Pocket go or ldk
« on: July 20, 2019, 05:16:23 pm »
I?m sorry, I?m sure this has been asked a bunch of times already. Does the ldk really play better than the pocket go? The pocket go looks like it?ll be more comfortable in your hands, but the ldk has an analogue ?stick?, AND comes in yellow  ;D

When you buy either off aliexpress do they come with the hundreds of games you see being shown on YouTube reviews?

The price difference is pretty minimal now, 29? for the PG or ?36 for the ldk.

Also, does the 32gb sd card yo7 can get with either one come with any extra games?

The pocket go has many issues. Screen tearing when playing games like Super Mario. Low refresh on the screen is the cause.  Whine from the speaker.  Light bleeds from the screen. Corrupt sd cards are common if you do not shut down the device properly. It seems to be a common issue with people who own the system. The LDK does not suffer from this issue.

The LDK has no screen tearing. No light bleed issues. The LDK landscape is in stereo and it sounds great. The LDK also has two gamepads. The downsides to the LDK is it comes with almost no games. You have to add your own roms to the system. This can be a super pain for games like Neo Geo system that requires a bios and arcade titles. The Pocket go comes with roms pre installed. This is a big plus for the system in my mind. Also the screen on the Pocket go is better then the LDK. The pocket go has a IPS screen. The LDK looks good bu the Pocket Go is better.

One other thing the LDK is very easy to remove the battery and get at the SD card. So adding and removing games is easy. I went with the LDK because its a lot less work and has a lot less issues.

Side note. The whine can be fixed somewhat on the pocket go. The light bleed issue can be fixed if your willing to open up the system and repair it yourself. The screen tearing is unlikely to be fixed. Hope this helps you out.

The Pocket Go speaker hiss is mitigated a bit in the new CFW. It should also be mentioned that the LDK landscape usually costs ~50% more than the Pocket Go. ($40 vs $60)

They both have similar small capacity batteries with substandard battery life. That's why I usually prefer playing the RS97 Plus, which has a significantly larger 1800mAh battery. That and the RS97 Plus is a little bigger and more comfortable to grip. RS97 Plus price falls in between the two aforementioned at around $50.

PS- In my opinion the excellent colors and contrast of the Pocket Go display is a fair trade off for the 30Hz related screen tear, given the low price of the device. In regular use I'm actually more bothered by the short battery life.

Haven't seen anybody mention the LCD panel quality yet.

BITTBOY/POCKET-GO (same screen):
- High quality IPS panel - seems to be true IPS and not VA-type, judging from the BTDF. No color shifts and only a very mild brightness notch at 45/135 degrees. In panelook terms, this is a 179/179/179/179 degree viewing angle panel.
- ~2.3 inch viewable area (measured)

LDK:
- TN panel, so relatively large gamma and color shifts when viewed off-axis.
- ~2.6" (LDK Game) or ~2.8" (LDK Landscape) (manufacturer specs)

Others have already covered the screen tearing / frame rate issues with the Bittboy - I can confirm these issues exist and are distracting when playing games with fast movement. My main use case for the Bittboy is playing a bunch of slow turn based stuff, so I find the beautiful panel / bad update tradeoff to be worthwhile. This is the nicest conventional LCD panel I've ever seen in a handheld. It is better than my Nintendo Switch (mid-tier VA) , better than my PSP2000/3000/Go (old mid-tier VA), and far superior to the AGS-101 screen (mid-tier TN family). The only handhelds that I own that really beat it in raw image quality are OLED devices like my first-gen Vita.

I don't have an LDK on hand to test against but my understanding is that the screen is properly updated at 60 hz v-sync. Additionally, the JZ4670(B) processor in both LDK variants is much higher performance and is currently better supported by devs than the ARM soc used in the Bittboy/Pocket-Go.

*Note: I have the bittboy and pocket-go. I do not have an LDK on hand to compare against, although I have a portrait version on the way. There are wide variations in TN panel quality, my personal scale goes from "completely unacceptable" (cheap FC handheld) to "ehh... good enough..." (Macbook Pro 2012). It is very hard to judge panel quality from pictures and youtube videos, so I'll hold off on final judgement until I have the device in my hands or somebody with access to an optics lab posts some BTDF measurements.

The obscure handhelds guy has a bit on the IPS/TN differences in feel in his latest post: https://obscurehandhelds.com/2019/07/is-the-rg300-king-of-the-jz4760b-handhelds/

QUICK RUNDOWN:
Bittboy/Pocket-go - beautiful slow games
LDK - fast games

My thoughts exactly - in terms of static image, I haven't had a handheld with a nicer looking display since the GP2X Wiz which was OLED (which I stupidly sold long ago and now miss dearly  :'().
