Author Topic: BittBoy 3.5 Randomly Booting to Black Screen Fix (BittBoy 3.5 Only)  (Read 6099 times)

I have (2) Ver 3.5 BittBoys. They are both on Ver 3.9 CFW. They both randomly
boot to a black screen (sometimes a gray screen). When they boot to a black
screen I still hear the 'ding' when the green BittBoy logo should be displayed.
So I safety shut down the BittBoy by holding the 'R' button (after hearing the
'ding') for about 3 or 4 seconds, then press the 'A' button, then finally slide
the power switch off. Then I slide the power switch back on and hope that it
boots up. If it doesn't I repeat this process until it finally boots up.

This is a real pain!!!!

Well I have found a fix that is working on both of my Ver 3.5 BittBoys and would
like to share it with anyone who is having this problem.

Solution that worked for me:
-Make sure BittBoy is turned off
-Eject the microSD card and plug it into your computer (I have Windows 10)
-Go to the file explorer, and you will see several partition pop up. We want to
be at  the Main partition (the one with the ROMS, GAMES, EMUS, etc. folders)
-Navigate to the \KERNEL folder
-You will see two files in the KERNEL folder: Daemon + R61520FB.KO
-Rename the R61520FB.KO (I renamed it to XXXR61520FB.KO)
-Copy the replacement R61520FB.KO file I have provided to that same folder
-Eject the microSD from your computer, insert into your Ver 3.5 BittBoy, turn on
and it should boot up every time now.

Thanks for sharing the solution. You saved my bittboy. Where is the replacement kernel file originates from? Will this ko file work only with cfw 3.9 or with 3.8., 4.0 as well?
Have you tried to delete the boot logo file and then boot the system ? Booting will be much faster without the logo animation.

I'm glad it worked for you. The R61520FB.KO replacement file is actually from the Bittboy Ver3 (not 3.5) CFW v3.9 image. Yes, I also deleted the boot logo file, and it boots up much quicker.
Another tip: To improve the crappy NES emulator on the BittBoy Ver3.5, use the one that was just released this week for the Pocket Go (CFW 1.2). It runs NES really well.

Glad to help you.
MAME4ALL (Arcade) works pretty well on the RS-97. Games like Donkey Kong and Popeye display with the correct Aspect Ratio. Not so on the BittBoy. Is there anyone out there who can figure out how to fix this on the BittBoy?

You should publish this guide in various forums like on discord or facebook. Lots of people have issues with the 3.5 (inculding me) and i can confirm that this .KO file works. Thanks again! By the way i dont understand why a new kernel file was not released officially until now.

I think that when they released the PocketGo, they stopped caring about the Old
BittBoy. I posted requests several times on Dingoonity forums for a solution, but they
went unanswered. I'm not on Facebook, and was briefly on Discord, but dropped out of it.
(Was a little too hectic for me) Don't forget that these devs that work on these
Chinese handhels are doing it for the love of the hobby and not for a salary.
So I started to tinker around with it myself and came up with that solution (purely by
luck). I love the form factor of the BittBoy and have no intention of buying a PocketGo.

Yesterday someone posted this:

I tried the Screen_Tearing_3.zip and that fixed some of the BittBoy 3.5 screen tearing and works without the startup problem.......give it a try (it works great for me)

The Bittboy ver.3.5. had some serious upgrades in the past weeks:

-booting issue fixed
-screen tearing issue fixed
-buzzing noise from speaker fixed

So the tiny Bittboy is going to be perfect.  8)
