passive cooling will suffice.

I'm a big apu fan and I try to blog about all things APU,
APUsilicon.com. I know it doesn't say much but I hope it shows that I
am sincerely hopeful about this product. Don't let me down.

Your sincerely,

I hope this is good, I'll preorder this over a store that supports paypal instead of backing this. GPD taught me that much.

We are far past caring at this point...  Physical handheld may raise an eyebrow.

Games look good, but without a working/playable prototype then I'm not gonna believe in this thing.

They've been sucking the watering hole dry with mock-ups and gameplay footage for too many years.  A lot of us just let it go... My hope has gone to China.

I agree.  I wasn't impressed with the GPD Win and after playing BroForce on it for an hour my shoulders were hurting.  My Switch works just fine in handheld mode, so I expect the SmachZ would be the right form for me.  Just hope it comes out.

I think it was a couple of friends who thought they were smarter than everyone by funding some click-board thing and the handheld simultaneously and still make a fortune.  Then they couldn't agree on anything and split up.  Now one is still trying to make this thing become real.  Not sure it will, but I do believe he is trying.
