Title: Game G100 / Cheap GBA SP clone issue
Post by: kryswade on May 04, 2019, 10:06:48 am
So, recently I bought this "nice" cheap console.
It's actually nice for the price, it's the same hardware/software as the rs90 but with the gba sp form factor.

The issue is the first time i connected the thing to my pc it corrupted the internal storage and all my internal roms disappeared, I recovered them with CHKDSK  but they are not usable on this state.

Can someone with the same console or a similar one (they were common some years ago) give me a backup of the internal storage so I can restore my console?

I leave you link of the freaking thing and some pictures with the folder structure.

Looks awesome, hope you get it fixed.

How many buttons does that thing have? Also, does it natively support anything other then GBA?

Interesting device! Do you know if the internals are also identical to the RS-90 (CPU & RAM?) If so, perhaps opendingux for the RS-90 might also work on this device....

I didn't open the console yet, but, from the performance of the games, I think that yes, it shares the sames specs. The cpu is the same, I checked it. The ram...i don't know. Even if it is we need a driver for the lcd, among the other things, and that's not an easy works. pcercuei made an incredibie effort.

Ai.. I forgot about the LCD driver. Yes, it is incredible the amount of work pcercuei has put into his opendingux release. But I like to inspect how some of these devices share component and software. So for now I group the RS-90, RS-12 and Game G100 together. And it would be cool to know if, for instance (and just speculation) the LCD in the Game G100 is the same as the RS-12....

also the pmp iv, the pmp v and the dvtech pocket share at least some hardware. The pmp v has even the same lcd. Opendingux in the game g100 would be a nice addiction, I really like the gba sp form factor

From what I know all the "PMP" share the same hardware. (Ingenic Devices Guide (https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/ingenic-devices-guide/msg185782/#msg185782))
But are you sure about this one? (Game G100) Could you take some internal photos? It has on the shell "Bina Vadaat" but seems very similar to the GB Station Light, the shell seems the same at least.

I'm sure. The shell is, in reality, very different. It's very similar to the gba spa one, obviously much cheaper. Also the gb station light is a fc on a chip, only nes games. This is an emulation machine, albeit a cheap one. I'll post some internal pictures asap.

here they are. As you can see is a JZ4725B , not sure about the amount of ram tough. It also has a "sd card cartridge" similar to the k1 gba or, more recently, to the rs97 one.

Interesting. In the past there were some other GBA like shell or GBA SP like shell clone with ingenic inside but unfortunately they are quite obscure.
I saw that you found another one (https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/dvtech-pocket-ingenic-jz4740-gba-clone/) in the past.
I found some other examples: 1 (https://obscurehandhelds.com/2010/08/the-nintendo-game-boy-advance-clone/).
There is also the GAMEBOX ADVANCE (not the exeq one) that seems to have a JZ4755. The one that you have seems and underpowered version of that old GAMEBOX ADVANCE.

EDIT: I created now a thread to collect informations on this kind of devices: Nintendo GBA & GPA SP Clones (SHELL) with Ingenic inside (https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/gba-gpa-sp-clones-with-ingenic-inside/)

Is it really that bad?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri7eSf4WEsE

Anyway, I'm guessing you will have to ask pcercuei (https://boards.dingoonity.org/profile/Ayla/) whether he'd be willing to add support for the device and send the handheld to him.

Does it support GB/GBC? Also, the video mentions issues with button mappings (unable to shoot in Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, for example), and bad tf card support, is that correct?

not correct at all. This guy, wicked gamer / collector is a nice guy but not a too techy one.
Sd cards works fine. Maybe his sd cards where not formatted in fat32. Mine works fine. It supports gb/gbc with goomba, another layer of emulation so.

I would mainly use it for gb/gbc and gba but goomba colour you cant stretch the screen. I don't think it will be long until these sp clones come with better emus and if this eventual gets supported with Opendingux it will become interesting.

it's technically possible with this thing. Plus, it's cheap. CPS1 is laggy but these thing it's mainly built for gba games. Not a must buy but a nice item for the price

It's practically worthless without custom fw then - was hoping for a RetroMini with full GB/GBC support and a larger screen that would allow SNES games to run without scaling, but guess not.

