Hi, I'm new to the GPD XD and have had mine delivered yesterday. Whilst looking around the web this morning I found this site listing V3.3.8.

http://pan.baidu.com/share/home?uk=389368662&view=share#category/type=0 (http://pan.baidu.com/share/home?uk=389368662&view=share#category/type=0)

Is this site the correct one to look for the latest firmware updates?

Thanks.

Install RK drivers and use a Windows 7 and usb 2.0 port:

https://mega.nz/#!5wAlwYKA!f4pro3keYGj6iFoZFd9vo7Ic4-bARefLvDBP7hVWO5U

If you are using win 10 it's a no-go until RK update drivers.

Is your SD card more than 32 GB? You can only update firmware if you use SD card 32 GB or less

Title: Re: The latest firmware of GPD game console
Post by: lol_username on November 17, 2015, 07:05:21 pm
According to the description:
1. The optimization of the built-in joystick driver rocker boundary problem.
2. The specific problems to restart black part of the equipment under repair.

To be honest I have no idea what the second one means :D.

Btw, I think the new OTA feature is quite funny. It basically just gives you a Baidu link :D.

I recently updated to 3.3.8 hoping that the improvements to the analog drivers would resolve some issues with sensitivity I had faced in games like Real Racing 3-- I was wrong.

No perceivable improvement over 3.3.7.

Not taking the piss but I still feel that PPSSPP was markedly smoother while I was on 3.3.2. hmph

no, they added OTA in that update, to get it you still have to download. then for future updates, you will get them OTA.

At least that?s howI understand it?

That's correct yes. OTA means Over The Air, essentially meaning like some manufacturers like LG (my current phone) and custom ROMs, the developer can push updates to the internet and you can downloaded them and install them directly on your device without having to download them from a website on your PC/device and install them using the RKbatchtool or the SD2flash method via the device itself.

I think, they deleted SuperSU because some idiots already bricked some consoles by wrong using of root. When root is preinstalled from factory it means that using of this root do not avoid Guarantee.
So, they don't want to accept bricked by users devices.

I think that someone claimed on GPD and wanted full refund for a bricked (with preinstalled root) device.

That's why they removed root and from now they can say that your root and your brick - is only your problem. No warranty on root-bricks. Its logical.

Can you offer two firmwares, 3.3.10.noroot and 3.3.10.root, so that the people who want root can get it?

I miss my root.  I was really liking tincore keymapper.

I also want 1.6 and 1.8 ghz kernels for the q9.  I am tempted to build them myself, but I don't see why GPD couldn't provide them since the tablets are capable.

Right at the top of my OP in the issue thread, I have a link to where I find all the firmware:

Where I get the firmware and Addon Files:
   GPD's Baidu File Location: http://pan.baidu.com/share/home?uk=389368662&view=share#category/type=0

You will always find the latest and greatest there.  It can take hours to download at times, so be ready.

Yo, GPD noob here. Just got my XD yesterday, and right now I'm trying to get everything set up. So I'm at the System Update app, and there's a download link for the latest firmware (3.3.9) and what seems to be some pre-install files (3.1). Should I install these 3.1 files before installing 3.3.9 or should I just go straight to 3.3.9? The last thing I want to do is brick my system the day after I got it.

EDIT: For reference, the update app says I have 3.0 installed

Download 3.3.9 from this thread : http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/lets-talk-xd-issues/

Drop the update.img file in the root of a FAT32 formatted MicroSD and reboot the device, it will detect the update and prompt to reboot and the update will install.

3.4.0 is also available but as of yet there are no release notes or changelog so I've been holding off on installing it.

Considering that it came out pretty fast, I am thinking that it fixed something from 3.3.9.  Although, I've found no issues with either.

Yeah, it's just odd that it doesn't show up in the "software update" app yet.

Anyone know if 3.4.0 firmware update continues to remove 'root' settings as 3.3.9 did??

Any info. would be appreciated as I am debating to install 3.4.0 myself later today...

