Just started about a hour ago. Getting a message during boot up to enter a password to decrypt storage. There is a field to enter but don't know what that is.

Seemed to start this behavior after ES File Explorer app asked about clearing cache. It cleared all cache and then another message came up to allow the app permissions to auto clear in the future, so I turned in that permission.
Then hit the home button on the unit and uninstalled the Sonic Racing Transformed app that was always crashing when trying to startup. My boys love that game.

So after all of that I decided to reboot and then was going to reinstall that Sonic Racing game.

Now I get this password screen. All black in color btw with only the field shown. Please help.

Probably esfile explorer screwed up the device, or bad emmc.

Truth is there isn't a real clear answer. There is some info here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdxd/comments/6rbmz7/enter_password_to_decrypt_storage_what_is_this/

Most likely if you do not have twrp or cwm you can not recover from this without having to reflash your rom and start fresh. This does not mean you can't look around and try and find a solution. I have tried to find a solution myself but never found a solution that didnt require one to reflash. If you do find a solution please share it as a few people have run into this issue multiple of times.

If you do have to reflash I suggest you use this guide: http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/tutorials/gpd-xd-ultimate-noob-guide

It will walk you through installing LegacyRom 1.8GHz (ext4), TWRP, TWRP Manager, and Kernel Aduitor. This will set you up with a nice solid build that will help you avoid having to start over in the future.

Do not be intimidated the guides are easy to follow. If you do run into issues please just let me know and I can help you through it.

I had this about a year ago, ended up having to reflash the OS. It's worked fine since, being used daily and with most of the internal 64gb being used by games so it looks like the internal nand is ok. I keep all my roms on external storage and savestates are usually in the same folder so it wasn't much of an inconvenience.
Handhelds:
GPD Win, GPD XD 64gb, Pap KIII-Plus, RS-97, RS-90, New Bittboy, 3DS XL, DSi XL, GBA SP, GBBC Clone, Gameboy Pocket, PSP Go,
PC:
HP Envy M6, Acer 522, Dell Mini 9
Psion 5 & 5MX
Tons of other old laptops and tablets.....

After doing some reading with your link from Redditt and another link from XDA Dev site, I would like to try to perform a reset or something before I flash again.

How do I do a factory reset? And will that keep the Legacy Rom or go back to the old GPD Rom?

Factory reset will reset the rom. so yes you will keep Legacy Rom. It just erases all user data.

power your gpd xd down. Hold vol+ then hold power down too ( so you are holding both down ), you will go to recovery and there should be an option for factory reset. Let go of the 2 buttons a few seconds after you see gpd logo.

Thanks, that worked.

Now I have to reinstall everything. How do I find out what caused this issue so I can avoid it in the future?

Was it ES File Explorer or Sonic Racing Transformed?

Those are the only 2 apps I did anything with before this happened.

Thanks again.

Under build number in "About Tablet" in settings what Legacy version do you have installed?

Reason I ask is you really should install a custom recovery so this doesn't happen again.

It says LegacyROM-XD Kitkat. The Kernal version is 3.10.0.

I restarted the GPD XD again just now and it did the exact same thing.