The screen really does seem to be larger than RetroMini, can you confirm whether it has higher resolution than 240*160? If it can play NES/SNES without that horrible scaling, it might be worth considering.

You could ask pcercuei (https://boards.dingoonity.org/profile/Ayla/), but be ready to ship the device to him, I doubt this would be doable without him actually having the device on hand.

Is the screen larger than on the RetroMini? Can it run SNES games without scaling?

there is a backup of my internal storage : https://mega.nz/#!RQlHlC4J!MmAWXbXLDbibaLDwFvkbcBgBZ6EHjxLgNT-_cS1aTTY

for adding games on external sd , format it to fat32 , create a ''game'' directory , and put rom on it

I'm not familiar with the device, but if it comes with TV-out it's likely to be NES on a chip.

Why would that be? Are you thinking that because of the RS90, or is there some other reason? Most jz47 devices have tv out - Dingoo, RS97, RS07, etc. Or is there a limitation to the JZ4725 chip?

From what I can tell, the GB Station is the JZ4725, and the GB Station Light is the NOAC. Avoid the GB Station Light!

Got mine today and i must say i am quite impressed with it considering the price. It all works as it should, emulation of gba is ok but there is ghosting in fast games (same as retro mini with default firmware) and the Nes games i have tested work well but with some slight screen tearing . Also i have been able to edit the onboard storage for my games, which is a good feature (you need to edit the gamelist.txt in the System folder to get them to show and be able to launch them). Buttons are clicky but i like that and the screen is good with a decent size (eyes are not as good as they used to be), also another plus is save states. With a bit of messing around i think it is a fair system for occasional gameplay.

Can someone confirm whether the device has the same screen resolution of 240x160 pixels just like the RetroMini?

Does it boot to USB mode if you press one of the keys (A or B) like the RetroMini?

Yes, turn off device and connect via usb then just turn on and it will connect and mount the main storage and the sd card.
Also using select button while powering on it is recognised the same as the retro mini (odbootd) using driver libwdi 6.1.7600.16385

Got mine today, thanks for mentioning it in the first place.

It's an excellent form factor, and the gba and nes emulation is good although the screen refresh is a little slow. Main issue I'm finding (although I've only played with it for ten minutes) is that the buttons and dpad don't raise much out the body. On top of this, the plastic around the buttons is recessed, so it's difficult to press a and b at the same time, for instance. I would much prefer it with different, more raised buttons, but it's still got a lovely form factor and seems to play snes, gba, nes, mgeadrive and cps1 out of the box.

Interesting, but not a problem unless you lose the cartridge somehow, I'd assume.

Yes, I've just retested and it looks like I got that wrong. It was just after I rebuilt it and I must have mis-set the video lead, then jogged it as I plugged in the cartridge or something? Sorry, thanks for correcting.

I also just retried it with the RS97 cartridge, and that seems to work and load the SD card. Also, you can insert, remove and swap cartiridges while the machine is on - it seems to mount them when you go in to the SD card menu. I havent tried it while in a game, however - I presume its still loading the rom from disk.

g100 is not the first SP clone device with JZ4725B

there was a A025

https://blog.naver.com/drangra/221107445013
sorry it's written in Korean
2016 version with JZ4725B with no SD card slot (if you zoom the photo, clearly can see it's JZ4725B)

https://gbatemp.net/threads/gba-clone-help-usb-pinout.368637/
2013 version

btw why some of GBA files like GTA wont work on this device?

Nice find!

Not sure about the compatibility issue - I'd imagine it's just because it's not a very good emulator!

It also can't handle PocketNES, and either crashes out of or has serious errors on quite a few NES roms directly. On either castlevania 1 or 3 for example you appear to be invincible, and kid dracula crashes out.

Also A and B on the nes are swapped around, which threw me for a bit. And finally, it has some weird screen refresh for the nes where I think it might be doing every other frame, as when you get hit and your sprite would normally flash, you turn invisible.

Despite this, it is a really nice device!

In theory it is hackable, but I can't figure out how to make the LCD work, so unless I get help with that it won't happen.

There seems to be some progress in that area further down the topic.

