RetroFW installation issue on RG300 v1.3
« on: September 13, 2019, 02:12:05 am »
I just received my RG300 in the mail today. After flashing RetroFW 1.2 (the latest public release) to a microSD (a SanDisk Class 10 64GB that I bought off Newegg) and popping it back in, I get a blank white screen upon powering it up. I'm aware of the ComicBook firmware, but I don't like its interface. I much prefer the GMenu2X type.
By the way, the date 2019.6.3 is printed near the internal microSD, which feels relevant.

Thanks

Where did you download the firmware? Ihave the exact same version of the RG300 and downloaded it from here: https://jutleys.wixsite.com/retrogamers97-90/post/ldk-retrofw-useless-v1-6-clear-yellow (make sure you click on the right version see the image. Also, how did you copied to your sd card? I use etcher (balena etcher for windows), always works flawlessly.

I got the firmware from Jutley's site and used Win32DiskImager to write my microSD. I'll try it again with etcher to see if it works that way.

If you have AV on your PC that scans USB drives it can get in the way of writing images to SD so you may want to look at disabling that when you do it.

Good lead. Also, if I were to indeed flash the ComicBook FW, could I switch to the GMenu launcher\interface afterwards?

If that doesn't work, try another sd card as some are prone to not boot. I've encountered that also with my raspberry.

Just tried it with RetroFW for RG300 through balenaEtcher to a different microSD. Still blank and white, BUT the brightness controls worked, leading me to speculate that the screen is new\different.

You can change the skin to the default one if you want.

This is the firmware I am using on my RG300 V1.3 :

Update: Just had the idea to load ROMs (and other external assets) from the outside microSD slot for now.
Just booted it up fine with the microSD it shipped with (which I should have tried way earlier). It has a stylised RG for a boot logo and uses GMenuNX as the launcher, with nearly every available IPK already installed. There are no ROMs naughtily preloaded.
This would be excellent if not for the fact that I wish to use a larger microSD that was purchased for this system.

You can always create an image from the original sd card and then burn it on a larger one. Afterwards, you need to enlargen the partition with something like minitool partition (when using windows) or gparted (for Linux) as it will be a 1-1 copy of the original.

I believe there is something wrong with the original download - try it again and compare the amount of bytes. Or download it from another place

Also White screen for me. RG_300_V1.3 2019.6.3
I have made a backup of the original Chinese firmware with no roms and zipped it but it is still 4.31GB so hard to upload i will try to shrink the partitions and re-zip.
On a side note the LDK RetroFW boots on it but i have not had any time for testing yet.

The LDK 2.1b RetroFW works on this system but the screen flickers slightly and is not as bright or clear as the the shipped non-RetroFW. The rest of the firmware works as it should. I believe there may have been a screen change as i have tested a few firmwares that are stated for this device and they all result in a white screen. The screen on the default firmware is bright and responsive but the rest of the firmware is rubbish.

Jellyfish if you have RetroFW on your device could you backup the firmware with Win32DiskImager and upload. I did this by making a dummy img file then selecting it, once you confirm the correct sd is selected click read. You can confirm the img is good by writing to another sd of same or larger size. Then you could use a partition tool to shrink the large partition and read again then Zip and upload. Hope this makes sense.

Disregard all previous from me. Using the firmware direct from Github with the RetroGame_v2.1_B.bat worked the best for me.
