Title: GPD XD+ Clean ROM
Post by: PsyOps on July 01, 2018, 06:57:50 am
Black-Seraph came through as expected. It is just a shame that we could not get him an XD+ sooner. The first thing he wanted to do before releasing his major LineageOS port was releasing a ROM that was super debloated, prerooted, and had an unlocked CPU. I have replaced my S8LightRom with his on my website for everyone to download.

You can call this the equivalent to Legacy Rom for the XD+.

This is his site, please look it over for rom info.
https://www.patreon.com/posts/19784613

Before anyone asks, no he did not fix the refresh bug issue. He will take that task on when he creates his LineageOS port. There is no ETA on the new rom because there are too many factors in play. ( time available and difficulty of port, mainly ) This is his way of leaving everyone with an alternative to the bad stock rom.

You will always find the latest build here :
Download ROM (http://xdrescue.com/gpd-xd-plus-help/gpd-xd-files/gpd-xd-firmwares/)
Instructions for install are at the bottom.

I've been using this since Sunday afternoon, only messed around with the general setup and SNES and Megadrive but is very good rom, fast and lightweight and stable so far.

I still have a problem with Nova launcher that it doesn't add apps to home screen when installed - I tick the option in the menu and it unticks itself - this seems to be something weird with the XD+ and Nova as it does the same thing on official rom, Psyops rom and now this one.
Very strange as I didn't have this issue on my old GPD or my other 3 devices with Nova.

I have a few questions on the matter.

How do You install it?

When You install it do You loose everything You installed previously and have to start over from scratch again???

Also will it finally play games like Battle Supremacy were Your system has to have open gl 3.0 to play it?

You can try installing over your current rom ( leave userdata.img unchecked ) but I would advise against it. It may cause problems with google play services. I would just start from scratch.

Rom : http://xdrescue.com/gpd-xd-plus-help/gpd-xd-files/gpd-xd-firmwares/

Tutorial: http://xdrescue.com/gpd-xd-plus-help/gpd-xdp-tutorials/gpd-xd-plus-how-to-install-or-update-firmware-unbrick/

As for performance this is  pretty much the same as stock or s8lightrom. But has unlocked CPU ( not like stock ).

Without a custom recovery I doubt, MTK roms usually require SPFLash Tools if no Custom recovery is available

I think I will just leave mi ne alone then. It has the lightrom. other then the fact I cant play battle supremacy or infinitie tanks on it, it works great, for me anyways. :)

I have a problem with Nvram warnings in WiFi connection.
Other people had this on the original factory Rom  but my device was always OK until this version.

Any ideas? (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180706/8abe85d702e705ab9ed2a256fb3c77ea.jpg)

Ok...I tried going back to Clean Rom version 0 and 0.1 and SlightRom and I have the NVRAM Warning in every Rom version now.

Looks like it comes from using the "format and download" option in SP Flash Tool.
I had to use that because my flash failed due to connection breaking.
Did anyone find a way to fix it?

Fixed it using this on XDA
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2730486
although I used ES Explorer instead of Root Explorer.

For sure something to watch out for if a flash fails for any reason.

Hi,

I just got my XD plus a day ago and flashed CleanRom 1.10.0.3 tonight.

Everything looks good, but I just noticed I have no sound. I tried headphones and found that when I plug them in, the speakers start working.

I have now noticed that there is a release note regarding this issue for the XD+ stock rom:

VERSION 1.11 - CHANGES
- Added a bug with speakers (they stopped working, and if you plug-in headphones - then the speakers start to work). The icon on the headphones is always on. If you turn on the headphones, the icon disappears and the sound goes from speakers.

The release note is a little unclear, but I'm assuming they're saying they fixed the bug (and not added it).

I was expecting to see other people reporting this... Is there a Clean Rom version that does not have this issue?

Thanks!

Ok so...

I just opened up an XD+ for someone I am selling a modded version. So it looks like there is a new hardware version of the XD+. Right off the bat I see that they now have a copper heat shield on it. ( very nice ) An now I am thinking the new version has a bug with it. I hope it is not hardware. I installed cleanrom on my older xd and it works great, but once I installed on the new one, the first thing i noticed is the headphone icon at the top. ( there was no headphones attached )

I have brought it up to the dev, he will look into it as soon as he gets time.

For the record, I found a "headset toggle" app in the play store that allows you to manually bypass the hardware switch and redirect the audio to the speakers. The headphone icon at the top stays, but the audio does switch to the speakers. It's not persistent through a reboot, but for now it works around the issue.

First off (before I get into my whining ;D ), I just want to say I've been using this ROM for a few days, and it's been 100% quick and solid. I can't recommend it enough (even despite the headphone audio bug I'm seeing).

As for the headphone audio bug, as I said previously, I found an app in the play store that allows you to manually toggle the audio output between the speakers. However, I quickly discovered another annoying side-effect of the bug: the volume buttons don't work correctly.

When you click on VOL-/VOL+, it brings the audio slider up on-screen as expected, HOWEVER, the buttons result in an adjustment to the phone audio, not the speaker audio. It's not the end of the world, you just have to tap on the down-arrow to expand the audio sliders and adjust the speakers by hand, but it'd be great to have a device that works as expected.

