Title: GPD Win Buyers Guide
Post by: Macatron on November 23, 2016, 08:11:54 pm
Please vote for the company you've purchased from if you feel like you had a good experience. However, if you didn't have a good experience with a company please don't vote for that company because it will skew the results incorrectly.

Please DO leave a comment with your experiences (good or bad) because that really helps! :D

Due to the simple nature of this poll, it's easy to simply look at the results and determine that there's only one place worth purchasing a GPD Win from (which definitely isn't the case). I've heard a lot of postive things about both Belchine and MiComputer through users comments, but you'd never know that based on the poll results.

Thanks again, everyone, for posting up to share your experiences!

Belchine : I'm from France, and I bought him a Minix and the GPD Win, everything works flawlessly, and the SAV is really good. Really trust worthy reseller.

To me, EvilDragon service is really top notch, can't really talk about others, but he already fixed a Pandora I broke for free way after the end of the warranty... He's more expensive but make sure you take taxes in account, his prices are displayed with VAT already in and the VAT is deducted if you are from somewhere else in the world... I can't talk about Belchine but whatever you choose, given the chance to get a dude avoid the cheapest oversea sellers...

Thanks again for all of your detailed comments and also for voting! :D I've added Belchine and EvilDragon to the poll now to better round out the best place to purchase from. The editing options for this poll are very limited, so I did the best I could.

Please keep the votes coming! Thanks! :D

I bought mine from Aliexpress on the 11th of November. It languished in "preship" until the 16th which is when it got sent off.

Now today (24th) it's showing as "despatched to overseas". I assume it's sitting somewhere at Heathrow waiting for the customs guys to slap an import duty on it. I probably won't see this little guy until next week.

Ah, gotcha. I was just in Dublin earlier this year. It's really beautiful there! :D Do you know if Micomputer ships to the US? If so, they're definitely looking like the best place to order based on the poll results.

Well, I emailed Micomupter, at the email address below, to inquire about shipping to the US, and they responded almost immediately! Definitely great service!

[email protected]

They said that shipping to my state (Connecticut) is 40? ($42.23 US), and they said delivery time is within six working days. Sounds good to me! :D

If you're also in the US, and want a shipping estimate, just email them with your zip code. :)

I've ordered a GPD Win from GearBest.  Now I've got to play the waiting game because GearBest support told me that they probably won't ship it before December 22 when the pre-sale ends. That means that it won't be delivered before New Year.  :(

Sorry to hear about your long wait. That's terrible. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll ship it sooner than that.

I've bought mine in GeekBuying, but I've got to be honest - I can't decide if I should recommend buying here GPD Win or not. On the one hand - my order was very delayed, but I don't know how they dealt with this issue later (I've encountered the least fortunate situation, when they've run out (very limited) first batch.

They've solved relatively quickly my issue with incorrect windows key. And usb charger included was definitely broken (started to "hiss" after 3-4 hours of charging), for which I've received 5$ refund (I accepted it and didn't argue about this, because I can easily buy good usb charger for this money in Poland, and at this moment I don't even need to, because I already have one good, suitable for all devices I'm using).

Basing only on my experience, except irritating delay of shipping my order, everything else went good. However, I've got no idea how they're dealing with shipping of orders at this moment (if there are still these delays or not).

As for me, I'm currently between MiComputer, EvilDragon or willgoo.com. From what I've seen so far, it looks like willgoo.com ships the easiest to the US.

Same here. I ordered on Nov 10th (the PREVIOUS pre-sale) when it said they would ship out Nov 21st and then they started a new pre-sale. They still haven't shipped it so guess I'll have to wait until next year as well..

I ordered it on November 7th. GearBest customer support told me that I should be patient because they want to ship out a good product. It isn't the first time that I ordered from GearBest so it doesn't really bother me having to wait a little longer than I expected.

I can't talk about ordering a GPD WIN from ED, but I can talk about my Pandora. My Pandora was ordered from Craig, unfortunately, just like a lot of other peoples, but that order was not fulfilled. That's where ED came in, by just adding the difference between the pre-order and the retail price ED sent us a Pandora, at loss for him, through a part was covered by donations... Some years later, out of the guarantee period,  my daughter dropped my Pandora and a coil inside was broken, ED repaired it for free, and send it back without charging any shipping... That is how great he is...

