GPD XD...New and clueless
« on: August 02, 2017, 11:36:14 pm »
HI Guys,

Forgive me for being daft but I just got my GPD XD today.  Few odd things.  Firstly the bag was ripped open and when I opened the box, the device was actually on and an almost completely dead battery....odd.

Everything was also in Chinese so it took me a few mins to find out how to change the language over.  I still notice all the games pre-installed along with the apps are in Chinese.

Can anyone advise me what to do and how I should start getting the best out of this little bugger? :)

If it's specifications are 5A, 2V and it's NOT a fast charger it's ok to use it. I just said the samsung s4 because some people (myself included) replaced for it and so far it doesn't seem to be any issue with the battery.

Legacy ROM is a clean and optimized custom rom, developed by skelton:

Think about it like a fresh install of windows for example. If you install it, and you won't regret it, all chinese games and apps will be removed. This way you can install just what you want.

It's not possible for this rom to break your device. Maybe in a theoretical scenario in which your device has a hardware defect, otherwise it won't. It's actually really easy to install it. Just a few minutes and that's it.

It seems complicated. That retrorob YouTube video warns you about doing it and there seems to be various different files to download argh.....sorry I worry about messing these things up.  Do I download these files using the gpd or do I just plug it into my laptop and do it all from there?   Sorry for being a pain.

cwalk I made a few written/video guides to try and help the new user out. Mainly non tech savy people.
Look over this list: http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/tutorials
But mainly the ones you may want to pay special attention to:
What is Legacy Rom? :http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/legacy-rom
How to install Legacy : http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/tutorials/gpd-xd-how-install-roms-unbrick-method

One of the reasons I love the GPD XD is because its just so easy to recover it if anything happens. Things will seem intimidating at first for people who arent familiar with mobile device flashing. Have a read through those guides. If you have any more questions just ask here, there are plenty of good people here to help you through it. If you want to proceed with doing it and have trouble feel free to let me know and you can simply log into irc and I can help you live. I have done it a few times and even set it up on my site so connecting to me is fast and safe and in one click:

Just know that dingoonity community is the #1 resource site for gpd xd ( at least that I have found ). So now that you found your way here, you should be good hehe =)

Thank you :)

I spoke to the head of IT in my work and he said for me to bring it in and he will sort it.

I would still urge you to watch the videos. The videos should show you how easy it really is.

Thanks, the Head of I.T. installed the Legacy Rom then reset the XD to it factory settings so all the garbage is wiped off and clocked it to 1.8ghz.

Any recommendations on Apps and sites for roms so I can get this little beauty up and running? :)

Also is it better to download roms manually and through my laptop, drag and drop the roms into their associated folders?

Thanks again guys.

I'd say install CWM but the process is the same as installing Legacy Rom. I can link you if you like, but if nothing else install kernel adiutor: http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/tutorials/gpd-xd-novice-guide-legacy-rom-18ghz
It basically lets you toggle your cpu that way you arent burning through your battery always at 1.8. Think of it as a turbo button on your home screen that you push only when you are running cpu demanding emulators like PPSSPP and Reicast.