Any idea if a patch for this is on the devs radar? Thanks!

Two more audio related problems I am experiencing...

1. When you plug in headphones, the speakers are enabled and there's no way to disable them. This means you can't use it in public with headphones without everyone around you hearing it too (like I attempted to do in the dentist waiting room the other day.,)

2. No audio out over HDMI  :'(

Hello,

I just picked up a GPD XD Plus and - wow - it's quite zippier than the previous iteration!

I installed Clean ROM and it all seems to be working well, but I'm having a little difficulty with the Retroarch controls when compared to my original XD with the Legacy ROM installed.

Basically I can't seem to use the d-pad to navigate through the menus. I noticed in the Android input settings it is setup a little differently from my original unit.

Is there an additional controller profile that I should install or did I just not "click a box" in Retroarch?

Thank you in advance!

k so this is the update:

Quote from: Black-Seraph
Bad news.
I can now confirm there's a new model of the XD+ in the wild.
It's called the XD-VR
Nex and I were able to confirm that.
The problem though is that the latest kernel source we have is 1.10...
So we have no (easy) way of fixing the headphone jack on the XD-VR models.
I have however made a boot.img people can flash on top of 1.10.0.3 CleanROM.
Which is based on the prebuilt stock kernel from the 1.11 package.
As its a stock kernel, its limited to 1.8ghz...
But it can be flashed on the new XD-VR units to fix the headphone jack issue.
I'll make a new patreon post later tomorrow... its too late to do it now.
As for a source-based fix... I'll look into that later.... but for testing I'll always have to rely on outside people like Nex to test for me..

So what we know so far is, there are 2 models out of the xd+ now. One has the headphone jack problem and one does not. As explained by B, if you have the headphone jack you can patch it with the stock boot.img. This just means that you will not be able to overclock to 2.11GHz for now. Not sure if it will be able to get unlocked later down the road. For now we will worry about 1 problem at a time.

I also asked B if this will affect TWRP in any way. Waiting for a response to that.

In theory latest commits in kernel should help, but someone else would have to compile it and try. Not sure if Black did, probably yes I guess.... but someone can try:

https://github.com/skelton/android_kernel_mt8176_common/commits/master

Bad move anyway to release two batches, that means two different kernels from GPD, or just using a stock one.

Clean rom patch, read this over: https://www.patreon.com/posts/20854772

This is only for people with the newer hardware revision XD-VR. Anyone with the headphone bugs have that model.

Quote from: Black-Seraph
Sorry to say that the drivers are identical in all revisions we have seen so far.
The lowest driver revision we've found in the wild for the MT8176 on nougat was 1.6...
The one in use on all revisions of firmware on the XD+ is 1.7.
Both are buggy as hell, and due to their proprietary nature out of reach for us to manually fix...
Also, nex is the proud owner of one of the new "XD+ VR" models.
GPD silently rolled out a new model of the XD+ with slightly different audio hardware...
Just different enough to cause us enough trouble to force us to release a patch to fix it manually again.
Essentially... if you guys install CleanROM and suffer from headphone / speaker issues, please install this newly published fix on top of it: https://www.patreon.com/posts/20854772

This fix is XD+ VR specific... aka. only works with the new XD+ models they are now shipping.
Older / launch XD+ units can just install CleanROM without this fix.
The easiest way to tell if you need this fix or not is by checking the status bar after CleanROMs first boot.
If it shows a headphone symbol without any headphones plugged in, you are the proud owner of one of the new XD+ VR models (to which we don't have the full kernel source yet), meaning that you need this fix...
Or if it doesn't, then you are the owner of a launch XD+ model, and you are good to go without the fix.

I encountered this problem about a week ago after flashing CleanRom 1.10.0.4 (to fix the speaker bug on my XD+ VR). I had previously been running CleanRom 1.10.0.2 for a few weeks without a single WiFi issue.

I fixed it by going into TWRP (power on while holding VOL+), doing an advanced wipe of everything, doing a factory reset, then a power off. I then fired up the flash util and reflashed the rom. My WiFi is working 100% again, give it a try, hopefully it works for you too.

@votemarvel

Attempt to then install CleanROM .3 or .2; i've heard from various users that switching from .4 (rev1 or 2) alleviates the wifi issues.

Cheers!

@stpat

Good eye with that piece of advice; a clean sweep of ALL files is usually a wise move given that bugs/virus/corrupt files can usually cause unwanted glitches, etc. I usually do a clean sweep when flashing new versions of CleanROM as they come out & have found that to really be the best way to keep things working smoothly.

Cheers!

The fix suggested by @stpat did not work for me (same wifi woes coming from stock 1.10 to CleanRom 10.0.4).

I found a working solution here: https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdxd/comments/9872vn/wifi_problem/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdxd/comments/9872vn/wifi_problem/)

I flashed stock rom 1.12 with SP Flash Tool, and CleanRom immediately after.

My Wi-Fi is rock solid now.
