Advice wanted: Purchasing a retro handheld for a friend
« on: November 14, 2019, 09:02:44 am »
I could use some advice buying a retro handheld for a friend. Here's what I want, roughly in order of importance:
  • Nice, simple UI (can be CFW, too) - I don't need 20+ unplayed systems cluttering the interface. Favourites (for quick boot of a small list of selected games) would be a big plus.
  • Looks & Aesthetics - Nice build quality. Retro Nintendo design is a plus.
  • Screen & size - Screen size at least 2.6" (bigger is better), and device at least big enough to play comfortable for a few hours.
  • Performance - Should emulate classic game systems up to the SNES well enough to actually have fun playing.
  • Availability - It has to arrive in time for xmas, and orders from China to Germany can get stuck in customs for weeks.
  • Price - Aiming for 60 USD here, willing to pay more if it's worth it. Willing to pay less if I can get what I want for less money.

Here's what I came up with so far:
  • Anbernic RG-300 - Looks nice, safe for the ABXY buttons which are pretty ugly (not a biggie if I can replace them). UI (RetroFW) looks pretty cluttered to me.
  • Anbernic RG-350 - Also nice looking. Unsure about the placement of the DPAD (some people complained).
  • Bittboy New Pocket Go - Looks perfect (unsure about the UI, tho). Will not arrive in time. Ugh.
  • Bittboy Pocket Go - Nice looks, but too small to play comfortable (I think). Also very small screen.
  • Retroflag GPi + Pi Zero W - Perfect UI with Recalbox or RetroPie. Pretty expensive. Also no recharging the battery via the device.
  • Android based devices (your recommendations?) - Maybe too expensive. Android should allow for a lot of customization, tho, which would be a big plus.

So.... any ideas?

100 USD is the absolute maximum. And I can't buy a used console (refurbished is pkay, though).

i thought the gkd350h would've had some release announcement by now.  don't know much about powkiddy x18 but that sounds like it might be a good android option given the price.  the rg-350 would be a solid choice.  if your friend doesn't have huge hands then the pocketgo is a comfy little handheld although the snes performance is lacking plus the tiny screen is not really suited for extended play time
