Tried fceux emulator and snes9x and cannot get the controls to work. Has anyone tried this?

Try Mednafen with MedGUI Reborn. Configuring the controls is easy with Mednafen.

Or just retroarch, that autodetect controls with xinput.

You mean Zsnes? Because zsnes is very unaccurate in comparison with snes9x or bsnes.

Zsnes you right, actually unless I'm getting a problem I don't really care about accurency, I'm using Zsnes since my childhood (I'm 27 now).

I never had any problems, lag or freezing, and I really like the GUI.

Well, zsnes has a nice gui, but sound emulation and accuracy is not very good. I used it in my 486 pc when I was Young.
I personally run most emus with retroarch, settings playlist and thumbnails and i have all in one gui except for ppsspp that I prefer to use standalone. Or for psx that I use epsxe because mednafen psx is slow.
