GPD chose that d-pad because it was the most suitable due to XD being clamshell and all :)

Agreed, but still a *bit* bigger and less mushy should have been possible... Now its bad for arcade retro gaming (fighting, shoot them ups unless you like to play them with joystick anyway) and great for modern android games. The exact opposite  of the q9 :-)

Tough when you think about it, the same would be true for the vita, 3ds, ds, noone complains about those because they are not used to play arcade on XD :o

The Pandora is as well a clamshell device and got a great d-pad. Can't say what engineering or quality parts are needed for this result, but it shouldn't make a XD much more expensive in my opinion.

Maybe a stupid question but i will ask anyway:

Is the GPD XD capable of playing any SNES game full speed without any framedrops and frameskipping?

i want to play Yoshi's Island on a device like this. (special chip game)

thanks

Yes, and for platformers, like yoshi's island, super mario world, donkey kong country, etc. the dpad is fine. :)

Just arcade style shooters and fighters were it's really not...

It seems device can be overclocked :D at least to 1,6 at the moment. I will see how stable it is at 1,8.

No CPU throttling at all by the way.

It's how good the user is that counts. Xperia Play has one of the most flush d-pads around and yet I'm able to pull of Street Fighter moves flawlessly.

oh please =^) i hope that you mean " it's how good the user can press down hard and not scared to hurt their handheld" hmph

I actually got an XD today (thanks to a GPD developer).

yay thanks sony for sending the GPD XD to skelton  ;) did you include the free bag of weird noodles?

How do you over clock this?
How is battery life?
If I've learned anything from past devices I've bought is battery life is usually not that great.
This looks like a great new device.

The battery life is a-freaking-mazing. I am playing san andreas on highest settings, max screen brightness, and with wifi on for internet anime music radio streaming, there is no lag at all, and looking at drain it can do this for 7 hours on one charge. :)

I overclock it making a custom kernel. Battery life is pretty much the same, because the voltage level is similar.

What firmware do the latest models ship with? Is it worth updating right away?
Just ordered one and would would like have it run to its full potential.
Can I download the latest firmware directly to the XD without hooking it up to a PC or is that required?
Sort of new to these devices and just wondering what is the safest and easiest way without bricking the system.
Is there a step to step guide?
Sorry for all the noob questions but I've had some bad luck in the past.