Yep, 3.4.0 removes SuperSU but you can simply install it with the SuperSU zip file in the 1st post.
I have it running (with SuperSu root) since it was posted here by LordDavon. Been stable for me!

Please forgive the dumb question but what does it matter if the system is rooted or not? I'm an android virgin.
As said in this perfect thread (https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/236/what-does-to-root-a-phone-mean),
Quote
To 'root' your phone means to gain administrative rights on the file system of your phone (in linux, root is the username of the master admin). With root access, you can install and uninstall anything you want on the phone.

Most phones come with limited access regarding what you can and can't do on it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it can keep users from accidentally breaking something they shouldn't mess with on the phone, especially in regards to the operating system. However, many manufacturers limit your rights to things that aren't really so mission critical, too, and rooting the phone gets around this.

If you have a few unnecessary applications (bloatware) pre-installed on your phone that you cannot uninstall, rooting will give you this ability. It will also allow you to upgrade to newer versions of Android before your phone's manufacturer and/or cell provider make the updates available to you. Be warned, though, that rooting may void your warranty.

I appreciate your reply but it doesn't really address the question. I can understand why you'd root a phone if it has a terrible custom interface and you want to change it. But as for the GPD XD in specific, what does one gain by rooting it?

You need root to backup/restore your apps in system (Titanium Backup is the best imho) or for changing the CPU governor (for better performance/battery life).
You can install an ad-blocker for any apps or browsing that have ads.
Any app that accesses or manages any OS files will need root.

Of course, Android is designed to run without root access so you'll have a perfectly fine experience.
Titanium Backup is good for backing up the saves/settings from native Android games so you don't lose them if something goes wrong with the OS or you just want to reflash the firmware.

With tincore keymapper, there are options not available with the default keymapper.  For example, I can use the d-pad to play pac man 256, because it expects a gesture rather than touching a specific spot on the screen.  Tincore keymapper requires root.

tip - if you want the original firmware for happy chick (the only advantage really) you can get it for free from the official website for any android device, so for that you don't need to reflash http://www.happychick.hk/en.html

I don't know how to reflash sorry I never updated firmware on either Q9 or xD( my q9 is still on April firmware happily and XD on august no problems at all so no reason to upgrade for me ^^)

I agree - my XD works perfectly with it's December firmware as delivered. I'm not upgrading, installing launchers or rooting it. I can totally see why people do that (some launchers do look really nice and tinkering is fun), but I love the stability too much to futz with it, and my PS1 save states are too valuable. Open it, play a game, close it - that's all I do. Maybe there will be a firmware release in the future that will tickle my fancy, but until then I'm leaving well alone.

Try using tincore keymapper- it offers a range of presets for the better-known gamepads-- chances are one of these presets will land you the right configuration for GTA. If not, you can also use tincore to manually reassign gamepad buttons and map them to your preference.

I reckon 3.4.2 is the latest issue-- links should be up in the "let's talk issues" thread.

In the past I had gone up to 3.3.8 and then been disappointed and reverted to 3.3.2 but I've just recently moved to the latest version and I quite like it so far. Nothing dramatically different, tbh.

Just note that the version 3.4.x do not come pre-rooted so you'd have to also d'load the SuperSU flashable from the same thread and install it via recovery- takes like a minute.

I used the batch tool so I'm not sure if the SD method will work although there's no real reason why it shouldn't

If you change the controller input to XBOX it will work as intended.
Not sure why the PS3 input does this on the XD as the DS3 works correctly on other android devices with SixAxis pair or whatever that app is called (been a long time since I used it).

Hi everybody,
big problem here.

Tried to update my GPD XD to the latest 3.4 directly from microSD but I think it's now half-bricked. Tha console is stuck on the boot logo screen :-(

Tried to boot it in loader mode (vol- + power as far as I know) but it failed anyway.

I downloaded ROckchip batch tool 1.8 and my OS is Windows 10. Any idea on how to recover the situation?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I am assuming that the RKBatch tool did not detect your device and that's what your problem is-- because there's not reason why this tool cannot recover the XD.

