New 9 Inch Mini Arcade with Real Arcade Stick Powkiddy A12
« on: July 19, 2020, 07:44:51 pm »
Just got it. Took two weeks to arrive from China. I paid $85 USD.

It has real arcade stick, and 24mm arcade buttons. It is powered by Rockchip rk3128 with a customized version of Retroarch. CPS1/2/3 works fine, and PS seems to work fine for a few games I tested. N64 emulation is slow. SuperMario 64 runs but has sound issue. The screen quality is so-so though, not IPS.

Will open it up and take some pictures later. Hopefully can find a way to make CFW.

Update: adjusted the game icons' color so it is easier to see which emulator is selected.

I'm waiting mine too! It's very interesting... The fact that you can use the real aspect-ratio for the games with the oficial firmware is a deal-breaker. A CFW for this is a must, like the AIWO one.

there is a microswitch inside the machine that can put it into maskrom model to flash rom. It looks like CFW is possible.

Some website specify this as RK3326 device, 2 versions in the market? What uSB controller work with this? AnywayThe device is not bad at its price point, and it seem like budget housing, screen and joystick for arcade proj :Pect with more powerful processor.

Can someone explain in English what exactly the firmware adds/does differently as we do not have a link to a ReadMe or any kind of explanation in video. Without knowing what it does why would we want to flash new firmware? Does it fully unlock Retroarch so you can add cores (how?) Does it include drivers for USB WiFi dongles so we can update Retroarch online? Any tweaks to adding roms so we dont have to edit the XML ourselves manually?

Really want some information here!

The CFW enables the possibility of use of full Retroarch, with all the config options and cores. At first view all looks exactly like the OFW, but then, you go to the File Manager and search the file Retroarch.nes. Running it you are on full Retroarch and you can use all the cores and config options. This one includes a lot of cores not present on OFW (various FBA like FBA Neo, some MAME cores, Pc Engine, 8-bits computers, etc...). By now it's Retroarch 1.7.4, but they are looking to include 1.9.0 soon.

What I don't understand is that the stock firmware is such a half-done job. It looks nice but the games that are installed are a mix of Chinese, English and Japanese titles, half of them are not even complete. Donkey Kong doesn't have most of the sound, which  should be extremely easy to fix. A lot of games don't have the correct aspect ratio and it all feels really shoddily put together. Why didn't they just give a full list? With very decent hardware, why not give proper software? The "CFW" is just not good enough to be called custom at all. It allows you to start up another version of RetroArch but that's about it.  There are few cores with it and nothing is tuned to fit the A12 screen, which by the way is quite good. I'm tempted to just open the casing and put a Pie in it. At least with RetroPi the hardware can shine.

Well, in fact all the games (if the option Equal aspect is selected on screen options)can be played with their correct aspect ratio. It may appear that in some games a bit of the image is lost at the top and bottom of the screen, but, when some users opened the Powkiddy, they found that the black border of the internal plastic protector of the screen hides about 2mm from the top and bottom edges of the screen. The image shown on the screen is full, it's the protector border who hides some part of the image.

And yes, the OFW is a real mess. The problems with some roms are for using an old retroarch core (fba2012). With the CFW you can fix that selecting a different core (for example Fbneo or Mame2003) and you can play more systems (like Pc engine, for example) and you can use bezels to fill the screen. Yes, i know that the ideal thing is to do all that with the default menu system and not having to use a complete vanilla retroarch, but by now with this you can play all the games without problems and a wide selection of systems (including 8-bits computers, X68000, PC98, Wonderswan, etc, etc...) that aren't supported in the OFW.

Several users of the Ruka team's telegram channel have been looking for IPS screens of these characteristics for months. The only chinese shop selling 'real' 1024x600 9" 50 pins IPS screens that we found was Yoycart. At first, the price was about 40 euros, but they raised it to the actual one seeing the increasing demand.
