Is the RS-97 still a good purchase?
« on: December 29, 2018, 06:54:50 pm »
My GPD XD is on the fritz, and I'm just wanting to buy a cheap unit to throw in a bag with me when I go out. I've seen a lot of talk about these RS-97 units, and I was about to buy one on fasttech, but then I was reading the custom firmware guide here:

https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/uselessrs97-internal-firmware-for-revision-2-1/

and I noticed the author said this:
Quote
New units are now defective.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, I NO LONGER CAN RECOMMEND BUYING THE RS-97.

 ??? ??? ???

Can anyone confirm? What's defective about them? Is there any way to guarantee I get a non-defective unit?

Thanks for any help!
PGS: Let the trainwreck continue to unfold.

If it was me I would either of the following:

A) Buy a used unit pre configured or with a low model number... (ask if the internal SD card has ever been changed and is 4GB)
B) Wait for the RS-97 Pro due in the new year sometime, however you may be waiting for the CFW to be ready depending on the hardware specs

I have 2 units, both 2.0 (old version) If you are in the UK I am happy to sell or trade one

Hope this helps :)

Newer units had USB transfer disabled, which might be what they were talking about, but there is a custom kernel available for all currently known new units that enables USB, and adds features such as brightness control working anywhere and the ability to shutdown the device from anywhere by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. This makes new units as good as or better than old units, with the exception that new units can?t use reGBA, the better of the two GBA emulators for the RS97.

I?ve heard of a couple instances of the screen being too bright or some units not supporting overclocking as well, but it sounds like most people are happy with their units. Plus you could always get a refund if you get a bad unit. I?d say either go for it now or wait for the plus. (The pro has the same CPU, so don?t expect better performance or anything.)
