Preliminary modding writeup (research and investigations)

This short write up will detail my findings on replacing the EXT port with a micro usb port and a battery replacement.

Replacing EXT with micro usb

I am planning on making this micro usb port fully functional with data transfer. I anticipate that the charge points will be easily located with a multimeter.

The data points will be a little bit harder.

Here are the tools you will need
  • Soldering Iron and solder
  • Wires. 5 colours
  • Micro USB breakout board

Will be using some black coloured sugru to make everything look nice by closing any gaps

Battery mod

Will require the removing of bits of plastics on the back case/shell

Will require de-soldering of the faux-GBA cart connector

Will require removing some bits of plastics on the faux GBA cart (this is to preserve the exterior look however this means you will not be able to remove & insert the faux-GBA cart any more)

Will require soldering of the board of the faux-GBA cart directly onto the main board

The battery I have located will fit with some space allowance leftover.

Search for 323896 polymer battery on your commerce platform of choice. This is a ~1800mah battery. Might be possible to fit in a larger battery but I do not have accurate measurements yet hence this battery is the only battery that I can say with 99% certainty will fit.

seeing as how the device already has a usb port with data, what is the advantage to adding another? will the new port have functions the other does not?  If it could be used to create peer to peer networking, then that would be something. I apologize, i'm not trying to come down on your effort. I just don't see the need for redundency unless thier is something i'm missing. Either way, best of luck and hope it all turns out good.

The benefit is simply because lots of us already have a bunch of micro usb cable lying around. Having a micro usb port makes it a lot more convenient. For instance, I can just use the same cable for charging my phone and the RS-97

I'm not going to do anything such as P2P because that will require software and I don't do that.

I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/Bonayuanda-Female-Connector-Adapater-Converter/dp/B01JA75J18/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1523847004&sr=1-3&keywords=micro+usb+to+mini+usb+adapter

I have a bunch of retractable cables that have usb c, micro usb, and lightning. Keeping the adapters with them allows me to charge basically any of my devices that don?t have a proprietary or barrel connector from a single cable.

I wonder if we could bring this even further into 2018 standards by using USB Type C. I have pretty much replaced all my electronics with devices using Type C connection so even micro USB is a legacy connection for me.

It can be adapted to use a USB C port. I chose not to do so because the only USB C device I have is a portable battery charger (power bank)
