GPD XD Help with screen issue
« on: August 03, 2017, 01:15:19 pm »
I recently got a gpd xd for $50 with full knowledge of the screen being damaged but everything else being fully functional. I am going to assume that the whole screen needs to be replaced but I thought I would get some input before I do that. The screen has a dark tint like hallow effect on the sides and the colors are very dark. Also it somehow gets what looks like screen burn-in within seconds of what ever I am looking at. Has anyone had this problem or heard of this problem and knows what specifically is the cause if not the screen. I am a little hesitant on just going and buying the screen without knowing for sure that it's not a cable that needs to be replaced. Also does anyone know a trustworthy parts seller in the US as I am not to keen on getting the part shipped all the way from China through aliexpress and it also seems like the price doubled for a screen replacement since I think it use to be $30-$35 and now it is $70 or $81 with shipping(which seems to be a lot for the quality of this screen and for a bit more you could just buy another one). Has anyone had any luck getting there screen repaired at a cellphone repair shop or would that be a no go? I included some pictures though they are not the best quality since I had to use an old phone to take them (my galaxy s6 is in the shop for repairs). Also this url goo.gl/e3wK8J is the orignal to the rainbow picture on my gpd xd. Thanks for taking the time to read my rather scattered question and for any insight.

Funny thing: this started happening to me a couple days ago, but it hasn't been permanent.

Give the system a few sharp taps with your hands around the back of the screen and on the bottom and see if it goes back to normal. Mine fixes itself when I tap on the back of the screen towards the top left.

I'm about 90% sure it's not the screen, but the ribbon cable that connects the screen through the hinge to the motherboard. That and a collection of spare parts can be had for $20 on their store.

(it's the black cable in the top of the second image)

In your case it might not be broken, but the cable could be loose. If you want to try fixing that first, take the four rubber pads off the screen, remove the four screws underneath, and CAREFULLY pry the case apart. It will be tight on the bottom lip where the hinge is.

Sorry for the late response and thanks for your input. I opened up the screen housing and reset the three ribbon cables for good measure. The screen still had the same problem but I wanted to ask if you think there is any chance of  the other end of the black cable being loose.

I would try that too. Take the rubber feet off the bottom, remove the 4 screws and carefully pull the system apart like the screen shell. Be extra careful not to pull too hard since the ribbon cables for the shoulder buttons hold the two sides together. So carefully unclip those with a finger or a screwdriver and then pull it the rest of the way apart and reseat the cable.

Does tapping the screen or smacking the system make the screen go back to normal?
Otherwise you might need to order a new ribbon cable or god forbid a new screen. You might even be better off trying to get it returned from wherever you bought it in that case.
