Interesting, the drawbacks you mention are not minor, but hopefully can be solved by a firmware update.

Anyway, did you get a prototype or a final device?

i figure is a final version, but hope the firmware is prototype (alpha/beta)

with ROOT, most problems can be solved
well, with ROOT and USB drivers (for getting a way for recover the device, if get bricked)

Too bad if there is no SD slot. Absurd. I hope they make a rooted firmware. I have high hopes in GPD products, but it seems this clearly is not a decent one with all these drawbacks. I hope Skelton can give a hand.

The device is a RK3188, but is limited to 1.4GHz. Without root, i can?t change governor (default is interactive) and antutu is reporting under 20000 points (GPD-G5A with skelrom is around 25000, using similar SoC).
Note: I?m running with screen at 720p

Epic Citadel result is 39.8fps, when with this SoC must be over 50fps

Tekken DR must be running well with this SoC (in performance governor), but i can?t get it to run smooth.

again, most of these problems may be solved with a rooted device... and i'm not sure but may be the SoC come limited to 1.4GHz. may help a lot if there is not limited to this speed (as i know, RK3188 may run at 1.6GHz... or even may be overclocked a little bit more, but with 1.6GHz is fine)

well, i keep waiting for rooted version of the device.

and... please, add the navigation bar to the launcher. Is hard to use the device without this. (i avoid using the default launche, because i really don?t like it. i prefer nova launcher o any other similar, and there is needed to add the navigation bar to the firmware to use it with normally)

Speaking of GPD, I was curious to check news about the Q9, and cannot find GPD's website. Have they removed it or something?

the device inform that there is a new update, but cannot donwnload too...

I found it but it seems to be down.

The website is http://www.gpd.hk/ but it is definitely down and not in cache by google. Strange, it wouldn't be very surprised if they have changed their name or even worse, if they have just gone out of bussiness

Unfortunate, because when I read you saying that the Q9 may be already out in China I started digging into it, and the Antutu benchmark I found plus the saturn dpad makes this a must-own.

Reicast is not too demanding, in fact my gpd g5a runs almost all games full speed.

I wouldn't trust too much in Antutu scores for anything. I have a RK3288 box and it is about 40000. (it's 1080p though)

The difference between RK3188 and RK3288 is not great on emulators though, it's more noticeable in Android games due to GPU.

About gpd website, thay have also the softwin page, so perhaps they just changed it to it. But they are not out of business or whatever.

Nice pics and information you brought us, Deen0X. Just out of curiosity, you said that the device has the internal sd slot, and 5gb for the data partition. I'm supposing that these 5gb would be from the internal memory, and not from the sd card, right? So, the internal memory would be something around 8gb? Also, can you just replace this microsd card, and it works fine?

you can replace the SDCard, yes, in fact, there is fullfit of roms and games (creacked games) to be installed on the device.
i changed for another clean and there is no problem with this.

the main problem is data and app partition is the same, this mean, you really cannot use the microSD for installing app. in fact, you can use the device without any microSD on it, and you will be able on installing apps and data on the 5GB (realy are around 5.9GB).

this is the biggest problem. there is no way to configure the device to use microSD as sdcard for installing apps. the device always use the internal memory.

with root, we can bind the "android" directory to another directory in the microSD or even in an USB drive, for installing large game files from playstore. (similar to the Bind4Swap method i posted on my blog)

@Deen0X -- Did you try using root genius to root? Works on a lot of Chinese devices...especially rockchip, mediatek

Hi.

the main problem of the device for rooting, is that there is no way to connect to PC by USB, then any of the method that need plug the device to PC will not work.

the USB port 1 is able to be connected to PC, none of the drivers i tried from RockChip worked. As i understand... the way for connecting USB is not standard. (even, i research to found a USB to USB cable for this device)

note that there is not a typicall microUSB port for connecting to PC. Inside the device there is no ports too.

of course, i tried many ways to root, including method with wireless adb, but none of them is working.

i have a last chance for trying, but i will try at last thing, because most probably will brick the device. Before i need to finish the review.

for now, as i mentioned the controlled come broken (the USB receiver), then i can?t test it properly, until GPD send me another for testing.

my impressions for now are good with the controller. I have a Tronsmart Mars G01, that is a good X360 alternative, with good quality materials and building.

the GPD Mars controller looks nice, feel solid on hands, and the extra functions looks interesting as generic controller for android.
I think is an interesting device to be consider as an android accesory.

Again... as i mentioned previously, i cannot use any method that requires USB connection to PC. (there is no successfully way to connect the device to PC)
