GPD XD Plus Headphone jack stopped detecting jack removal
« on: April 30, 2019, 01:25:28 pm »
I've had my GPD since at least January/February with no issues. Loved the lil' device but just recently I was using a new set of cheap but decent headphones on them and after only two days of using them the jack on the device seems to be stuck in 'headphone' mode.

All the things I tried to get the jack detection to work again includes:

- Tried removing and inserting the jack numerous times slowly.
- Rebooted the system and tried  removing and inserting the jack numerous times slowly.
- Power off with jack in plug, Power on with jack in plug then removing jack.
- Factory reset. (Didn't help and lost my settings so now I'm MORE cranky!)
- Trying different headphones (Both TRS and TRRS varieties).
- Carefully physically cleaning the jack with a wood pick.
- Trying to short the jack with a sewing needle to get the detection to unstick.

I love this thing and have been taking extreme care with it and yet this still happened. >.< And since my last attempts to install cleanrom failed horribly (Apparently it wasn't even the right version of the rom and instructions to do it were vague varied and unclear >.<) I have no idea what to try.

Even the GPD website I bought my system from (Wilgoo) has a broken contact form and no real email and GPD's contact information either seems to be broken or vaporware so I formed an account here seeing Dingoonity as the only 'support' or 'community hub' I could find.

I'm as convinced as I can be that this is some sort of software error as any hardware cleaning I've done has no result.

EDIT: Sound works fine but seems to be stuck on 'headphone' mode as the headphone icon will not go away. Programs that allow one to switch the speaker/headphones setup manually seem to work just fine meaning jack and speakers are working as expected, It's only the detection of the jack being in/removed that seems to be the issue. (And happened after shutting down system while VLC was playing music)

Do you the standard Rom on it?
I recommend downloading Cleanrom and flashing that.

It is much better than out of box experience and fixes several issues with sound / headphone jack.

Have a look on these forums for details.

As I already said in the post I have already tried this and it didn't work because the instructions were vague and I couldn't find the one that works for this build. This isn't the 'headphone jack causes speakers to play when inserted and headphones to play when removed' bug I had that when I tried to install cleanrom before as it turned out that because of how vague everything was I ended up installing the 'wrong' build for my device.

I would much rather have a non-stock rom but unless I can get some help with that I'd really like to just fix this headphone jack detection issue.

That was then now it's different, just grab the newest version of Cleanrom and flash it via SP_flash.

After installing Cleanrom there will be a setting to fix your problem.

I'll give it a shot. I last tried installing cleanrom in January with issues.

At this point I tried everything, Even the graphite powder tricks so I'll give it a shot. After the factory reset I tried it's not like I have any of my files to worry about on this at the moment! (Fortunately I backed up my libraries and stuff on my backup server first.)

EDIT: An android guru friend informed me this could be an issue with the fact all my headphones are TRRS and the GPD XD plus seems to only have a standard TRS jack.. But just tried a couple sets of ordinary TRS headphones to no avail. Will post here later to let everyone know if the rom flashing fixed anything.

Once you install CleanROM 2.x, there is a set of features titled CLEANROM SETTINGS within the main settings menu of the device.

Within CLEANROM SETTINGS, there is a setting entitled 'headjack/headphone polarity'. Unchecked will mean that the device can ONLY be played with headphones ON.  Instead, if you check the setting to REVERSE POLARITY, this will allow the device to play from the unit's speakers instead.

It's a fancy way fixing a bug that Black-Seraph encountered when creating this ROM. Basically, once you flash CleanROM 2.x on an XD+, the default setting will only allow users to hear sound with a headphone. Reversing that setting will remove the headphone icon from the top-right of the screen & allow sound to output from the speakers instead.

Hope this helps.

Yes, As I mentioned above my jack issue isn't the same as the 'jack detection reversed' issue but rather detection not working. The 'headphones are in' jack shows up constantly whether they're in or not.

I installed cleanrom no issues but when I tweak that setting you mentioned for polarity, Here's what happens:

Not reversed: sound comes out both headphone AND speaker at the same time regardless of whether headphones are plugged in or not.

Reversed: Same behavior I was experiencing before where headphone detection doesn't go away so the speakers never engage and a third party program to force the speaker or headphone is needed.

Detection still doesn't work. (Though I am much preferring cleanrom to the stock firmware so far.)

 The build number is now:

 XD Plus-CleanROM-V2.0.2.1-GPD-userdebug 7.0 NRD90M 1553860439 test-keys

2.0.2.1 was the only one listed on the cleanROM site.

That's correct 2.0.21 is currently the newest free one, for the newest building you have to become a patreon or wait 30 for to be free.
Sadly if installing CleanRom didn't help this means that most likely your XD+ is just busted.

I doubt that it's due to a busted unit. I would probably think that it's due to bad headphones. Get a different pair & see what happens, etc.

..Which I already tried and clearly mentioned in my original post.
