Upgrade to the GPD WIN?
« on: May 15, 2017, 03:29:12 pm »
Hey guys! I've had an Nvidia Shield for a while and while its definitely the best android portable ever made, PS4 remote play no longer works on the device so I was looking into the GPD WIN because it can emulate gamecube and even play  pc games not the newer ones but still. Now I have an alienware alpha 2015 that i use for pc gaming and love it (got it for $230 heck of bargain on CL) now im wondering is it cool to sell my shield to get the GPD WIN or is it overkill since i already have a gaming desktop? obviously the GPD Win is portable so big difference but what do you guys think? that video of a guy playing Halo on it got me so hyped lol I would mostly emulate on this device and play maybe 5 pc games (NFS Underground 2, Halo 1, Halo 2, Resident Evil HD Remaster, and maybe Resident Evil 4)

With Android you probably can only play emulators.

But with Win you can go play stuffs via Steam streaming.

I did it with old netbook and it ran very smooth.

But I only use my GPD win for older games and emulators. Even for the emulators alone there're literally unlimited possibilities of games you can play on it when comparing with Android.

So yeah, go for it.

Do it  ;)

The GPD Win is awesome for older AAA games, emulation (including GameCube and some PS2 games) and indies.

My Shield portable now sits as a TV console for my wife to watch crunchyroll on, lol. I use my my GPD Win for portable gaming now. It runs Halo 1 & 2 fine.

Steam streaming also works fine on it.

It's not, I personally have the Razer Edge pro as my main computer (with docking station and gamepad dock) but the gpd Win is to use everywhere you want to travel or when you don't want to open a full set up (with gamepad and everything) to play.

The GPD win is just like a Psp or a Nintendo Ds, an everyday handheld console, you press one button to pause your game and open it later to continue your game.

I converted my GPD Win with FS-UAE to an Amiga 4000 with Classic WorkBench V 3.1. That's also something that works very good on the GPD Win.  ;)

With the GPD XD you can get a few console/PC titles thats been ported to Android.
such as Bully, GTA 3/Vice City/San Andreas, Star Wars Knights of the old Republic (not sure if it has controller support), Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath,..
Even Half Life 2 and Portal but that requires root and a OpenGLES hack and runs with a few glitches.
But I'm mainly pissed at Nvidia for making all the good titles likes Half Life 2, Portal, Doom 3 BFG, Tomb Raider 2013/Legend/Anniversary, Resident Evil 5, Trine 1+2 Shield exclusive..

But after all.. if you're more into AAA PC titles then I'd recommend the GPD Win, it can even run graphic stunning titles such as Gears of War and Rage like a charm.

That's because it was made for their Tegra chips. Optimizing the games for only one (their own) hardware platform makes it possible to get ports with a decent performance.

Not true at all. They invested money to have those ports made, thats why they are exclusives.
There are programs you can use to trick the game to think you are running a tegra and it will run just fine. But the controls wont be right generally.

The only reason I held onto my Shield Portable is my wife is using it. I was planning on selling it. If yours works, I'd sell it before parts start failing (the button board went on mine and I had to replace it). I don't see a niche Android device being much of a collector's item, could be wrong though.

I was considering this too, because friends did tell me that once the hardware battery or otherwise stops working its done. It would be different if this was a brand new sealed one but its not. Selling is probably the best bet right now

Shield battery is actually a pretty easy replacement. It's just 3 18650 batteries which are very commonly found.

Hehe yeah i get you. I might actually just keep the shield bc its so one of a kind, and get a GPD XD for now bc i like the placement of the R3/L3 better and i can stream pc games from my computer via moonlight. The thing is whilst the WIN looks INCREDIBLE, windows emulators tend to frustrate me lmao android ones are so simple in comparison and ill probably mostly play ps1 and n64 era games

Its a trade off tho, bc windows emulators are WAY BETTER lol just need more tuning and take more time at least once they are setup launchbox makes it possible to have roms in one place and other frontends, but i think the mostly the l3/r3 placement and what kind of games ill be playing that make me think i will get the GPD XD

Also can anyone tell me if the GPD Win is very heavy? like shield portable heavy? lol or is it more along the lines of 3DS XL weight
