Title: LDK retroFW SNES performance
Post by: jmorneno114 on May 24, 2019, 07:18:30 am
I am getting pretty bad performance on games like super metroid and xmen, any way to improve performance? is stock better? I heard there are other FW we can put too?

I am on a RS-07 with Useless Firmware. SNES performance overall is pretty poor considering nearly every other system is full speed or very close. I think this is an Emulation issue rather than a firmware. Its probably not been touched in a long time!

I have seen others suggest retrofw is slower than useless. I don't have that issue myself and as you just posted i truly think for some it's just a setting issue. Auto framerate skip as you mentioned is a must.

Blah. I confirmed this.

That frikin frameskip setting will make a huge difference on RetroFW's PocketSNES

It shuld be set on "auto" by default, but the default settings on RetroFW is 0.

Setting the frameskip to 0 will even make the Useless Firmware PocketSNES runs awfully as well.

Oh well, with games like ROTT, Jazz and Falling Down, I cannot move on from Useless yet.

agreed, settings can be confusing at times. i find with frameskip set to auto that retrofw is a hare faster than useless. however i can't blame you for not wanting to leave openjazz behind. retrofw needs it bad.

Well, they have been on fire releasing quite a few ports to RetroFW, like Super Mario War, so fingers crossed :)

If you set frameskipping at ?auto? it will skip frames.
I.e.you are not playing the game it was meant to be played.

If you set it to 0 then the games will run very slow with significant frame drops. You're not playing the game it was meant to be played as well. Yes, it is a workaround, not a real solution. But it doesn't feel like it's skipping any frames.

This device is (relatively) cheap. It got outdated and underpowered processor. And all the goodies are provided for free. As long as I can enjoy the games and didn't feel any framedrops/skips, good enough for me.

Amen. I feel as if there are some that expect to much from these machines. the fact that they are able to do what they do now thanks to the hard work of the community is amazing. Expecially, as you pointed out, how cheap they are.  I'm waiting for gameblabla to make good on porting a ps2 emulator over for those who keep asking ;)

I overclock to 702 (press select when on SNES icon then edit and set clock speed) and i've not set frameskip (might try this later), so far the few games i've tested have work ok (Final Fight 2, Captain Commander, Undercover Cop, Mario Kart).

I never been a fan of overclocking in any form. They only gain marginal performance on softwares, while decreasing the processor's life or drains your battery faster. In desktop/laptops, it can produce very significant heat aswell, which might damage the whole mainboard. My previous laptop and phone got damaged from overclocking so those are lessons learned in hard way.

Nowadays I set my laptop (primary computer) processor to 99% and disable the so called "turbo" thingy.

LDK might not that powerful to produce significant heat that could damage nearby components, but most likely it will drain the battery faster.

I've not noticed much difference in battery life when setting clock speed at 702, I mean i get better battery life playing PocketSNES at 702 then i do running UAE4ALL at default 600, so battery life depends on not just clock speed but also how well the Emulator can handle power saving and/or optimization of code for device, also all emulators are default clocked at 600 which is still over the 528 factory default for said processor, And this is just a ?40-?60 pound handheld toy which will be superseded by something better soon, I can relate to not overclocking a ?300+ computer/laptop, but at the end of the day it's down to the user to do what they want ;)

P.S. (Mods) For some reason the English Pound sign has changed to a Question mark, While editing it is a pound sign but as soon as i post/save if changes to a question mark?

Also the Frameskip to Auto/0/1... will not help.
With FS to 1 it has 20FPS, but not funny to play.
At the moment i see now way to play SNES on it. Overlocking no.. No chance..
Well.
All the others GBA, NeoGeo and FBA, Amiga working great so far.

It seems most of these Ingenic Devices struggle with SNES performance. Its strange because ive had older lower specced handhelds run games much better like the GP32 and 2x. There probably was a more active coding community back then.

My last ditch effort was back to useless firmare

After my finding about setting frameskip to auto it does feel better on RetroFW

But I keep on using Useless since there're still some games that I really like on it which are not available on RetroFW

Now some of those games are ported to RetroFW, yesterday I give it another try, and yeah I feel huge difference of FPS between Useless and RetroFW, that is becoming very apparent after awhile playing SNES on Useless.
