SD Card Issues- Any fixes discovered so far?
« on: March 27, 2017, 11:09:50 pm »
Right so I apologise, firstly, that I am starting a bunch of threads-- rest assured that I've done my research here and on reddit/ youtube before posting.

I am having issues with my Strontium 128 gb card on the Win-- this card used to work flawlessly on the XD and I have tried formatting it and have made registry changes as indicated here (https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/5xnp8r/heres_a_permanent_solution_to_avoid_sd_card/)
to no avail. After a few minutes of any I/O the card seems to become non-responsive and needless to say, I'm gutted :(

I had previously made some minor tweaks to the BIOS which I have since reset and rebooted a few times and the issue persists.

I should clarify that the card is detected just fine and I'm able to do small I/O but with any larger downloads or in trying to install a game to the card, it just bails.

I tried the same process on the same card from my PC and it works.

Does anyone have any suggestions? PLEASE?

I've waited too long and spent too much money (base price +shipping +customs duty) to have any inclination to spend more to send this back and have to wait endlessly.

Any help will be appreciated. GREATLY appreciated

Is it formatted NTFS or exFAT?

Is it formatted NTFS or exFAT?

exFAT, as I was using this on Android prior to the Win. Since my last post, though, I've tried to pop in a 64 gig Samsung card that I had from some years back and 2 hours in at this stage, a 7 gig file is being downloaded to it just fine. This same file was being aborted on the 128 gig card after a few minutes so fingers crossed that it goes through to the end now.

People have reported issues using exFAT on the Win. Give NTFS a try too.
For reference, I'm using NTFS.

I use exfat and never had issues. I suggest to try a different card. If the behaviour is the same perhaps sd card reader is defective or maybe your GPD doesn't like your card.

Try also with GPDKeepAlive software, it may help.

Cheers for the link-- to update from my previous post, the download DID complete on the 64 gig so it couldn't have been a HW issue. I have now changed the driver for the SD controller using the one that was made available on another thread and tried a new download on my 128 gig.

As I type, it has been accepting data for the last 30 minutes which is longer than the 8-9 minute mark where I used to get  a crash so I think the driver might have done the trick!

Which driver are you referring to exactly?
Thanks :)

Was originally on a Dingoonity thread but I followed the Reddit page here- https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/5lhv9a/for_those_having_sd_card_reader_issues_try_this/

I can further confirm that subsequent to my last post, I am now also able to install PES 2017 onto the card which was previously not possible. I'm still new to this device but I'd certainly recommend this fix to anyone.

The download comes with a word document which is unfortunately not in English but google translate does enough to help figure out the basic instructions.

Cheers

I just posted what worked for me in the reddit. I haven't had any issues yet. I posted the instructions.

For anyone having SD Card issues:
1) Right click the windows icon on the bottom right
2) Go to Device Manager
3) Click the drop down to SD Host Adapters
4) Right click the third "Intel SD Host Controller"
5) Tap Update Driver Software
6) Tap Browse my computer for driver software
7) Tap Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
8) Select SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller
9) It'll install the software
10) See if it helped? Lol

I think that "fix" has been around for some time now
It didn't work for me so I've ditched the 128 gb card and am now using a 64 SD + 64 Sandisk UltraFit combo which suits my use.
At any rate, glad you got your card working :)

Ah didn't know that. I knew the one that uses those downloaded drivers worked, but I switched to the generic ones.