I had some issues with getting the batch tool to detect my XD on Win 8.1. Firstly, ensure that you install the drivers that come bundled with the batch tool. If you still have issues, try this fix which worked for me. I am posting the excerpt from another forum:

"Now: as for the config.ini modification, I found on minixforums a post by user Snurb that does the trick.  You open config.ini (located in the same folder where the .exe file is) and look for this line:

LOGFLAG=TRUE
#SUPPORTLOWUSB=TRUE时,扫描支持full speed usb设备,默认只支持high speed usb设备
SUPPORTLOWUSB=

This you change into:

LOGFLAG=TRUE
#SUPPORTLOWUSB=TRUE时,扫描支持full speed usb设备,默认只支持high speed usb设备
SUPPORTLOWUSB=TRUE
FULLSPEEDUSB=TRUE

Save & close. "

i semi-bricked my gpd xd going from 3.3.x to 3.4.2, the screen stayed unresponsive, the light turned green and went to red when i plugged it in, and connection sound was made but nothing else.  no recovery, no holding vol+.

could not connect with rkbatchtool on windows 10.  it turns out the win 8.1 rockusb driver was not compatible with windows 10 out of the box and it was reporting device not functioning error in device manager.

i was able to get the driver working properly by uninstalling the device in device manager, manually copying the rkbatchtool 1.7 win8.1 x64 win8.1 driver to c:\windows\system32\drivers and also manually updating the driver for the device in device manager and pointing it at the rkbatchtool 1.7/x64/8.1 folder.  somewhere in there it worked correctly and i was able to connect with rkbatchtool and install the old firmware.

hope this helps someone.

Great advice. And here's some of mine: don't upgrade. Unless there's a feature you absolutely can not do without (which would be surprising considering how few features are added to each iteration) it's not worth the risk. I totally get that people want to tinker though!

Good afternoon,
I received a few hours ago my GPD XD and I tried to update the firmware. As first using the online tool but it was a persistent connection error with the server then by using the offline firmware.
I copied it on my SD Card and the update was completed with no error at first boot in recovery mode but now... the console doesn't boot up anymore.

If I connect it on the PC it stays in RED led icon. If I un-plug it it is the green color but no screen or sound.

How can I restore it?

Thanks...

It's still 4.4.4, but there's not a whole lot to be gained in regards to performance or useful features between K and L/M for this device.  You can make the look/feel of the device like L/M by changing the launcher.

Install LegacyROM 2.0 instead. It's much better than any of the original firmwares. You'll want root for any CPU management apps like SetCPU which is recommended to get the best performance out of it.

http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/(rom)-legacyrom-2-0-for-q9-and-q9psv/

FYI if you get the one with the PlayStation Vita analog sticks, that's the PSV. Otherwise the regular flat ones are standard. You won't do any damage in flashing the wrong one, your analog sticks just won't work. I also recommend the 1.8GHz version.
The difference being you'll get the extra little bit of speed for things like PPSSPP but it will heat up faster (perfectly safe) and drain the battery faster.

Will be getting my GPD XD soon. If my unit comes with Chinese ROM (no google play store), how do I update my unit to English ROM? Which ROM is the most stable ROM?

Just rec'd my GPD XD yesterday and it is already loaded with 3.4.7 with play store pre-installed, guess the seller was simply giving inaccurate answer to me. Had installed Atari 2600, NES, SNES, MD, GBA, GBC & epsxe and all running well. Will look into N64, DC & PPSSPP later.

Try out Skelton's Legacy ROM... it's fantastic.

Yes, still considering as I find wifi speed is slow but haven't run into problem with gaming, will monitor for a few days before deciding.

Hello. Is the kernel number my current firmware? Also is a different ROM than stock recommended, and if so which one would you guys recommend?

Thanks for any information!

Look at the build number, latest stock ROM is 3.4.7. LegacyROM is the custom ROM with overclocked speed for better gaming performance.

