Title: Mame4All for RS97 RetroFW and RS07
Post by: bopbopbop on February 21, 2019, 05:06:18 pm
Here's the latest (and probably final) release I'm making of Mame4all for RS07 and retrofw RS97 - this is just to clean up a few things before Slaanesh releases his (hopefully) much better version.

Latest changes: profiled binaries and romdir fixes

-Supports mame romset 0.37b5
-RS07 supports both pads
-use L+R+Start to exit a game

Download it here:

https://gitlab.com/bopbopbopbop/mame4all-rs97/tags/0.5

/////old

I've ported Mame4All across to the RS07, and also to the new RetroFW firmware on the RS97.

You can download them both here:

https://github.com/bopbopbopbop/mame4all-rs97/releases/tag/v0.4

For the RS97, install the IPK.

For the RS07,extract the folders in to your emu folder, and run the dge file.

Notes for the RS07:

The folder structure should be mame4all --->skins. This should happen automatically when extracted.

Skins should contain all of the bitmap files, and mame4all should have all of the other files. Some people are reporting that you need to run it once in commander first before making a shortcut so if it doesn't work for you at first, try that.

How to create a menu entry for mame4all:

In GMenuNX, go to the emulators section. Press select, and go to the mame4all.dge file. Select it. You should now have a link in emulators for the mame4all file.

this version of mame4all is the best one yet. with the advances made rtype leo is nearly full speed at 630mhz. I can't go any higher than that as i lose sound sync at 642. In the hunt is also much more playable than ever before but sound still suffers to a degree. TMNT turtles in time is completely fluid and amazing. If anyone can recommend any other arcade games worth playing that run well on the rs97, please let me know.

Your port work great and fast in rs-07, but I have some problems...

Is not possible scaling to full screen and some games have crashes to gmenu2x, like sunset riders and others.

Anyway thank you for your great port!!!

Some questions...

It is possible put game previews?
Its working external controllers?

Regards.

Another release for RS07 - External pads are working for the RS07.

I won't be doing image previews in the menu, sorry - but if someone wants to, feel free to fork or submit a patch.

Would it be possible to implement page down and up in the games list, please? L & R would be good candidates in my opinion. In this way we could put hundreds of roms on the SD card and still find quickly the game we want to play. Thanks

It took me a while to figure this out too.  Left and Right on the keypad are the same thing as page up and page down.  Up and Down on the keypad makes the game list scroll by one game at a time.

I've just released version 0.4 for both RS97 retrofw, and RS07 with useless firmware. Changes are pageskipping with L and R, and the aspect mode Scale Aspect will now scale down games with resolutions larger then the screen.

Diaclone - as Jason pointed out you can skip a single page of roms with left and right. I've also now implemented skipping four pages of roms with L or R.

Eltehero - Not directly, but yes. This is a fork of Bob Fossil's RS97 for earlier firmwares, pre-IPU. The port part is really more for the RS07 version.

Is this to suggest that eventual ipu optimizations could be made for improved performance? I thought they already had been as this is faster than the version i run on useless firmware.

The IPU implementation in Tony's kernel is not flexible enough to work for the Arcade Mini.
I had plans to profile his MAME4ALL port though to improve the speed (as well as statically link it) but i prefer to let him fix the remaining issues before doing that. Then i will provide MAME4ALL as part for my CFW.

Also, his kernel does not support TV Out and a lot of people are using it for the Arcade Mini.

Can you add support for snaps in the menu?

EDIT: Scaling is not working in RS-07, I tried scale fast, full screen or aspect ratio and always is rendered at native resolution on the center of the screen.

@naxeras Hi Naxeras - You had me worried there! Scaling is working, I just re-tested it! For games bigger then the screen, it's only on the "scale aspect" setting. 1941 should give you a clear demonstration. The reason for this is it's currently very cpu intensive. Theoretically, the IPU could handle all this in the future, but it needs to be supported in the kernel first.

Also, I won't be supporting snaps, but if someone else wants to they can patch or fork on github, I'll have a look at the code.

@HercTNT The RS97 version writes to the IPU, which resizes the image from 320x240 to 320x480, but the image needs to be resized to 320x240 first before this happens, which uses processing time. So there's that, which may or may not ever be supported. There's also triple buffering and profiling, as gameblabla mentioned, as slight potential speed boosts. So the RS07 version will get quite a bit better with IPU, the RS97 version may or may not get slightly better with triple buffering and direct resolutions to IPU.

