Huge thanks for the help!

We had a 3+ hour live chat, and I think we fixed all the issues.

Super SU seems to work, Rom Manager backup is in place.

NP bud! Glad I can help. You can help me out my subscribing to my youtube channel at http://youtube.com/c/sectioneight:)  It will make it easier for others to find those videos.
Now that you know how easy backups are, you can try new things out on your own and then just restore if anything happens.

Keep my tut list handy : http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/tutorials .
I will add more tuts once I get this stuff figured out.

I know I still have the Legacy 1.8 thing to do, though not sure yet how to do that ;)

Actually I feel confident in your gpd skills now hehe. I will be on chat if you wanna talk but, Its really simple.

You should have placed the 1.8 backup where your other one was. ( externel_sd/clockworkmod/backup )
Reboot into recovery using rom manager or flashify ( from off position you can also boot into recovery by holding vol+ and power)
go to:  - backup and restore
go to: - advanced restore from external_sd
go to: the 1.8 backup file
go to: - restore kernel
after you do that you should have a (+) next to:  - restore kernel (+)
double check that only the kernel has the (+) and then:
select: - Start restore

and you should now have 1.8 kernel installed.

This will give you 1.8, but skelton ( creator of Legacy ) also included other "tweaks" to the rom that help. So my suggestion would be to install from scratch. A fresh install of legacy rom 1.8.

If you do want to go that route I could walk you through that as well. It would involve:
Flasing Legacy Rom.
Re-install Flashify
REFlashing CWM Recovery ( it gets overwritten on the last step so we have to reinstall )
Install Kernel Aduitor

and maybe some other stuff.... but your rig will be prime $$

Either way let me know. You know where to find me  :)
Re-install Rom Manager

Yeh I wasn't clear once again hehe. It's basically 2 options. You can do the first section and do the advanced restore OR you should just do a fresh install and start from scratch.

Actually I spoke too soon. I forgot you do have Legacy Rom, just not the 1.8. So yes just do the first section ( advanced restore ).

From there I can help you install other stuff to finish off your rig.

Okay. I will probably install a fresh version, but not for a while I think, time is gonna be pushed.

I'll do the kernel tomorrow. Is there any risks to it at all etc?

Since we got the supersu and root sorted out I dont think you need a fresh install. I think you are good. So yeh install the 1.8 GHz.
Risks are always the same with flashing stuff. Officially as the host to the file and the website sectioneight.net I would have to say that there is a risk of blah blah blah and I will not be held resposible for blah blah.  :)

If you want my own opinion, it's very little risk. I have already helped you make a backup and that is key. No matter what you can always go back to that.

I think I managed it.

How do I tell if it is now 1.8 ghz?

Cool. Well i would suggest you also follow this guide:

http://sectioneight.net/gpd-xd/tutorials/gpd-xd-novice-guide-legacy-rom-18ghz

It will give you a toggle at your home screen, so you can change speeds at a tap of the screen and you will know if you are st at 1.8GHz.

Might be an issue. I've set the first two profiles, but I have no option to set the third to 1800mhz!

Yeh I don't know if that would be enough. There is a few more options we can try to keep your data. Ill play with it and see what I can come up with. OH I also have been playing with twrp a different recovery and got it to work. The great thing about TWRP is that it has touch capabilities. It also has a manager app to assist like CWM has Rom Manager. TWRP Manager. So yeh we still have plenty of options.

Ok try this:

Grab this file: http://mendingheart.com/myfiles/Legacy1.8.zip
Unzip it and put it in your gpd.
Use ESFileExplorer to move it to : 0/android/data/com.cgollner.flashify/files/Flashify-backup/boot
* Now 0 you can get to by using ESFileExplorer menu
* or storage/emulated/0

Once you have file there start Flashify up: Swiper left until you are in Backup/Restore
The kernel should be under "Restore Kernel" : Legacy1.8

Try that then try making the 3rd profile making it 1.8  ( from the tutorial I linked you to )

see if that works.