PSA: THIS DEVICE DOES NOT CURRENTLY RUN FREE SOFTWARE
IT MAY NEVER
DON'T BUY IT YET

I pulled the lcd out and managed to drive it with cut-and-paste arduino code (MIT), see thread here: https://boards.dingoonity.org/other-game-systems/rs90-in-a-gba-sp-shell/ .

The device is currently waiting on somebody with kernel skills to make the required modifications to the RS90 kernel. I set up a build machine VM to play with, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do much productive with it. I got some new parts in the mail yesterday and got distracted by a hardware modding project, since that's a little more in my wheelhouse. Details on that soon.

I plan to check back in on the G100 in a few weeks. If there's no new developments by then I'll try to build some ham-fisted kernels of my own. I am willing to run breadboard experiments at any time, as I've kept my setup together.

Tempting, but I'm not accepting donations myself at this time. Certainly not for a software deliverable. I've revised the original post. Getting the device into the right hands helps, but those people also have to be interested and not busy with other stuff...

It has not been very long since pcerceui confirmed that the device was hackable, and there's some other stuff going on with jz4770.

If you're not intending to build kernels, I'd check back in 4-8 weeks.

If anyone is interested, I saw this person on YouTube who installed opendingux on the game g100 console, but I don't know how he would have done it.  Maybe they can consult him and he can solve it and get the CFW vendor for the G100.

Usually.  How do Gameboy advance games work on the G100?  I am referring to 3D games, itself "crash nitro kart", since I am very interested in the console for the price and how similar it is to the gameboy advance sp. Do you recommend it? Since I am only looking for an economical console that works well  Gameboy games, Gameboy color and Gameboy advance (including 3D games of the latter).  Do Gameboy advance (3D) games run with a lot of lag on the game G100?

Yes, more demanding GBA games are not great, don't expect Doom or Crash Nitro to run at enjoyable speeds. Having custom firmware available would help, but not much, JZ4725B powered devices have low performance.

I wouldn't recommend the G100, unless you can get it for very cheap (got mine for $15 total, as I've received a partial refund for the battery, which holds the charge for about 15 minutes), you only want to play some less demanding GBA games (GB and GBC are bad on the original firmware, as you have to use Goomba to convert the roms), and you really like the shell.

With custom firmware, the device would run a lot of gen4 console games relatively fine, just like the RetroMini, and could be recommended to people on very tight budgets who also want the GBA SP shell. And even that's questionable, because for just a few dollars more, you can get the PowKiddy V90, which also has a GBA SP format shell, and runs everything up to PS1 without problems.

Maybe try asking Jutleys (https://boards.dingoonity.org/ingenic-jz4760-devices/unofficial-opendingux-port-rg99/), seems like he somehow made OpenDingux happen on the RG99, so he could possibly do the same on the G100?

That was steward-fu.

Something i would add for the G100, the screen is pretty bad (lots of tearing) and the buttons aren't great either, it's not as good as what the GBA SP used to be.

He posted the topic (where the devs are credited) and the flash guide, so I'd assume he is involved in some manner (and maybe knows how to help, or where to direct requests).

Any $25 device is unavoidably going to be not great in one way or another, but still can be sufficient for some people (not everybody cares about tearing or button quality), especially with proper software.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing cfw running on the G100 - with a new $5 battery, it would be a $20 handheld I could drag around without care (the shell design allowing me to just pop it into my pocket without any pouches or cases), and play my few select GB/GBC/GBA/SNES games with next to no issue.

The most annoying thing apart the hardness of buttons is the fact that L/R buttons cant work combined with others buttons. Metro Zero is impossible to finish because you cant fire missiles  :( ...

Oh sorry . I meant Metroid Zero Mission. On GBA of course. I typed too fast, without verification  :'(

When I push R for the missiles and then B to fire, i just switch to the normal gun and shoot.
Weird enough, when I push [ R + L + B ] i successfully shoot a missile ... but only diagonally.

Consult, how long does the battery last for the normal console?  because I bought one on aliexpress in mid-August and it arrived 3 days ago and well, I want to know how long the charge lasts for you.  to know if it is normal or not.  The other when I charge it (a red led turns on) and when it finishes the led turns off.  Are you also charged like this or when it is 100% charged does the green LED turn on?