@gameblabla thanks for offering to profile!  ;)

@naxeras I see what you mean re: RS07 resizing - it's not upscaling anything currently, only downscaling. I've likely disabled a command line switch internally, it should be simple fix. I will post something soon, probably won't be today.

@naxeras I've uploaded a new version for the RS07 which fixes the scaling options. The rom directory issue is still there, I'll be looking in to that later.

It's 0.4.1, same download page:

Let me know if you have any other issues- especially crashing games, etc.

Fullscreen scaling is not working.

Anyway thank you, its better than previous now.

Hi @naxeras ! Ace! Good to hear we're getting there!

so the first three video scaling options when you start a game are:

Unscaled - should be normal res, even if it doesnt fit
Scale aspect - downscale - will downscale anything larger then the screen and keep aspect, otherwise leaves alone
Scale aspect - upscale - will upscale anything smaller then the screen, keeping the aspect

Are all three of these working for you?
If not, which ones, and how? Can you give me some examples of games?

Thank you for addressing those issues.

About scaling, I can see the same issues that naxeras reported.
"Unscaled" and "Scale aspect - downscale" work perfectly fine.

"Scale aspect - upscale" only works properly with some games, for example Shinobi.
With others, like Bubble Bobble, Rygar and Double Dragon, the screen gets scaled only vertically, the horizontal resolution remains unchanged. Therefore the games shows wrong proportions, the characters are too tall and thin.

Another potential scaling issue is with NeoGeo games, specifically Viewpoint. The screen is upscaled with the right proportions, but it shows some resizing artifacts on straight lines. I'd imagine this to be due to the scaling algorithm that has to be fast, but I thought it was worth to be mentioned.

Another issue: Kung Fu Master has sound effects, but no music.

Thank you for your work on this port.

I've updated the RS07 build with better scaling - upscaling and downscaling now both work. Also, I think I've now completely fixed the directory issue, please let me know if there are any issues.

The build is 0.4.4, and it is available from the link in the first post.

There are still some issues with upscaling - occasionally you will get weird pixels to the right of the image. I may or may not have a fix for this soon!

Thank you for this new release.
Bubble Bobble now works great. Rygar works very well too, it just shows the weird pixels that you mentioned.
The only actual issue I saw is with Double Dragon and Double Dragon 2. The former is missing some columns of pixels on the left border, like the display window is not large enough and the left portion of the image is cropped.
Double Dragon 2 has a similar issue, the difference is that some of pixels of the left border gets drawn on the right just after a large column of black pixels.

Hi @neo82! Are you using retrofw and IPKs? It sounds like it. You can unzip an ipk with 7zip, so if you wanted to go back to 4 you could just copy over the Mame4all folder in emu.

Immediate crashes are normally because it cant find the graphics files for the menu and the startup screen - check the two bitmap images are there. Unfortunately I don't have an ldk so I cant test the issue.

If anyone else has an issue with installing/running 0.5, let me know, and I can put out an ipk of 0.4 you can install over 0.5, if that makes sense.

I?m getting great video performance in the old arcade games that I mainly play but some games are exhibiting popping audio (for example Donkey Kong and Joust). I remember this was an issue back in the first days of the custom firmware but was fixed in the Useless port. Anyone have ideas on what regressed?

Hi @kapster This port is based on bob fossil/dinosaw_act's excellent work (https://github.com/thefossilrecord/mame4all-rs97/commits/master) - I've had a look through his initial patches and I can't see anything relating to sound code.

I'm pretty certain that I subsequently haven't touched that area of the code, so I can't see why it would have changed?

It likely is a regression of some kind I've introduced - let's see what happens with other versions of mame over the next few months and if nothing appears, maybe I'll pick it up again.  :)

@gameblabla Great to see you could potentially be working on mame4all. Ive finally got a working romset but performance has been really disappointing on simple games i thought would be ok. my 2 favourite games Double Dragon and Ninja Spirit stutter all over the place. I thought it would run a lot better. I used to play these games fine on a really old JXD 7100b

Wiggle the DPad left and right a few times, game will start.
To exit game hold Left + Right Shoulder buttons plus Start Button, to exit Mame4All (while in game list selection screen) hold Left + Right Shoulder buttons

Hello bopbopbop,

First thanx for your great work!  :)

I've tested on a gameta 2 plus the adaptation found here:

https://github.com/bopbopbopbop/mame4all-rs97/releases/tag/v0.4

...but it still crashes after a while...

do you think you'll give a more try to release a working gameta version? (plz!!  :'( )
