GPD XD - Can Someone Help me Upgrade to a New Firmware?
« on: June 14, 2016, 10:41:47 am »
My device is being strange, sometimes it doesn't boot, retroarch just hangs, bunch of other things...

I don't know if I need to root it, or if it's already rooted. The system upgrade function does nothing.

I downloaded 3.4.6 English firmware update. I installed the drivers on my windows 7. I attach the XD via usb, open the RKPatch program and there are no devices to install the .img file to.

I can open the Android Tool and it says 1 ADB device found, I go to upgrade, load the image, and it says "Match device type failed, stop running"

So I'm kind of stuck here. I have read threads but there doesn't seem to be anything that addresses this issue specifically. Do I need to root this thing? Am I better off running a custom ROM? Is there a better or easier way to upgrade it?

I put the .img on the SD card but it doesn't do anything when it boots. I tried power, home, volume+ trying to get into a recovery but nothing ever happens?

I'd appreciate any help. I love the device, just have some little niggling problems with it I hope a firmware update might improve things.

HI, insert the sd card (with .img file) while the device is ON. automatically, upgrade message pops up and then it should install the needful.

Okay, well putting the update.img on the sd card and putting it in did put the system into recovery mode, but I get an error, the update fails.

I'm using 3.4.6 from this thread http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/lets-talk-xd-issues/

Am I doing something wrong? I did do a factory reset.

Oh, and thanks for the help so far.

Try with an sdcard formatted to fat32, or a different sdcard.

Retroarch is a trainwreck of a program. I'm really not surprised you had trouble with it. No, really. I like the fact that it's free and has no ads, but that's the only positive thing it's got going for it. I will never be anything other than deadpan serious about my hatred for that program.
PGS: Let the trainwreck continue to unfold.

I never had a single issue with retroarch, not as simple to use as other emus, but more accurate in some cores. Their last FBA core works great for example.

Which Retroarch cores specifically do you find to be more accurate or just run better than their standalone counterparts?

G?nesis gx plus for example. Mgba for gba or vba-m. Nestopia for nes.... fba is more accurate than fba4droid. Mednafen pce more accurate than pce.emu

What are the benifets from this new firmware?
Still running the original firmware and everything works great so not sure if I should update or not.

What I like about Retroarch is that it gives me the opportunity to choose between different cores for a system and even choose within a core different versions. From my experience there is nothing that comes close on Android to the bsnes Super NES emulation in Retroarch and the possibility to choose from 3 different accuracy levels (accuracy/balanced/performance) is really nice, as some games are more demanding then others.
Same goes for the GBA emulation, several games only run on certain emulators (Iridion I+II for example), so it's really nice to have the different cores within 1 program.

Earlier versions had a terrible menu structure and I found the handling of different configurations a nightmare, but the developers really improved the usability during the last 12 months or so.

I have read that the safest way to update the firmware is by having the GPD connected to a PC, but how exactly do you update it that way? I have also heard that turning the GPD on or off while charging can wreck the screen. Please could anyone with experience advise?

I can't believe GPD don't have a proper FAQ and guide online : (

Detailed instructions how to flash the firmware of your GPD XD in the opening post of this thread:
http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/(rom)-legacyrom-kitkat-for-gpd-xd/

The charging issue was an issue with the first batches of GPD XDs, it was possible to damage the device by powering it off while charging. In later batches this issue was fixed on the hardware level and GPD patched the firmware so that the damage SHOULD not happen to the early batches either, but as it is a software fix for a hardware problem, it is better to be safe then sorry and to not power the console off while charging.

His English in explaining it isn't very good nor are the steps detailed. I'm looking for something explained better so I don't mess up my device.

Well, sorry for having a bad english, but it's not my native language.

Anyone is free to do a more clean guide to you, but I think it's quite well explained.

How can it be more clear? The guide is very detailed and easy to follow. If you can't follow this guide then maybe flashing the device with a new firmware is not something you should do in the first place.

Try this if you want install it from your PC: (It will reformat your device)

https://androidmtk.com/use-rockchip-batch-tool

Or just copy the update.img that comes with the firmwares to your sdcard, and system will ask you if you want to update. Click yes and system will be updated automatically. With this method you don't lose your current data.

You can get the firmwares from this post:

http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/lets-talk-xd-issues/

Is this clear enough to you?
