7800 - USB GPS
« on: March 25, 2014, 03:57:58 pm »
Just thought I'd share that it seems it's possible to get USB (OTG) based GPS working on the 7800

I still need to test it out but it looks promising since wigle now claims it's getting valid GPS loc data.

Guy on XDA made a app for it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143329&page=8

Im using a Pharos GPS-500, which came bundled with MS streets and trips 08.

Near as I can tell it's actually based on a prolific 2303 receiver.. so I think it's actually a serial (rs232) unit with a usb->rs232 converter.

Don't quote me on any of this.

But if you have a USB gps receiver it's worth giving it a shot, I'll report back after more testing.

Confirmed working.. at least with the USB dongle I've got.

Google maps works.
Wigle war driving works.

I also loaded up 2 GPS test apps.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest
and
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androits.gps.test.free

Neither one of those will show Satellites, But other information appears to be correct.
Speed was pretty accurate.

I think what's going on is the app interfaces with the dongle, and then pushes the location info thru the android location framework.. so app's that try to get info directly don't work... at least this is my theory.

I think that's why I can't find any Sat.'s with the test app but everything else shows up.

Anyway those with usb gps dongles give it a try maybe you'll get lucky.