Wow, thanks a lot for your trust and support :)
Always trying the best I can to help.

New GPD Win stock should arrive soon (I hope GPD can dispatch them this week).

I am currently trying to create a bootable Windows stick which I can use to test the 3D driver before shipping the units - so I want to make sure only working units will be shipped out :)

Do you ship to the US? If so, could you please provide me with an estimate to this zip code?

+1000 for ED.....

Great service to me here in California.

ED answered my questions quickly. Even if it was night time for him in Germany....don't think he sleeps.....much.

As promised, as soon as he got delivery of WINs, he shipped mine out and got it about 2 days later half way around the world.....

Nice!....

I see that you have a new shipment of GPD Wins that just came in. Have you been able to get that bootable Windows stick setup in order to test these new units?

Thanks!

I didn't get a new shipment yet - that email was sent out because someone cancelled his preorder and ONE unit became available (and it's gone already again ;))

But it shouldn't take too long hopefully until GPD sends me the next batch (I ordered 200 of them).

I will probably have some more inbetween, as I kept some units for possible replacements and I already replaced all broken units I know of, so these few will be ready for sale as soon as I tested them.

I'm still fighting a bit with the bootable stick, but I'll get it done eventually ;)

I pre-ordered my unit from ED one month before the actual release.

2 days before the actual shipping I noticed that I would not be home during the estimated arrival time of the unit.
Sent an email to ED to inform him about my new shipping address and received an answer within half an hour that my shipping address has been updated - that's how fast they are.

Due to me being impatient I also kept refreshing the order status on his tracking page. My order was sent out literally the same day as it arrived at ED's shop which resulted in me having it on the next day. No problems at all.

I also read a lot of good reviews and stories about amazing after sale support by ED which was one of the main decision factors for me to buy from them. Sure it may be a bit more expensive due to import taxes in the EU and Germany, but to be honest I will gladly pay an extra 20 bucks to save me from the headaches from customer support of the likes of geekbuying and others. We are talking about a relatively cheap chinese device after all which was bound to have problems.

My device luckily has been flawless so far even though it was part of the first batch. I even get higher benchmark scores then some of the other GPD Win owners on these forums.

Glad to hear that you're getting so many units in your next shipment. That should be good for everyone especially with Christmas coming up. :)

That's also nice to hear that you're keeping a few units to the side to use for replacements. Just another level of awesome customer service!

Thanks for taking the extra time to make the end users happy! It's definitely appreciated!

Thanks for sharing your story here too! I think it's important to see real world customer feedback whenever you're buying anything. Being that the GPD Win doesn't have the most reliable track record (at least with the early units), the place you buy it from becomes paramount. That being said, ED looks like they've got their customer's backs 100%! :D

If you can cancel, do it, and then order from Belchine, more reliable, shipping from Belgium.

I'm from France too and I received it after 3 days, colissimo with signature.

I'm a member of open-console and he is a reseller on this website too, you can try to follow the dedicated topic on it, we have another person on it that purchased it from him and that is in the same situation.

I really don't know, but the kind of thing remind me when you order from a company like DinoDirect, Willgo, Gearbest, Aliexpress and you try to have information or a good after sale service that you won't get from those company.

If you can cancel and get back your money, do it.

Just an advice, if you can get any reply from the shop you ordered it, just ask for refund and buy it from a shop that you trust.

To me Belchine is the best, and it's in Belgium.

More expensive but great homemade SAV is Dragonbox and MICROCOMPUTER es seems good too.

Had a very good experience with dragonbox.
Great support, very customer friendly, very quick shipping within germany. I got my replacement within a few days.
The owner is also active in forums such as openHandhelds.de or pyra-handheld.com.

Just a quick update:
I did manage to get a bootable USB stick... but as it was an old stick, it was slow as hell, and working with it often caused Windows to lock up because of USB3 driver errors.

So I figured out it's faster just using the normal GPD Win OS, installing FurBench for a 20min burn-in test and then reflash the full system (which is nice, as GPD also included other test-tools there, so I can test even more of the system :D)

2 out of 10 units had the 3D issue, so it's not as bad as many thought.
(This is from the first batch - GPD is testing all units from the next batch themselves!)

