Yes it's all in the instructions where you downloaded

#12 if you are using a bigger card than 4gb you will need to extend the roms partition in any partition tool manager.
#13 boot done and enjoy :)

what partition tool do you use?

Is it possible to add a program on the actual RS-97 in the future to extend the partition at all?

Any free partition wizard does the job fine i can link the tool in the instructions.

When I burn the image of the 1.7 firmware onto my sd card, it won't boot into custom firmware only the internal sd. What am I doing wrong? tried it from fresh 3 times now.

V1.7 is for internal only that's why.
