October approaches! Any horror game recommendations?
« on: October 01, 2015, 04:09:23 am »
Every single year around this time, I start making these grand plans in my head of all the horror games I should play to celebrate October/Halloween. It never happens. I also end up getting bummed because for some reason, every other month has new horror game releases, but October almost always ends up devoid of them due to delays because of all the AAA games coming out this month. I'm going to give it another try this year, but was wondering if anyone out there had any recommendations for things that are worth playing or if anyone else out there tries anything like this.

I usually start off trying to play through Amnesia, Silent Hill, or Resident Evil 2 just to get myself motivated, but something inevitably derails me. Either a crazy work schedule, having to do a lot of things around the house, or feeling obligated to check out the big fall games. I'm thinking of starting off this time with Alien: Isolation, since I hear great things about it and only played it for maybe 3-4 hours when it came out.

tl;dr -  does anyone have any horror game recommendations (preferably not Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Amnesia)/do you have any October/Halloween gaming traditions?
Do you know where I can find some sailors?

I've started replaying Dementium 2 on the DS recently, also try the Clock Tower games. You just missed the Penumbra series sale on Steam too, those are worth playing.

If you spend $3 or more in the Indiegala store at the moment you get Deadly Premonition for free, it's well worth grabbing. It's usually more than that on it's own even in sales:

The Forbidden Siren games for PS2 are also worth getting, not too expensive either.

Also the original Alien vs Predator on PC, the Marine campaign is a scarier experience than many actual horror games as you're forced to use flares as light sources and the Aliens move faster than you, the GoG version is the one to get. The sequel and remake are pretty good too, the remake is usually very cheap on Steam.

I think I might have played Alien Vs Predator online with someone on Twitch earlier this year. I remember really enjoying the movement with the Aliens and the stealth part with the predator. The marine campaign is almost TOO tense for me at times, since you cant really see and have to rely on the motion tracker. I'll probably give that a chance again before Fatal Frame since that game is kind of pricy now I think and I'm paranoid about ps2 emulation not working properly throughout the entire game.

Here's an update! A friend shipped me an old sound card they had because my onboard sound card was broken, so one of the first games I used to test it out was Alien Vs Predator. It still holds up and its still just as creepy when you have to decide to make the trade between using either nightvision or your motion tracker. I had also forgot about how fun that survival mode was!

Yeah I have the first Dementium too but don't like it as much, respawning enemies and barely any save points make it a chore to play. The sequel (and also Moon) are great though.

It's a shame that Cult County was pretty much canned, the 3DS needs some fps and horror games.

Dementium 2 HD is on Steam, I have it and it looks decent enough although it's horribly optimised considering the graphics, my netbook can play Skyrim at 30fps but struggles with D2 HD! I only paid about ?2 for it in a Steam sale though so can't really complain, tbh I'd rather play it on the DS anyway.

I don't think Renegade Kid have the budget for a big PC/Console game, they'll probably just stick to lower priced Steam and eShop games for the time being. I think they were trying to break out a bit with Cult County but the Kickstarter failed big time, shame as it looked like a cool game albeit more of a budget title. Along with Shin'en they're my favourite handheld developers, both studios always produce some really cool games.