If anyone bought from me and has the 3D issue: I now have tested replacement units, so we can exchange them anytime.

And the next batch should hopefully arrive end of this or early next week :)

That's awesome news! Thanks for posting up! :D I'm really happy to hear that GPD is taking this 3D issue seriously, and uping their quality control. Definitely a positive sign!

I guess I was one of the lucky ones who got one of the 8/10 working devices!

This thread isn't really fair, How you supposed to know if a shop is good if no one never buy anything from?

I'm French and we are really few here, but lots of French customers buy stuff from Belchine, and they aren't on Dingoonity.

You should change the title into something appropriated.

I'm not really sure I understand what you're trying to say. This poll included Belchine, so anyone that has purchased one through them could've simply voted for them and left a reply detailing their experience.

As for the title, I thought it was pretty clear as to what the thread was all about. I'm also confused on how this isn't fair. It's a simple poll thread where people can vote for a reliable place to purchase a GPD Win and also talk about their experiences (good or bad). I created this thread because so many people were getting jerked around with a lot of the Chinese companies that were selling them. Also, a lot of people that wanted to buy one were hesitant to do so because they didn't know a reliable place to purchase one.

Am I missing something?

" Best and more reliable " it means that if someone doesn't vote for a shop, it means it's not reliable and worthy? To me I read it like this.

Adding a shop to that poll doesn't mean that it is reliable, it's a comparison, in your poll some of those shop are really so-so, but still get more vote than a reliable shop because no foreign people never ordered from it.

I don't blame your poll or people that doesn't order from it, is just that it's missleading.

If I only read your Poll with that title, Belchine is the worst shop to order ever.

It's not true and somemore open-consoles' forum (big French forum) has a partnership with Belchine, and lots of customers on it (that aren't here) can prove it.

Ah, I see what your saying. If someone were to simply look at the poll results, like you said, they're not going to know that Belchine or MiComputer are reliable too. I recently emailed MiComputer a while back to inquire about shipping charges to the US, and the rep that took care of my question was extremely helpful.

I'll see if I can find a better way to word the thread title to better reflect this. :)

To the people  reading this thread to find a good place to buy from, whatever you do, avoid DinoDirect. Mine likely won't arrive until sometime next year and I won't even know whether or not it's a broken unit.
I have no experience with Belchine and microcomputers, but I only hear good things about them. I wholeheartedly recommend DragonBox though. Prices are higher, but it's worth it for the customer service.
Buying a final batch Pandora was a very pleasant experience (though mine arrived with an unexpected defective charging port; mini USB still works so no biggy and ED was helpful in trying to find the sourve of the problem, within reason). How many retailers do you know who will not only make separate listings for units with no battery and a discount so that importers won't have to pay insanely high shipping costs, but will also painstakingly make separate listings for slightly defective but heavily discounted units (and battery-less versions of each) so that people who have always wanted a Pandora but couldn't afford one could get one for a cheaper price?

I ordered from DinoDirect 11/29 and received (U.S.) approx. 3 weeks later. I was happy, since I wasn't expecting it any faster. Had two issues (inc non-working Windows activation key), I emailed them and had a response within 6 hours and all was good...

Sorry for the late reply to this thread. Pre-Christmas time is always horror for an online shop (DragonBox Shop, in case someone doesn't know).

We should've received more GPD Wins 2 weeks ago, but DHL Express sent them back to the sender (GPD), probably because there were too many batteries in the full shipment.

GPD resent the package (with less units) and it's already in Germany this time so it should arrive tomorrow.
Finally!

Another thing I want to do is taking a look at the graphics chip fix of the first production run.
From what I've seen from videos and pictures, it looks like a simple fix which we can easily do.

If that turns out to be true, I'll offer that fix for 10 EUR (+ shipping costs) for everyone who needs it.
That means: You send your GPD Win here, we fix it and send it back, for 10 EUR and the shipping costs.

I had the idea as some of my customers contacted me and asked whether I could do that, as they got it through Indiegogo and just paying to ship it back to GPD would've cost 120 EUR.

Of course, this is only really useful if you're living within Europe, as otherwise, shipping costs to me would also be insanely high, but I hope that at least this is hopeful for some of you who got it through Indiegogo and don't want to pay the high shipping costs to GPD.

