GPD XD strong enough for perfect PSX Emulation?
« on: December 28, 2016, 08:57:44 pm »
Hi!

I'm looking forward to buy a handheld for perfect (!) PSX emulation. As far as I know, the Nvidia Shield Portable is the most powerful handheld, but that thing is too expensive imo.
What do you think of the GPD XD for PSX Emulation (with ePSXe or an other good emulation app). Is the XD strong enough to play games, with OpenGL- Plugin enabled?
Are there any other handheld's available for PSX emulation? (I already have a PSP/PS Vita but they can't emulate all games and i don't want to convert every game to an eboot)

Thank you for your help! :D
greetings!

GPD XD and SHIELD portsble are very similar performance-wise. Epsxe runs fine with OpenGL Plugin, in fact i used it that way when i had it

PSX Games are running in perfect HD Graphics and are still smooth playable? That would be great! ;)
Did you noticed any graphical/audio issues or something?

At least the games i Play runs fine in OpenGL Mode. Some games have small glitches under OpenGL, but that happens in all? devices. To use OpenGL IS recommemded yo use OpenGL menu and adjust setting per Game.

But with Software rendering or Software+Shaders rendering enabled, there are no visible glitches?
When I buy the 16GB Version and use an SD Card to storage my games, would that be possible or should i buy the 32GB Version?
Should I install a custom Rom or stay Stock with the XD?

thank you!

You can store games un your sdcard with foldermount, You just need root.
In hardware or software Mode epsxe runs fine. Even pcsx-rearmed from retorarch IS a good alternative if You like shaders.
About firmware, for me it's easy to recommend legacyrom, because i did that firmware and removes the underclocked CPU speed of stock ROMs,  but stock firmware IS fine too, You would need to root it though to use foldermount. For stock firmware i recommend 3.4.2, because in later firmwares GPD chamged mali GPU libs that break Saturn emulaci?n. Though if You are not intetested in Saturn, any firmware IS ok.
My advice, begin to use it as it IS, and if You need extra speed and extra setting, them change to cfw. You can change firmwares easily in this devices so You can always instalo the want You prefer

I'm huge on PS1. It's what got me back in to gaming (I'm old). The XD is perfect - great controls, save states, the graphics look good on the small screen and not one crash yet after 13 months of daily play. I've played right through many games and am currently trawling through Duke Time to Kill. Pick it up, open it, right back in to where I last finished up. Can't be beat.

Is it true, that the sound is sometimes a little bit slower than the video shown on epsxe?
Is GBA,SNES,NES,... Emulation also very good on the XD?
What about the Charger Problem? A few listed on ebay came with no cable/charger and i don't know if a normal Smartphone charger works?

greetings and thank you all for your friendly help! :)

About the sound latency if you set it to low you won't notice it. Honestly when it's set to medium i can't see the diference.

GBA, SNES and NES are basically perfect, although some purists will disagree.

I would also like to know about the best option to replace the original charger. So far, i know that a fast charger will harm the battery, but that's it.

Great! Thank you!
Has anyone tested the GPD XD vs. the Nvidia Shield Portable? I found a thread in the Dingoonity forum, where the GPD XD is getting destroyed by some users...
http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-android-devices/disappointed-with-the-gpd-xd-(with-comparisons-to-the-nvidia-shield-portable)/
Is that true? The Shield is so damn expensive and I don't know if that is worth it for PSX Emulation...

For PSX emulation you won't find differences between shield portable and GPD XD, not even in PPSSPP. Shield Portable has some tegra games that don't run in XD, but XD runs better some emus like uoyabause or n64 thanks to openGL 3.0 support (tegra4 only support openGL 2.0 so some games requiring openGL 3.0 won't run in shield portable).

Both devices are quite different even being both clamshell. Portable has better analogs and shoulder buttons, but is les pocketable in my opinion and is a bit heavy for my taste. I sold it quickly just for that.
Anyhow, both are probably the best android handheld, so getting one or another you won't be wrong, both devices are good.
GPD WIN is even better, but price is also much higher.

Thanks!
When I flash the Legacy Rom (for OC 1,8Ghz), is it a completly new launcher/design or still the same as before? The XD i think i buy is from germany and has no Happychick or GPD Software installed...
And you said, everything from the built in memory can be copied to the SD Card. The 32GB Version would cost 22$ more (in Germany) but for 22$, I would get a larger (64GB) SD Card. Would that be the better option?

I use a 16 gb model And a 128gb memory And IS enough for me. I use foldermount app yo mover Android games to microsd. That decision depends pm your needs. My ROM IS pretty much an aosp ROM, with no GPD Launcher, no hapychcik And no emus. It's a clean rooted ROM with standard aosp Launcher.
You have all info here

Hello !
Nice buy !!
GPD XD is the perfect portable console for PSX , SNES ,MD,NEC,MSX etc etc .... the emulation is perfect. You will need to try some configuration for find your perfection and the last version of each emulator is recommended.
About PSX , i was using the last verion of EPSXE , very good emulator with a lot of options but in fact, even setting in " lowest latency experimental " options , there is a little lag with the action and the sound. Like 0.4 sec maybe ?
So , recently I prefer to use the last version of FPSE , there is no sound lag or if is : ( very unnoticeable ) and the graphic render is like original PS1.The bad point of this emu is that sometimes there is some veeeerry little ( close to unnoticeable ) crack sounds .... well , both PSX emulator are fantastic !
Wich games do you want to run on PSX ?or other emulator ?

I want to play the Old Blockbusters like MGS, MGS VR: Missions, Soul Reaver, Kula World,...;)
Are there any other good emulators for PSX? I only know ePSXE and FPSe

PCSX-Rearmed core From retroarch. There is also a mednafen core in RA, but it's too much for any android device.

Is there any advantage between the PCSX Rearmed Emulator and ePSXe?

ePSXe is more accurate in my opinion. But I prefer Retroarch shaders, so I use PCSX for 2d games with hqx shaders from Retroarch. For 3d games I use ePSXe with openGL plugin.

Which Settings do you usually use in ePSXe with Opengl?
I also don't know how to configurate the Controller with the D-Pad? I can't assign anydirection from the Right-D Pad...
