new RS-97 units labelled 2.1 roaming around ?
« on: October 04, 2018, 02:50:41 am »
EDIT: Useless-RS97 now supports those new revisions, as well as fixes for the flashing issue.
Make sure however to update to the latest service pack to fix the flashing issue.

You can grab Useless-RS97 here :
https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/uselessrs97-internal-firmware-for-revision-2-1/

==========================

Someone on discord gave me several photos of his RS-97, including a complete teardown of it :

Hello, I had ordered on of this one week ago and I've just formatted the internal sd card :(
Fortunately I reached a good firmware to run intstall opendingux. Here you are the name of the file:

firmware14_rs97_new21_JZ4760B

Mostly of the emulators and games are running well although the LCD doesn't work properly. The screen is always making flashes when I'm playing GBA and FBA games.

Maybe someone is in my situation. I'm not sure if firmware is totally correct.
Thanks

That's my custom firmware and that version had a few issues, so i had to remove the download links.
1.4.1 will fix those issues but no one tried it on 2.1 new units yet.
The screen should most definitely not flash...  That does happen only with reGBA, GPSP and FBA ?
Once i uploaded firmware 1.41, i would suggest you try it again.

Sounds great!
I'm not sure if only happened in gba and fba emulators. I didn't try all of them
By the way, you made a good job and I'm already waiting for an update
Any news?

thanks a lot!

I tried version 1.41 with "2.1 new units".
After the emulator starts up, the screen always flashes.(GBA/FBA/NEOGEO etc.)

What about a game like Quake ? Does it flash too ?
Also, which FBA are you talking about, FBA-GCW (the one with its own GUI) or FBA-A320 (which uses the file selector) ?

Quake works normally.

What I tried is below
  FBA-GCW0(Arcade)        : flashes          /  FBA-A320(Arcade)            : no problem  /  GPSP(GBA)             : flashes
  MAME4ALL                        : no problem  /  Master System(SMS/GG) : no problem  /  GnGeo(NEOGEO) : flashes
  Race(NEOGEO Pocket) : flashes

I received a new RS-97 yesterday and I can confirm the above symptoms. The PCB shows version 2.1 without any markings on the LCD. A few other tests that I tried to do some troubleshooting:
- Change CPU frequency
- Change PAL/NTSC output
- Connected/disconnected to charger
None of which helped. The firmware works great otherwise, and the rest of the emulation is spot on.

The speed / fluency looks correct, it just seems the LCD is turning on and off rapidly.

Interesting to note: The original gameboy (color)  emulator had incorrect aspect ratios and terrible sound. That was the reason why I switched to your firmware within 15 minutes of starting up the unit for the first time.

Hello,

I just bought the same unit as you and ran into the same issues :(
I have also formatted the internal SD card so now I'm here with flashing screens.

If we put back the stock firmware and use the external method will the screen work ok?
Does anyone have the stock firmware please?

Thank you mates!

Alright, so I just bought one of these as well, I have noticed that SNES does not show the flickering if I choose "Original" aspect ratio vs "FS Fast". Just to clarify, the flashing looks like a super low refresh rate, it really bothers my eyes. The menu does not look super great on this compared to my 1.0s, but games actually look really crisp and have great contrast, except for the flickering of course. Quake, SNES Original Aspect Ratio, megadrive, and FBA look good. SORR, SNES FS Fast, NeoGeo, etc has bad flickering, Also, this screen is matte vs gloss on my other RS-97, and seems to have vertical scanlines.

Do you have the original firmware? If yes will it be possible to put it on something like dropbox?

Foolishly I did not back up the microSD, had this been my first one I would have, but this being my second device and knowing they had stock firmware available I didn't this time...

Thank you for the reply.
For me it's my first device, so I do not really know what to do to fix the flashing screen.

Flash another useless custom firmware? But which one?
Do you have any idea?

Thank you.

Guys, just saying that Useless-RS97 does now support those new units.

http://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/uselessrs97-internal-firmware-for-revision-2-1/

As for the flashes issue, it was caused by steward fu's graphical routines :
Code: [Select]
uint32_t *s = (uint32_t*)Source_screen->pixels;
uint32_t *d = (uint32_t*)Destination_Screen->pixels;
for(y=0; y<240; y++)
{
for(x=0; x<160; x++)
*d++ = *s++;
d+= 160;
}

The fix for that was to change it into something like this (this also fixes TV Out) :
Code: [Select]
uint32_t *s = (uint32_t*)Source_screen->pixels;
uint32_t *d = (uint32_t*)Destination_Screen->pixels;
for(uint8_t y2 = 0; y2 < 240; y2++, s += 160, d += 320)
memmove(d, s, 1280); // double-line fix by pingflood, 2018

So if you use the latest service pack, then you should not have the flashing issue for emulators/games.
But if you don't apply the service pack, you will get flashing issues.
It's the reason why i did not bundle the SP with PowerManga and Hex-A-Hop because it doesn't seem like this is properly fixed on new units but i might be wrong.

So make sure to update it. Thank you

I cannot find any information on how to apply the service pack, do I just overwrite the 3 folders using file commander to transfer from external SD to Internal?

Thanks for you help!

Well I tried copying the new stuff over and have some positive results but still having issues with some, NeoGeo, PSX, and Gameboy Advanced are all fixed, FBA GW still has issues, a320 works, SNES still has issues if I switch to fullscreen fast or smooth, I have to use original (This is a big bummer) SORR and some other games still have issues.

I installed this firmware last night:

Revision 2.1 (New units, came with a 16Gb sd card) :
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1B18Z7in5zhOzNGbsX1sN8plUgYZXjNlL

The result was really good, but I noticed that there is some issue like flashes in some emulators: ARCADE EMU, FBA, PSX... I didn't try all of emulators of the console. The other issue that I saw was that is not possible to mount SD card by USB. I think that firmware doesn't allow it.

Anyway, thanks for all!

You forgot to update to the lastest service pack as well. The SP contain the fixes for the new units.

Yes, you'r right, sorry. I'd forgotten to install the SP. However, after install 1.4 SP I noticed that FBA and FCEUX still flashing. Moreover, USB mount doesn't work but I don't know if it's normal.
Is possible to fix it?
Thanks a lot!
