Review: The GPD G7
« on: February 17, 2014, 11:34:23 pm »
Geekbuying generously supplied me with a GPD G7 to review.

I'm really enjoying the GPD G7 and I'm continuing to be surprised by the quality of the Android consoles coming out of China these days. It's a huge jump from the days of the Dingoo A320 back in 2009.

You can see the review here: http://blog.omgmog.net/post/more-portable-android-gaming-with-the-gpd-g7/

You can buy the GPD G7 from Geekbuying with 10$ off, using this coupon code MMITLRCJ, here: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/GPD-G7-RK3188-1-6GHz-7-inch-GamePad-Android-4-2-Quad-Core-Capacitive-Touch-Screen-1024-600-1GB-8GB-Tablet-PC-324409.html

How did it feel compared to the GPD G5A (quality and comfort wise)? Also, did it perform identically to the G5A? I am wondering about that because it does have a slightly higher resolution. Also, how did the screen look in comparison?
Handhelds: 3DS XL, GBA SP, PSP, GP2X Wiz, JXD 7100B, JXD100, Various other handhelds that include emulators and built-in games (their generic names escape me at this moment but some are actually cool.)
Tablets: Nook HD+, Entourage Edge
Consoles: XBOX 360, XBOX original, PS3, Wii, N64, 3DO, GameCube.

Nice review but you  mentioned the screen was not bright out of the box and I wish you had a pic of the G7 and Nexus turned on at full brightness head on for a comparison.

I has both devices, although right now I'm playing with G5A solely (waiting for a left stick's replacement for G7). I must say they're both lightweight, sturdy and comfortable to hold, but G7 is a bit  too big to be used on the go, in my opinion. But it's great device for playing home, on the couch. And for game streaming, in particular, I think. I wish GPD made it 8" or even 9". Just wait before Deen0x will get his sample...

I need to charge my Nexus 7, but I'll get a photo of that for you later  8)

Deen0x is getting the 7" model as well or is there a 8, 9" coming?

I meant the former (sample for Deen0x - he will record a lots of videos about G7, incl. streaming games). As for 8-9+ inchers, I think it's possible to expect them later if G7 will be triumphant.

For now, the only devices that come from GPD is:

GPD-G5A+ (same as G5A, but 2GB RAM, IPS Screen and rk3288)

there are 3 other models that most probably will be announced in some time, but for now there is no info about them. (will be 5", 7" and a set top box)

when i get more info i will post.

Thanks OMGMOG :)
The more pics the better, the only thing holding me back getting this over a JXD S7800 is the screen quality.

Very nice :)
The G5A+ sounds very nice any idea if they update the GPD G7 with the same hardware ?
A IPS screen and 2GB of RAM sound amazing.

I am leaning towards this but I am a little concerned about the quality of the screen. In many videos I've seen of the two GDP devices the screen looks like it has a prominent blue tint. If I am looking directly at the screen do the colors look good or is the blue really that noticeable?

mine videos have blue screens, but this is because my camera color balance fail when try to capture the screen of the device.

really the device colors looks good.

Here are few vids that i capture with "correct" color balance on my camera.

If I am looking into getting a device in the next few months should I go ahead and get the GPD-G7 or wait to see if they release a GPD-G7+

Thanks, Deen0X, for posting the update with the videos. Now I'm not so afraid. :) I think I'll just get the GPD G7. The reviews so far have really convinced me.

sincerelly, if you want to wait for the perfect device... you will never get one, because when you get one, manufacturers will be announcing the evolution of the same device, with improvements, etc, etc.

if you want to get one of any android device, get what you consider is suitable for you, based on the current offer.
put a list with your preferences, ordered by priority, and based on this check what you can get on the current devies that manufacturers offer.

about "plus" versions, of course will be better than their original versions, but will be more cost too. GPD-G5A is a device with a very convenient ration between specs and price, but if you consider that this device may be not enough for you, then wait for another version... or another device from another manufacturer. the good news for us, android portable gaming devices users, is that in different way than known companies than Sony or Nintendo, we have many alternatives where select what we want to buy... and will come more :D

Zalu2!
