is it dangerous to charge in standby?
« on: November 08, 2016, 08:00:05 am »
So today I should probably really finally receive my GPD roulette, the suspense is killing me!

But I wonder about one thing: the XD was killed if you turned it on/off while charging.

Now @LordDavon just posted this:

"So here is something strange that happened to my Win.  I want to preface this that I disabled hibernation, so the unit is only able to sleep or shut down.  I had it running for about an hour, but plugged it in to charge and left it alone.  I came back about 4 hours later, and the unit's light was rapidly flashing purple.  I unplugged it, and the unit was dead.  It wouldn't turn on, wake, etc.  It was just dead.  I plugged it back in.  It's LED would just flash blue for 1 second, go out for 3 seconds, and repeat.  I left it alone for 20 minutes, came back, and it finally turned on.  I think there may be some issues with sleep, at least with my device.  I am re-enabling hibernation."

We have also seen a few other people who say their win worked great shen first started up, but then they charged them and they were turned off and wouldn't go on anymore ie bricked.

we have also seen there are units in which the device turns itselff off from sleep mode.

so I wonder, does/can closing the lid of your win when you're done gaming and plugging it in the charger for a few hours somehow kill your unit? I am talking out-of-the-box configuration here, so closing the lid will put it into standby. If it does, then we have to remind people somewhere to disable sleep mode and make it so that the device will go into standy with just the screen turned off when you close the lid instead.

Does anyone know? If I receive a working win that can play intense 3d games for a few hours without crashing, I sure do not want to blow it up on the first day!

Does anyone know?

Or is everyone charging their wins in standby for wheeks already now?

I just don't want to blow it up by charging on teh first day, and I know the XD was peculiar in how it wanted to be charged, so...

hm I had a rapidly flashing purple light in sleep mode.
I thought it was some kind of EMMC activity because it had a pattern like an HDD activity LED would have.

But yea I noticed it got some problems with its sleep or hibernation mode while charging..
like the red light would turn off while its shut down but still charging..

All very odd.
I hope GPD fixes those issues with a firmware update.

yeah, but people with 8700 have been reporting it as well @RetroVortex  too I believe.

So I think the best thing to do is configure it in such a way that it goes into standby not sleep (I have never used windows 10 before, and always ubuntu on laptops, so to be honest I really don't know to do this and ti seems to be complicated for the WIN) when you close the lid right? Because naturaly, you are done playing, you close the lid, put it in charger.

I don't want to return to a dead wIN.

If you guys agree that is the best idea, then please explian a bit more clearly how to get your win such that it NEVER goes into sleep mode, not from inactivity, and also not from closing the lid or even pressing the power button. I know there is a guide on here somewhere but I have no idea where to even find these settings.

The alternative is to always turn it fully off before charging.

But you guys do agree that for now, closing the lid thereby putting it to sleep and then putting it on the charger is a bad idea, right?

does @kendyzhu777 know anything about this? When I get my win hopefully today, and I have played on it, can I just close the lid so it goes into sleep mode and put it on charger for few hours? Or can that make it so that my WIN never starts up anymore?

I've charged while hibernating, sleeping, and using the device. I've unplugged and plugged in in all those states. I wouldn't worry about it.

I've had mine on the charger, off the charger, lid open, lid closed. Default BIOS settings. All works well.

If I reboot while charging, it stops booting before Windows loads, and shows a battery charging screen. I know I can fix that in the BIOS, but I don't recall the steps.

All in all, it runs very well for what it is.