I'll keep you updated!

What graphics chip fix are you referring to exactly? Are you talking about adding the copper shim to reduce overall system temperatures? If so, I think just about everyone would like to have that done to their GPD Win. :) If this is what you're referring to, would you be up for doing this on a unit before shipping it out for a new purchase? Obviously for an additional charge. :D Thanks!

Ah, gotcha. So, just so I understand this issue correctly, it only effected the original backer units right? The new ones you have in stock are free of this issue? Thanks!

Correct. The ones we'll have are the new tested ones.

But someone (from Germany) contacted me and asked whether something like that would be possible, as the only other solution he had was paying 120 EUR shipping costs to ship it back to China.
Shipping it to me would be a lot faster and cheaper (about 5 EUR), so that fix makes sense :)

I just bought it from GeekBuying at the current price of $360 (with a discount and includes a free case) and I used a -$15 coupon. I live in Argentina and used EMS for shipping (it costs $36.12), so I payed $380.12 for everything but I'll porbably have to pay some taxes here too.

I'll update everyone with any news.

Just a quick update:
The biggest change of the revised version of the GPD Win is the DPad: It will get a better silicone mat (though we don't know yet if it's really better - GPD said so, but I'd wait for some tests :))

Anyone who bought a unit at my shop will get the new silicon mat for free, if he wants to.
Just send me a mail with your order number or name ([email protected])

And if you send us your unit, we'll modify it for free (except for shipping costs when living outside of Germany). However, if you're fine with your DPad, there's no need to do that.
I haven't used the new mat yet, so I have no idea if it's really better or not.

Unfortunately not providing a positive story or site from which to purchase... but after 2 months of waiting for gearbest to deliver, today canceled my order and asked for a refund.  Should have done it weeks ago.

Perhaps I was unlucky, but was strung along with a slew of implausible excuses.  So think twice before ordering from them.

Should have been patient and waited for Ed to have them in stock...

My GPD Win from GearBest is still not delivered but I can't blame them. I don't know what the problem is and it makes me angry. I don't know if it's customs that doesn't want to release it or BPost that doesn't want to deliver it. If I've got to ask for a refund because of this it's probably going to be the end of the GPD story for me.  :(

Ed - please let us all know when you receive the new dpad silicons and how they differ.  Thanks.

Is there an easy way to tell what "version" you have? I read a post from one user stating he got the newest one because it had a Steam shortcut on the desktop and an HDMI plug. The one I received had the shortcut but no plug.

I think I've got one from the same batch as ED. It has the glossy look and uses the Samsung drive. Advanced settings are still available in the BIOS. It's probably the version you would like to buy because the latest batch seem to come with a slower Toshiba drive and a crippled BIOS. The dpad is supposed to be working better on the latest batch but I don't know how because it works just fine on my GPD Win.

I prefer having the "older" version as well. Temperatures were never a problem for me on my devices.
And for the mats, I will just get the new replacement mats from ED since he promised to give them out for free to his customers.

It's possible that mine already use the new mats because it's super soft to push the dpad. I've got no other device to compare it with so I don't really know. Maybe ED does.

It's possible that mine already use the new mats because it's super soft to push the dpad. I've got no other device to compare it with so I don't really know. Maybe ED does.

What you are describing sounds more like the old "mushy" keymatts. The new ones are said to have a rather snappy feel.

How hard is it to switch to the new controller membranes?

Sadly, I didn't receive the new units and keymats yet.
I've ordered and paid them a week before GPD went off to new year holidays so they can ship them before... but apparently, they didn't bother with that.

So my units and silicon mats are still lying in China, waiting to be shipped once they return from holidays... geez.

Bought my gpd win from dragonbox.de last night, but I'm waiting for the tracking number. Hopefully I will get it very soon since I got express shipping (1 to 3 days).

edit: Forgot to mention I'm from the US.

It'll ship on Monday (UPS doesn't pick up on Saturday), so you'll receive the tracking number someday Monday afternoon.

You should receive it until Wednesday evening :)

Thanks for the response. By any chance, do you know which model I am going to get? Is it going to be the new one with z8750 and Samsung emmc?

