What device has the LARGEST 320x240 screen?
« on: April 22, 2021, 04:01:59 pm »
I just purchased a RG 350P and an RG 350M and I have to say I like the 350P way better. Why? Because the screen has a lower resolution. This means the 8 and 16 bit systems (and most 32 bit PS1 games) run at their native 1:1 resolution, instead of stretched and upscaled to fit a 640x480 or higher res screen. The games look so razor sharp and crisp, and "pixel perfect" on the 320x240 screens.

I really like the 350P; it almost runs Super Mario RPG at full speed (if using a 2017 release of pocketSNES instead of one of the newer ones), but I would enjoy a somewhat larger screen. the N3DS XL when hacked has a bigger screen, and the low resolution means it runs SNES, NES, Genesis, etc at their native pixel perfect resolution. However I don't really like the speakers on the n3DS XL, and I would prefer a Linux/Dingoo device.

Is there a device out there with a 320x240 screen that's larger than the 350P? This has been surprisingly hard to google. Preferably with an IPS or even an OLED screen (I hate the blurryness of TN panels with retro games). I really fear that most of the new devices that will come out in the future will have 640x480 or higher res screens which is really  unfortunate in my humble opinion. Not everyone wants to emulate Dreamcast on the go. I just want SNES games to look pixel perfect!

I would really appreciate any info. Thanks so much!

SNES will look much better on 640x480 than it will on 320x240, by the way.

I agree with you on the low res. I own both the P and the M and the P has a better screen for low res games.

I have both the 350P and 350M next to each other running the same SNES game and same SNES emulator, and SNES looks WAY WAY better on the 350P.

I believe it's because on the 640x480 screen, it needs to "blow up" the SNES image so it fits full screen. On the 350P, it's running extremely close to the native SNES resolution, and it does not need to be blown up at all.

On the 350M SNES games look all pixelated and emulator-like. On the 350P, they look pixel perfect.

I appreciate the response. It looks like that spreadsheet tells you EVERYTHING....except the screen size. haha! So close. But thank you anyway!

On the 350M SNES games look all pixelated and emulator-like. On the 350P, they look pixel perfect.

Your scaling settings will have a big impact on this, regardless of which screen you use. Unscaled SNES on a 240p screen will be pixel perfect, but if you force the 224p to scale to 240p, it's not going to look as good as a scaled image on a 480p screen. An integer-scaled image on a 480p screen will look very comparable to an unscaled image on a 240p screen, to the point that it should probably be considered a matter of taste.

I have a few photographs of the mario sprite in another thread: https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/480x320-screens/msg195065/#msg195065

Most of those images are pixel-perfect, with integer scaling (2x) on the 480p RG350m, and (3x) on the 720p Shield Portable.

A person with normal eyesight probably won't detect that 4 pixels, or 9 pixels, are being used to represent a single pixel on the 480p and 720p displays. In actual use, I think they all look very good, but I'm going to use the 350m unless I'm feeling nostalgic.

Edit: While it doesn't meet the criteria you put forward in the OP, the Dsi XL probably has the chunkiest pixels you can find on a handheld.  256 by 192 pixels stretched to fit a 4.2 inch screen.
