GPD Win 2 battery problems
« on: December 15, 2018, 03:37:55 pm »
I backed the GPD Win 2 on Indiegogo and received it around May or June. I used it a lot in the beginning but in the past two months I hardly turned it on. Now I've started using it again I am getting terrible battery life, while gaming I barely manage an hour from 100 percent. I've tried disconnecting the battery, I've even reset Windows. I don't know what else to do. Do I need a new battery and where can I get one from?

Follow this to generate a battery report.
https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/generate-battery-report-windows-10

There are two important parts of the report.
This

And this

Now once you run the report what is your full charge capacity at the beginning of the chart and at the end and on the full charge capacity chart is the capacity degradation gradual or is there a sudden large drop?
If there is some massive drop then you might be able to get a replacement under warranty.
Send your battery report to [email protected] and make sure to describe your symptoms and ask for a replacement and see what they say.

Otherwise if you want a replacement immediately and live in the US I have them in stock.

Unfortunately I reset Windows so the battery report is only showing me from a few days ago. The full charge capacity is 13,310 mWh.

I live in the UK so I'm not sure where to purchase a replacement battery from. I've contacted GPD with my current battery report so I guess I'll just have to wait and see what they say.

These batteries don't fall out of calibration or anything like that, that's a faulty battery.
I've sent several people GPD's way with the same type of battery degradation who successfully got replacement batteries from them under warranty after submitting proof to them such as that battery report so hopefully they'll take care of you too.

Sorry to hear. Well, you have options for replacement... as MJPIA stated above, either his shop has it off of ebay OR mine as well.

What's your budget? Perhaps I can make you a special, exceptional offer via PM. Let us know.

Push back.
The $65 price is a canned response to anyone who contacts them asking for a spare battery.
You don't want a spare battery, you need a replacement for a battery that failed in 6 months.
Occasionally for GPD when their emails are swamped and they need to go through hundreds of them they'll give you some basic canned response as fast as they can and if you push back they usually will work with you.
Tell them again this battery died after only 6 months, you were promised a 12 month warranty for your $700 device and you want it replaced and see what them come back with the second time.
If they started off with the $65 price I doubt they'll replace it for free but there is a very large profit margin in that $65 pricetag they can cut out.

I've sent them a message explaining my situation again, hopefully they come back with a better response. Do you guys post to England?

I don't know if MJPIA ships overseas for this type of battery but I do.

If you would like to discuss a special rate, feel free to PM me at any time.

Turns out my wife read my email and already sent the payment to GPD as a gift for me. I don't know whether to be happy about it or not.

Anyway I sent them this message to see if they might partially refund me or something:

"Thank you, although I must say I am disappointed you charged me so much for something which should have been covered under warranty.

I purchased a GPD XD and a GPD Win 1 before backing the GPD Win 2 Indiegogo campaign, I may not be your best customer but I have spent a lot of money on your products.

This faulty battery is the only problem I have had, and it's happened in under 6 months of receiving the GPD Win 2. I understand that you are a small company and therefore cannot provide the kind of service that a much larger company can, but I am still disappointed you charge $65 for something that wasn't my fault.

Hopefully the new battery works fine. Thank you for the quick response anyway."

I doubt they'll get back to me about it, they've just sent me a tracking number. Thank you guys for all the help, I really appreciate it.

My current battery capacity has gone even further down to around 8000. This happened after I had the device in sleep for about a day and a half.

Could putting the Win 2 in sleep for extended periods of time negatively affect the batterys health? Because I think I had it in sleep or hibernate for around a month before experiencing these battery problems.

Something I noticed which never use to happen before is that the flashing charging light stays solid red when fully charged as well as making a kind of whining noise. I've just found out that this is normal. This never happened before, even when I first received the Win 2.

If anyone messes with the Battery or the Connector - BE VERY CAREFUL!! Think I damaged my Connector when I replaced some items. Now says "No Battery Detected"
