GPD XD, new 5 inch device with RK3288 (Rumours)
« on: March 05, 2015, 09:32:50 am »
I have some info about a new device from GPD coming to summer (or maybe later). This time they are using a "Nintendo 3ds Style", except there is only 1 screen. But good for those that prefer a 5 inch device quite portable probably:

About specs, they are not definitive, but this is the info I have:

- CPU RK3288  with Mali 764
- 2 GB RAM
- 16 GB internal flash + microSd slot
- 6000 mah battery
- 1280x720 IPS screen

I will post more info as soon as I get it, but good to see anyway that 5 inch devices are not forgotten.

This is really exciting news and I hope that GPD pull through on this soon..
Anything bigger just beats the purpose of a handheld gaming device and I also wish that they would stick with relatively lower resolutions so as to not compromise on performance and battery life-- This could be the next G5A!

720p is no problem at all for RK3288. I have a tvbox RK3288 and I use at 1080p.

Sounds promising. I'd love an android device with a slim clamshell formfactor. Not convinced with the button layout though. D-pad looks like it could be a bit awkward.

Layout seems ok to me. Some people will prefer analogs at the bottom, and some people the way it looks in the picture.

DPAD seems quite similar to Nintendo Dpad, which is ok for me.

Anyhow, the pictures are just a render, so it's too soon to know if controls will be good or not.

This could be great, I really like the clamshell form factor.

Specs seem great, but I'd prefer an upgraded G5A form factor.  A G5A with similar specs and just a few minor tweaks would be my ideal device!  As long as my G5A functions I probably won't buy a new android handheld (unless GPD makes an upgraded G5A)

About form factor is impossible that device likes everyone. I personally love g5a form factor too, but it's true that with this "3ds form factor" is more portable, even pocketable.

yes, i love G5A form factor too, but is very good that GPD bring a new form factor for devices that currently we can found on the market.

I think if they can copy the 3DS sliders then I wouldn't miss the usability of the G5A. Although I loved mine it wasn't exactly pocket friendly, getting a slim clamshell (so pocketable with no need for a case) is a good trade off for the proper sticks of the bulky G5A. If they screw the analogs up though it would be a huge disappointment.

Looks interesting.  Now if only they could cram a keyboard on that oddly barren bottom half and give us a budget alternative to the Pandora/Pyra, I'd buy one like a shot.

I was thinking that space was a bit wasted. A keyboard would be the nuts, or maybe a replaceable battery pack or a second full size SD slot?

keyboard is not needed. android on screen supply this.

i think there are other alternatives for this space.

first of all, i think may be a good improvement adding Z & C Buttons, and generate a 6x2 button layout (street fighter layout, not the GPD-G7 layout) of buttons for fighting games

the Gamebox Controller RING may be a good alternative to place on the center. adding android buttons and few other than may be good to be placed here:

Home
Back
Menu
task list
keymapper

(volume buttons i assume are in another place)

For me, as long as it includes back and Home buttons is enough. I don't need anything else, and adding a keyboard I guess it would make device more expensive, for something that I would never use.
It wouldn't be strange that battery is placed in the space we see as empty

I beg to differ as I find using an on screen keyboard incredibly frustrating.  A physical keyboard would be great for emulating the Spectrum, C64 etc, not to mention making my forum posts on Tapatalk a lot quicker!

I was absolutely gutted when the iControlPad 2 failed to materialise, and keep hoping that someone else will bring out a similar product.

I would also like a usable keyboard, I actually can't stand touchscreens for anything other than menu and browser navigation (which they are great for) and really miss the qwerty Android phones I used to have.

The keyboard on my cheap fly mouse is surprisingly usable, that was about ?6 posted!

ok, i understand your point, but think.

which keyboard you can put there that will be more comfortable tha an on screen keyboard?

there is no so much room space for a keyboard. for me, is more frustrating using micro-keyboard

take any 5" device, rest the space for sticks, buttons, etc... and try to put a comfortable keyboard on the left space.

Pandora or the new Pandora Pyra is probably the only 5 inch device with keyboard, so those wanting that you have it.

I never use a 5 inch device for web browsing or things like that, I just plays some emus (and I never play computer emus on Android), so basically it depends on the needs of different users. I understand all points of view though
