GPD Win 1 - eMMC suddenly disappears
« on: October 23, 2020, 09:38:53 pm »
Hi all!
I have a 1st batch GPD Win 1 I've been using for many years without a problem. I don't use it as often nowdays, but about a couple of hours a month. Last month the device worked. I played a bit, installed updates, charged the battery to the usual put-it-in-it's-box-65% and put it away. Today I take it out, turn it on, and it's the EFI boot console. Huh. Checked, nothing in the USB or microSD, so no weird boot devices, I reboot it. EFI console again. I go to the BIOS and there is no Windows entry. Weird. I plug in a windows installer USB, and nope, the eMMC is just not there. As a last ditch effort I boot again into the EFI console and try to list volumes and sure enough, there are none. The device don't see it's eMMC. Now I can't say it didn't serve me well over the years but I'd be sad to let it go just like this especially if it's somehow salvageable. If this is something of a common error and someone knows what to do, desolder, reflow or put a hex on, I'm willing to try it (as it probably won't get worse). I'm even open to ideas to solder to some test points and add a new eMMC module or PCIe-to-m.2 or something. I just fell it would be a colossal waste to let it die just like that...

Not sure if it's going to make any difference but try with disconnecting the battery from the board. Leave it without power for some time and then give it an other try.

Welp, left it disconnected for 12 hours, after reconnecting it lost the current time and date (reverted to 2016, I wish I could too!), but sadly no game, still won't see the eMMC.

You're most likely going to have to replace emmc, can be done if you know someone who does board repair or can do it yourself.

Other options are to boot an OS from USB, swap the motherboard or part it out.

If I'd know for 100% sure it's the eMMC flash IC, I'd find a guy to do it, but it could be and SMD resistor on the opposite end of the board providing some signal or voltage level for the IC. For now I've written to GPD, maybe they have some idea, I guess they must have had the most experience with failed boards. Maybe an engineer can tell "just short the test pin at D229 to the 7th leg of this IC and it'll start working again" or something...

Normally it's not only pin connection issue but IC self, my opinion is that you have to replace an emmc. Sure you have to do find a professional guy to to BGA soldering, it will take hours I thought.