Is the Kernel version the same thing as the Firmware version? Is there anyone here using Retroarch nightly builds? I need help on configuring the navigation through the new interface menus, the physical keys are misconfigured and I cannot access the settings menu.

No, firmware version is build number. For Retroarch, just use Ps3 mode with the gamepad app that comes with the device and device is autodetected (unless they broke something in latest nighlies)

Oh, thanks for the information. My Firmware version is 3.4.7 so I guess it's up to date. Anyway, now I've got the Retroarch menu to work properly. I had to set the Gamepad app to PS3 mode and do a clear/close in the gamepad mapper (the button with a controller icon) inside Retroarch. After that the navigation worked just fine!

Now I'm tweaking some video settings and trying to get some games to work at full speed with the latest MAME core. Is there any way to increase the performance rather than replacing the firmware with that hacked ROM that overclock the system? I don't want to go that way because that firmware drains too much battery and heats up the equipment faster, so I guess it would reduce the GPD XD lifespam significantly. Thanks people! :)

Forget about mame core in Retroarch. It's based on mame .174 and is too demanding for GPd XD. Even shield TV (which is the more powerful android device out) cannot handle it properly. For MAMe the best and almost only option is mame4droid 0.139 from google play store. And FBA core from Retroarch for other arcade boards.

If you are interested in Saturn emulation, forget it using your current firmware, since 3.4.7 uses new mali drivers that breaks uoyabause performance.  If you don't want to use custom firmware (I have a 1,4 ghz version just like your stock firmware), the best stock firmware is 3.4.2, since is the last one with the best mali drivers. But it's up to you and the things you need to emulate.

As far as I know, GPD won't probably release more firmwares for this device, and me neither. so those are basically your choices.

Hi Skelton, just one question regarding firmware, is there any real improvements that could be achieved? I mean, the new mali drivers weren't so great. I'm still waiting for my XD to arrive, but i used the legacy rom for the G5A for more than 2 and a half years and i never had not even one single issue while i used it. Actually i always had this feeling that this device was running at the best way it could, so it seemed that there was no real improvement to be done.

regarding mali drivers, we depend on Rockchip. New mali drivers are worse, but they are close source, so I can only add better drivers if rockchip makes them. supposedly GPD was going to do a Android 6.0 update. But for gaming is not really a great improvement, since mali drivers are also bad in android M, so prrobably GPD won't update it anymore.  I don't think there is no much to be done unless Rockchip provides new mali drivers or something extra. I think RK3288 is pretty much optimized in terms of performance. I want to take a look to the rom to see if I can optimize it a bit more, but I won't have a XD again until christmas (my brother hasit right now)

That's something good to know, Skelton. Sure it will be great if you can be able to squeeze a little bit more of performance. Hope your health is improving and getting better these days.

Is the latest GPD XD firmware 3.4.8 legit?

Is the latest GPD XD firmware 3.4.8 legit?

It's legit because it has been uploaded on their official site (www.gpd.hk). I wonder what changes they made, I'm still using stock firmware v3.4.2 and some games don't work (i.e. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse) but they work on v3.4.7. However I don't want to use v3.4.7 because Saturn emulation is really bad with the new Mali drivers (hopefully in v3.4.8 they fixed the Mali drivers while keeping better compatiblity with some Android games). Anyone tested the new firmware?

I didn't tested because I don't have my XD with me, but I extracted it and the mali module is about 6 MG, so that means same mali drivers as 3.4.7. For shantae perhaps you can try GLTools and spoof the GPU to another one. (I didn't know that game was for Android, it seems listed only on amazon store for their android devices,)  the changes in 3.4.8 probably are very minimal because the firmware is not even listed here in the main account of the devs of GPD android firmwares....
https://pan.baidu.com/share/home?uk=389368662#category/type=0

I don't think Rockchip release new GPU userspace libraries for kitkat, because RK3288 has the same issues in Lollipop and 6.0 regarding mali (broken uoyabauase), so perhaps Rockchip fix it when they release a good Android M sdk for RK3288. But no idea if GPD will update to android M unless Rockchip improves their SDK, probably not.