I can send you a Rev 2, yes. Not sure whether it has the Z8750 installed, according to other posts here, it should, but as GPD never made an official announcement, you never know.

Got my GPD Win today. The console works, the buttons work and the Windows key works, so I'm happy with it. Bought it from Geekbuying on January 9, they shipped it on January 13 and it arrived to Argentina's customs on January 25.

Now, for anyone from Argentina thinking on buying this:
First, if you don't pay for a courier you'll have to pay the taxes (50% of the console price) and will have to get it from customs. Even if you pay for EMS delivery (I did), the "puerta a puerta" service doesn't include packages which cost more than U$D200. You'll get one telegram saying that it can be delivered to you, you'll complete all the paperwork from the AFIP website and you'll get a second telegram telling you that you have to go to customs.

At the end, the total cost was: 380 dollars for the console plus EMS shipping, 177 dollares in taxes, and 100 pesos to Correo Argentino.

If I had to buy it again I'd buy from Geekbuying with DHL shipping, of from EvilDragon with UPS. It costs more but in theory you get it delivered directly to you without paying anything else.

Looks like mine had some hazardous material issue during shipping, does anyone know if that's common?

Is that accurate? I'm in the UK, and if parcels arrive with DHL or UPS you will ALWAYS have to pay import tax and handling fee according to people using those services. So they recommend to NOT use couriers. Try the standard shipping method and then it's just bad luck that they stop your parcel, and you'll have to pay hefty taxes and handling fee, or good luck that it arrives without any extra charge.

I don't recommend DHL, even if you don't have any taxes to pay they will charge you the handling. DHL charges twice, the shipping plus the delivery. They are thieves.

Yes, the same thing happens here in Spain. If you select UPS, DHL or similar couriers you'll pay import tax for sure. Standard shipping from China is really slow but if you're lucky you'll not pay any extra.

Cool, thanks for confirming guys. I got confused with the comment that it was a good idea to choose DHL or UPS for shipping. That was never the case as far as I knew...

Sorry, maybe I shouldn't have said that since I didn't use that method, I just mixed the costs of shipping and another experience buying from Amazon UK. I ordered something from amazon, payed only what Amazon said (which included the cost of shipping) and I didn't have to pay anything else, but maybe that's something only Amazon does.

Ah yes, Amazon and ebay have some international programmes for certain products where they include all fees in their prices (if they're bought from their official shop, not from 3rd parties). But when you buy for most of the rest of the shops, they just use an international postage method and the tax can or cannot be applied depending on methods and luck.

Where I was going is... that I think you didn't pay much more than by using other methods, maybe even less (ie, don't think you made a bad option by avoiding DHL and UPS, good one there!). It was just an unlucky event, but if you enjoy the device... oh well, it's a one-off purchase and you didn't have many options. Enjoy it now!! :)

Looks like the one you shipped to me is getting sent back to you for hazardous materials. I opened up a support ticket so I can deal with that on there, but I think people should know that might happen to anyone.

Huh! That's weird!
No, that's NOT normal. Of course it has hazardous material (batteries), that's why it's marked properly on the package and has all the needed papers included.
That's the first time that happens - and we've shipped a LOT of GPD Wins to USA already.

Maybe someone wasn't doing the job properly and was overcautious?

Don't worry, we'll sort that out!

I already had it, since I have all the tracking details myself as well.

I'm trying to get this sorted out as fast as possible, hopefully the package will be back tomorrow so we can take care of reshipping it right away.

I'm sorry for the issue - I'll let you know what went wrong once I find out. I can imagine they changed some detail about shipping devices with batteries again.. they do that about once a year and you find that out when the package comes back to you.

Got an update:
Apparently, batteries with more than 20Wh are now dangerous goods for UPS, so they won't transport them.
We've talked with TNT already and they're okay for them, so we'll reship your unit with TNT.

It should take 1 - 2 days and it will either be reshipped today or tomorrow (I don't know yet whether my shipping provider got the packages back in time for TNT Pickup today).

However, I don't know if they deliver on Saturday, so it might be Monday.

Yeah, I saw that out of 4 packages that should've arrived that day, only 1 arrived.

Maybe it has to do with customs - customs can unexpectedly delay a package.
TNT should know what the reason is though.
