Guide to use roms on GPD XD?
« on: August 21, 2015, 10:13:32 pm »
I'm looking to get a GPD XD based on the great reviews.
I was wondering if there is an online manual somewhere, or a guide of how to get roms on the system. (NOT looking to find roms, just how they are copied across and used on the system)

Does it accept standard roms, or do they need to be patched in some way?
Are there inbuilt emulators, or can it support specific ones? If so, is that done via the Play store?

Thanks for any pointers

For roms, you can dump them with devices like the Retrode or use a flash-cart.
For CD-based consoles, you can simply dump them with your CD drive.
Sometimes, you can extract the roms from a compilation.

If you don't own any cartridges/cds, you could always download the numerous homebrew games on the net.

I'm not sure if there are built-in emulators but that's the case,
i would recommend against using them and just download them from the web.

PPSSPP, Reicast and RetroArch are probably the best emulators you'll find on Android.
Play!, a PS2 emulator, has an Android version but it is in work-in-progress. (never tested it though)

To be clear I'm not in anyway looking for info on where to find roms.

Just wondering if standard roms work, and its just a case of copying to the SD card?
I've not had an android device before. I've mostly been using a linux based PC like the Raspberry Pi, but I guess this is very different.

Yeah, just put them in your SD card and use the emulator's file browser.
Emulators on Android don't need crazy patching, they work just like their PC counterpart.

To install an emulator, you can:
1- Download the APK from your tablet using a browser and install it.
2- Google Play
3- Put the APK on a SD card, use a file browser and install it.

Thats wasnt me changing it to "gets" haha :)
I've updated it to read better now :)

So basically once you have the roms, it should be pretty easy to use the inbuilt emulators to point at them and play?
I would mostly be using systems from the 80s and 90s like Megadrive, SNES, Gameboy, maybe some PS1.

On my micro sd I just have a folder I created called ROMs and inside I separate by system and then I just have the emulators point to the needed folder

For the most part emulation on android works like emulation on a PC the programs don't care where you place your ROMs

@midknight That sounds good thanks, that would be easy to setup and maintain.
Do you point the emulators to the right place using their GUI, or do you do this in a command line interface somewhere?

What emulator do you tend to use for SNES and Megadrive?
