what do I need to run CPS3 roms?
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:59:55 pm »
Hi everybody.

I have some CPS3 roms which I'd like to play.
I'm trying to use afba
I can run Neogeo roms if I set the neogeo.zip (file which contains BIOS) in afba/roms directory.
But, what about emulating CPS3? do I need something special?
When I try to play them the screen keeps in black and nothing happens, it doesn't matterif I touch <coins> virtual button or so.

PD: I guess it has to do with the format.

Thanks in advance.

I can get Street Fighter 3 Third Strike to run through Final Burn but I just cannot for the life of me remember how I did it. I don't remember if I needed a BIOS or not.

I am not sure how much info I can give on the rom, but mine is about 75mb.

App info on FBA says it is version 1.6.

Sorry I can't be more help. I'll try to remember how I got it to work. Might just need to see what BIOS files I have that you don't.

Which games are you trying/have you tried to run? What happens when you try them?

Street Figther III, but I also tried Jojo.
Maybe the rom isn't in the correct format.
When starts the screen gets black and I only see the virtual buttons
it seems it was loading some files contained in the .zip previously but nothing happens.
Anyway, don't worry, I will keep looking for info.

I was reading up on FBA and didn't see anything that indicated you needed a special BIOS for CPS3. For Neo Geo, yes, you do. But I could have missed something.

Like I mentioned, you may not have the right romset. The one I downloaded was sfiii3u.zip and is approximately 75mb. I don't think there are parent roms needed although FBA says you need SFiii3 (no zip ext., which is odd) but I don't have that.

There's also a version of Final Burn called Fba4droid. Current version is 1.65. Just installed it and it too runs SFIII Third Strike. So maybe give that a shot. You can get it here: http://www.emucr.com/2013/07/fba4droid-v165.html

Try with Retroarch and FBA core. Use a romset from a mame at least 0.150. And CPS3 games will work.

Or with latest fba4droid which is this:

It seems I was using a wrong romset.

I've read it should work with MAME 0.144 romset or above.

I think I've tried with a 0.144 rom but it didn't work (maybe I'm wrong and it wasn't 0.144).

I've just tried with Mame 0.151 romset (again, I'm not sure if it's 0.151 truly) but it works.

Thank you all.

If they're anything like MAME4Droid, then you'll either need to use the "No CD" versions of the rom, which are larger and their filenames ends with "n", so sfiiin.zip for example, otherwise you'll need the .chd file to go along with the rom. The chd is the CD/HDD file from the arcade machine and contains all the data needed. Might explain your black screens.

I'm using only "No CD" versions for my roms, except for Warzard/Red Earth... For some reason that would give me a black screen until I switched to the chd version.

If you do decide to use MAME4Droid instead, the games initially run like dogs, so you need to push select+start and in the menu that comes up, go down to "speed hacks" and pick whichever suits. :)

Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation.

Sometimes I have trouble understanding some English, I just know some basics.

Let me make sure I understood correctly.

1- I need "no cd" versions With Mame which are identified ending with -n.zip, right?
2- If I would be using a .chd file I will need two files, one .chd and a little file size (100Kb aprox) original-name.zip, right?
3 - Must .chd have the same name than the .zip file?
4 - The .chd version works in aFBA or Mame?
5 - where's that speed hack? I didn't try it yet using mame but I don't see the option you mean.

Thanks in advance.

No problems. Let me answer your questions in the same way :D

1) That's correct. The easiest way to find them is to google "Street Fighter Third Strike no cd mame" or something similar.
2) Also correct. It also just sits in the same folder as the .zip file (for Mame4Droid anyway. Dunno about FBA)
3) I'm not 100% sure on this. For example, Red Earth was called Warzard in Japan, and my .chd is called Warzard I think. If you use a certain place that's a "paradise for emulators" it will tell you what's needed for each rom. Be it bios, chd etc.
4) I've only used FBA once, but I noticed it lacked support for some Konami games I wanted, so I went with MAME4Droid... So I dunno if they're used for FBA to be honest.
5) OK, here's some images to help you. You HAVE to be in the game first for the options to appear. And if you have to do it again each time you play. Also, for some reason, when you have this setting on, it takes a while for the game to quit, so it's quicker to switch back to "safe" and then quit. Haha.

OK, so you have your CPS3 game on the list.

Then press SELECT and START at the same time and this menu will pop up. Scroll down to SPEED HACKS

Lastly, select the speed and go. These hacks also work on some other games that don't play smoothly with this emulator. Sometimes the hacks have a negative effect on sound and the like though. Note the last 2 options say (CPS3)... They work the best.

I loved the latest fba johannes share, but is there anyway to alter the virtual pad setting to just have credit and start?

Managed to achieve my goal somewhat...

Transparency full, , scale down everything, all buttons to a corner and left start + credit to a place I could use. It's ok I guess.
