GPD XD PLUS and Android 9.0

With my (dayjob) boss squeezing overtime hour after overtime hour out of me I've found myself at a constant lack of time (for Patreon) over this last month.

As such, things have been moving slower than they should lately... given I only had about 2-3 days to actively work on things, but don't worry, there's been enough movement to warrant wrapping it all up into a fancy newsletter.

Over the last few weeks I've spent most of my spare time porting over Android 9.0 Pie to our GPD XD+ (along with Project Treble), but its a long multi-step process which consumes quite a lot of time (mostly spent in debugging issues).

Originally I had hoped to show you guys some more visual goodies, like the Android Pie "About Tablet" screen or something, but sadly, some HAL-related issues are still holding me back.

Due to this you guys have to settle with the patched XD+'s fdisk partition output for now, showing the freshly patched in (and populated) /vendor partition.

Long story short, I'm making good progress with getting our XD+ some badly needed Android upgrades!

I hope that by this time next month I will have some more visual updates to show for the less technically inclined people!

And that's it for now.

But before ending this newsletter, I want to use this chance to thank all of you for your continued support!

Is there any chance of having lollipop in the original gpd xd?

As good as that sounds it's extremely unlikely, Black-Seraph currently only works on improving and porting Android 9.0 to the XD+ and progress is very slow due his personal life and job.
And even porting Android 9.0 is happening by chance as there is a tablet with the same specs as XD+ which has Android 9.0 but even this can fail so let's hope for the best.

As for lollipop on the regular XD I remember someone working on it and got it working but apperently it was very buggy and never was finished, I dunno the details thou.
I remember Black-Seraph mentioning working on another project for the regular XD, thou I dunno what it is.

Another Black Seraph Update:

GPD XD+ Android 9 Progress Report
For those that follow the newsletter: You already know that the partition table changes, vendor and boot images all have been prepared already and that my sacrificial GPD XD+ unit is pretty much primed for the real porting work to begin.

As such I am currently digging myself through boot errors, blobs that need patching, selinux policy updates, etc... but how do I know what to change / patch / fix when the unit won't even boot at this stage?

This is where this little modification of mine became necessary.



What you are seeing here is a properly soldered (as in working) single-direction (TX -> RX) UART serial port wire-up.

Using this little modification of mine I can essentially see what my device is doing at all times by hooking up these two wires to a USB FTDI reader I have sitting on my desk.

Particularly interesting are the early-boot logs which I can capture this way (which shed some light onto what still needs patching / fixing).

The way it is right now this unit won't be winning a beauty contest anytime soon but it will give me the necessary information I need to drive this project forward and help in securing us this sweet sweet Android 9 upgrade.

What will Android 9 bring to our device? what's the difference with 7? And what advantages does 9 android have in comparison with the current 7? it's worth it? Will there be any victims like battery consumption or lag due to the weak characteristics for the new android?

Android 9.0 is also quite the improvement from 7.0 better memory management, battery life etc, there shouldn't be any leg XD+ isn't that old or weak, it fits in the middle range on smartphones.

I wouldn't say that, it probably just didn't move in a significant amount worth of reporting.
Remember Black-Seraph is just one guy that is working on this project, there's also other projects he works on as well as his day job and house, family responsibilities, so it's no surprise that this project is slow.
It wouldn't surprise me if there were days or weeks where he didn't have the time to work on this, not to mention the fact that it isn't easy porting android os from one device to another, even if they are similar.

Become a patreon and asked him yourself, he even said that if his patreon reached 2k I think, he would ditch his day job to work more on this and other projects.

The black-seraph website is down currently. Has the project switched to a new location or can updates only be found now on the Patreon page? I don't fancy donating only to find out the project has been stopped.
