that should work:

http://www.kingoapp.com/

Thanks for the info, skelton, but the kingo root fails. I've tried root genius and it failed as well. Could it be because I upgraded to 4.4.4.? Is there a way to downgrade to 4.4.2.?

Strange, I have used kingoroot in other RK3188 devices with 4.4.4 and worked fine for me.

Try this:

http://www.srsroot.com/

I don't know if you can't downgrade to 4.4.2. I think all stock firmwares for g7a are 4.4.4, and my firmware is not compatible so....

SRS root doesn't seem to detect the device. Says "ADB Device: NOT FOUND" However I've installed the rockchip USB drivers and it appears as "Android Composite ADB Device" on my device manager in windows. Maybe I'm having trouble with the drivers?

Maybe a reason. If you are using win 8.1 try with a windows 7 or xp.

Or try with the following autoinstalled drivers:

Solved using srsroot under win7 run as admin. Thanks skelton!

I don't understand why it seems every device like this has a D-pad issue. They market these things to old school/emu lovers, but they don't realize that the D-pad is CRUCIAL TO old school games

All I want is a 5" or 7" Android portable with good screen, dual analog, L1/L2 + R1/R2, and fully working D-pad
