working workaround (it seems) for those driver chrashes
« on: November 13, 2016, 03:42:15 pm »
so with a tip from @scatsy I finally figured what is causing some games to crash on my WIN while others run perfectly: they use dx10 or 11.

Quake 4 (opengl), aquanox 2 (dx 8.1), blazblue (9.0), bastion (9.0), burnout paradise (9.0), recettear (8.1) and dirt 3 in dx9 mode all work perfectly well.

Killer is dead (dx10 or 11 according to steam), skyrim (uses some dx10 features), and dirt 3 in dx11 mode all crash within 3 to 20 minutes (3 for dirt 3, 5 for skyrim, ~ 30 for killer is dead).

Apparently my win has display driver crashes when playing games that use dx10 or 11. But anything old enough to use dx9 or below, or that uses opengl, or that has a way to force it to use dx9 (dirt 3) seems to run perfectly fine. Dolphin too, that uses dx12.

For me personally, I am going to test dmc 4 (let's you use 9 OR 10) sometime soon, if that is fine I won't try to "fix" it, far too afraid of breaking something. Games that are new and AAA enough to ONLY work in dx10 are probably better played on my game desktop anyway.

But it has been reported that the issue was fixable by installing directx 11 again via directx.com.es ,  a website that looks kind of shady to me and @skelton  but after installing directx via there @scatsy  had no more crashes in all their games. Can't hurt to try, if you absolutely want to play skyrim, killer is dead, and other really modern game on the win and you have driver crashes.

If possible, first try to force your game to use directx9 and see if that doesn't magically make them go away.

I tried Overwatch (Which should be DirectX 10.1) and I didn't have any issues

I didn't have any crashes with Need for Speed (2015), which I believe is DX11, but I didn't play long.

dirt 3 crashed when I started a race. The game also does some weird stuff (fan stops for 2 seconds, controller disconnects at the same time)

I played it for an hour today with no issues (800x600 lowest still looks great) but only after I went to xml config file in dirt 3 folder in my games folder in my documents folder and set force directx9 to 1 (or true) as per here http://dirt3directx.blogspot.nl/2011/05/changing-direct-x-in-dirt-3.html

Try that! its a great game ;-)

Oh I had the game already. And Dirt Rally. But I'm not interested in playing in the GPDW.

Next I'm going to try DOA5, Dirt Rally, The Division

No crashes while playing (HAHA "playing") The Division. Getting 10-15 FPS

Dirt Rally was smooth in low settings 720p
