Poké Gear - Handheld Console
« on: May 05, 2019, 07:41:33 pm »

I bought one of this.

BTW, I find funny that they use the same name from this lol It seems to use the same housing of the Bittboy/Miyoo (or it is very similar).

However it seems a great device, I like its design, and hardware wise should be on par with a Bittboy/Miyoo or even better.

Looks like the bittboy (down to the exact same buttons, placements, micro sd slot) with a slightly modified CFW that uses the linux build perhaps.
I had released GPSP for the bittboy and boy, they did not waste time to use it...

But this costs half of the Bittboy. We should investigate, it may be a great handheld or something extremely horrendous.

Some people got their bittboy for 30$ or so. The bittboy team is also about to release their newer bittboy in both horizontal & vertical form factor with a fix for ghosting so they probably sold their older bittboys to some other company and that company refurbished them.
That or it's yet another company manufacturing them like what happened in Asia with Miyoo vs Bittboy.

I'm pretty damn sure that they are using my GPSP port because that menu looks like PocketNES and that feat is only possible on the bittboy by using the CFW + GPSP.

So probably it has an ARM heart, interesting.

Well, I've already seen this handheld in the past, but I don't remember if the New Bittboy/Miyoo was already on the market. It was always in the wild, it wasn't really popular.
Anyway the price is great if it isn't a nes on a chip.

Gilfer, a user on discord already owns one of it. This is what we know so far:

Any idea how to load roms into this thing properly? Tried it, but it loads only one rom, and is unable to save a game in any way. Also, it doesn't seem to recognize anything but gba roms.

Ok, the engrish manual seems to suggest to use GBATA to prepare the roms. Any tips? The device is useless unless it can at least play GBA games with save support (GB/GBC would also be nice, the manual says they should play, but no idea how).

On the plus side, the screen is nice and there seems to be plenty of cpu power to spare, GBA Doom2 (impossible on the RetroMini) ran fine.

Ok, figured it out, and it's the most awkward thing ever invented - once the game is SRAM patched, you need to use whatever save function the game offers, and pres the reset button on the console. Once it restarts, you enter the start menu, and press select to save. This will save the state of the rom, internal saves included, and you can turn the console off without losing your progress. Oh boy.

Still no idea how to play any other that GBA roms.

I also bought a Poke Gear but my New Bittboy is easier to use. I hope someone tells me how to put more roms of other systems because I do not know. And to save games either. Thank you all.

I have been eying this system for a while now and really like the case prints and price. However is it already confirmed these do not have 30Hz screen issues like the RS-97 plus or the ghostkey issues of the Bittboy V2?

As it has the same chipset as the Bittboy, is performance comparible?

The BittBoy is much, much better than this, and I wouldn't recommend the PokeGear to anyone unless you have a hard $20 limit on your purchase and really like the form factor. This $10 joke can do ten times more, and is better at everything.

- nasty cheap plastic
- can only hold one ROM at a time
- no savestates
- no options of any kind
- have to reflash the device (twice, if you want to back the current ROM savedata) each time you want to swap roms

It can run GBA Doom2 without problems, so the hardware probably is decent. If the GBA game supports some form of saving (like the Doom2 checkpoints), you can preserve those by hitting the R button, and once it restarts, you enter the start menu, and press select to save. This will save the state of the ROM, internal saves included, and you can turn the console off without losing your progress. I don't think it is possible to make it more awkward.

I still have no idea how to make it play any other than GBA ROMs, if someone has an idea, do tell.

And in the box it clearly appears that it plays roms of gbc, gba, fc, nes, gb, sms and game gear. Well I do not know how

Box of a chinese device not having an accurate description? Impossibru!

The seller of mine seems to be fairly talkative, hoping to get some info, though I'm not holding my breath - I mean, you load the roms onto the tf card, and the device needs to see them, if that doesn't work, there is not much else that can be tried.

Almost forgot, the screen is ok, seeing the viewing angles, I'm fairly sure it's ips. GBA games play nice, and you can use Goomba to play GB/GBC games, so the console isn't completely useless. Still, for some $12 more, you can have the BittBoy, which is worlds apart.

Yeah, the supplier has no idea, so I think it's very safe to treat support for other than GBA (and GB/GBC via Goomba) roms as a blatant lie. So unless someone puts together a custom firmware, this is pretty much worthless.

Note - you will be able to use the savestate function of a Goomba converted GB/GBC rom (hit X+Y to enter the menu), and if you save the rom state by hitting the R button, and once the console restarts, entering the start menu, and pressing select to save, the internal savestates will persist.

Does anyone know how to put games from other platforms to this device?
