I quite like the kooky design, with the vertically aligned buttons on the right hand side it looks like a digital photo frame you can take down from the shelf and play games on.

Plastic looks cheap as hell and I'll bet that stick is a dpad mirror, probably just a single speaker too.

Interesting item for sure.  Not a gpd by any stretch. They didn't even cover the screw holes on the side.  Easy to fix.

The Android is a strong selling point as you can always side load Robert Broglia's series of .EMU emulators if there's no Google  Play like on the Tlex. So you know the gaming will be smooth.

The big question is durability of the console and response of dpad and buttons.  How long can you play without it being uncomfortable?

Is that worth the 45 dollar gamble?  Hmmm

That thing has been around for years now. They must have had a giant warehouse of them and have slowly been selling off the stock they haven't already sold.

Makes sense.  What was the name of the old ones.  I'd like to Google it and find out more on it.

I've never seen it before so would be interested to know the original name too. I remember the JXD S7100 which looked kinda similar but not this one.

If all you can afford is ?35 then I don't think you can do better than this or the Tlex Ulike, at least they will play PS1 and Snes pretty well.

I believe it is the JXD S7100, just with a different shell

I don't think it's the s7100, it has shoulder buttons, a different control layout and the row of buttons on the right. Not the same board but very similar specs.

Definitely weird to see such an old chip in a device in 2018!

I bought a tlex ulike and it was junk. that does not mean they all are, the one i got though was. the tlex if working properly has way more power than the rs-97 and technically can do more. What the tlex won't have is community support. You also don't know if the controls are any good. personally, I would take the rs-97 anyday.

I would wait until there are more reviews of the Tlex, Retro Core's was pretty good. Ancient ARM or MIPS devices are still ancient though, remember the RS-97 can't do full speed Snes, GBA or even moderate speed PS1. Neither are going to be great as your main emulation handheld.

Personally I would save a bit more and grab a GPD XD, may be some good used deals on older ones when the new version is released.

Ok so i finally recieved this thing and i can say that it is a huge letdown.  The only pro is that it is cheap and that it is 7 inches but personally if you want emulation that works ok then get a RS-97 instead for a similar price or spend more and get a GPD XD.

Problems.

Lack of memory means that the thing is dog slow.  So slow that it is near unusable.  I had to actively search for a Snes emulator that actually ran at fullspeed.

SuperRetro16 was the only one that worked well on it for me.  Snes9x EX & John Snes ran terribly slow.

Battery life is terrible on this thing.  By that i mean half an hour to an hour max.

L and R buttons are extremely uncomfortable.

Also Start, Select and the Analog seem to be a different joypad to the D pad, a,b,c,d,l,r buttons so certain emulators do not work well with it.

i mean, despite what the youtube reviews might say - you can surely tell from just looking at it that's it's going to be absolute junk. the ridiculously low price tag would confirm the same.

Those specs were fine on the JXD S601, played PS1 pretty well and lots of N64 titles were playable with frameskip. I think that had Android 2.3 though which will have been less resource heavy. Maybe try to find older versions of Snes9X and epsxe/fpse to sideload?

In the youtube review it does not look that bad. N64 seems to be ok. And a 512MB 1ghz A9 is not really that bad.
Those old games run at 2-32 mhz.
