I assume this will be an Android based box for the TV rather than a handheld? Anyway, I would be interested to test the unit. I would also be keen to try out any new version of the G7 as long as it has a better screen.

Best wishes,

There is no new version of g7 with better screen. q88+ is the only one with IPS. It will be some time till replacement for g7 is  made (probably with RK3288 I guess)

So, testing will imply buying the item.

By the way, do these things can be plugged to old tvs without hdmi?

Most of them are only HDMI, I only saw a couple of models with AV. No idea about this particular device.

Hi Kelvin,

Looks really nice from the back. Any chance of a look at the device? Or is it secret right now?

I'm keen to test if you need someone from New Zealand to check the PlayStore limitations, which we do have on some things over here.

Looks good Kelvin!

Just a couple of questions for now:

- Will this support the Android play store?
- Can the device be powered on/off using the controller?
- Is English language supported?
- Does the controller include a rechargeable (via USB) battery or does it take AA/AAA batteries?
- Does the system include Bluetooth, or does it require a Bluetooth dongle (it looks like a dongle is plugged in)

It does indeed look good. Thanks for the video.

To follow on from ClawShrimp's questions.

- Is the menu customizable? Can we rename icons, uninstall unwanted factory apps etc?
- Can we install apk from external media such as SD card?

yes, i try to get in touch with GPD to get some info about these devices (G5A+ and G7+), but for now i don?t have any response.

i think too that GPD is waiting for new SOCs for updating these upgraded devies, with better SOC (and become more interesting for market).

and for Gamebox, i get interested on testing and improving this device. ^_^

So kelvin, wirh just a simple cable like this, (used on psx or first xbox) I can get it to work on my tv?

If the image you've shown me is of the device, and it works in an analog tv, then I might get really interested!

Found more info:

http://easysmart.com/supports/make-old-tvs-smarter-by-connect-android-mini-pc-tv-box-via-av-cable.html

Besides the scart socket, my tv also has the yellow/red/with sockets for video and audio.

It would be good to be able to connect those keyboard+mousepad small wirless devices to use the box for other purposes, like searching videos, browse web with  mouse pointer visible

Looks good Kelvin!

Just a couple of questions for now:

- Will this support the Android play store?
A: yes, this Game+Video box is based on Android 4.4 OS.
- Can the device be powered on/off using the controller?
A: yes, can be, while you use 2.4G wireless.
- Is English language supported?
A: yes, will be English normally and other languages depends on OEM market.
- Does the controller include a rechargeable (via USB) battery or does it take AA/AAA batteries?
A: Lion battery which can be charged.
- Does the system include Bluetooth, or does it require a Bluetooth dongle (it looks like a dongle is plugged in)
A: Bluetooth included.

Kelvin, perhaps it's too late, but have you considered using the new RK3288 or Amlogic s802/s805 chipsets?

For gaming RK3188-T at 1.4 ghz is a bit old and have some difficulties when playing at 1080p. Or perhaps in the future you can consider a new modeil with RK3288.

Post by: Melquiades on July 17, 2014, 11:24:32 am
Maybe this will be of interest to you, as this is very important to a lot of people:
- The box has a physical On/Off button so it can be not only turned off but disconnected. No offence intended but I like electric devices, specially cheap ones, to be able to be completely disconnected at night without having to unplug them, which is always a mess. Also, make sure the converter is better and safer than the one included with the G7.
- Most gamepad and joysticks can be used off the shelf. Adding drivers for wired 360/Ps3 controllers it is always a good idea. This will be used often as an emulator device, and arcade sticks should run fine.
- Technical specs are important, but the most important one for me is not having any lag (input lag of the controller or display lag, a variety of native resolutions should be offered so that the TV do not have to scale).
- 2 o 3 USB connections are a minimum.
- Google Play support. I believe GPD always includes this, but it is worth reminding as for me not having it is a no-no.
- Get feedback from the users for the controller. To me the ideal controller would be a saturn pad with two analogs placed in PSX style, and 360-esque bumpers and triggers. I suppose we are all fed up of 360 controller clones, try something new and raise some eyebrows  ;)
- Release the sources so the community can develop ROMS and keep the firmware as light as possible, without bloatware. This is always a plus and will affect the first reviews.

That's it. I would like to test it, but I won't have a lot of spare time in the following months.

this i think is so interesting, if yoy plan to serialize a specific product. This way is easy to see evolution of a device, and adding new features for new versions of this.

I don't usually like these kinds of things, but this looks to be one of the better Android TV boxes for gaming. I really like the interface/launcher, much better and more useful for TV than the Mojo's stock Android launcher. As stated in the other thread, the controller looks really nice too, and I'm glad there's a power button as well. So far, so good.

I would love to test one of these, please contact me when they are available!

Will the test units have the option for either rk3188 or 3288 or will there only be the 3188 for the test? I'd love a 3288 since I already have a 3188 (G7) and I could just hook that up to a TV, but I might consider a 3188 Gamebox if it's $50....

Will the Game box 3188 still be 1.6ghz, or higher? What Gpu does it use? Still Mali400 like the G7?

If it's like g7, most probably will be a 3188-T model clocked at 1,4. So you woud need an overclocked kernel to reach 1,6, like it happens with g7.

Yeah that doesn't surprise me. Since RK3288 tv boxes from other manufacturers are already hitting the market I'm hoping GPD can have a 3288 option for the launch, the RK3188/mali400 might be good for 1024x600 tablets, but a 1920x1080 Tv box could probably use more power if it hopes to do more than just run emulators...

could i make a suggestion regarding the plastic? it might not seem like a big deal but to me a matte plastic looks and feels a lot better than something shiny. the finish on the G5A is great, something like that would be ideal for both controller and console.

i have high hopes for this box and would be especially interested in the RK3288 variant when it's available!

I second this. The finish on the G5A is lovely, even if it seems slightly cheap at first. Honestly, anything other than shiny plastic would be great.

I think you'd have an easier time marketing this product if you sold it under a less-generic sounding name than "Gamebox".  :P

I agree that 'gamebox' is too generic; but in all honesty I am not at all concerned with the devices name...nor the aesthetics.

For me, the look, feel and name of the console isn't an issue.

Seconded.

This thing is going to disappear into my entertainment center so I don't really care how it looks or what kind of plastic it uses as long as it isn't absurdly out of place (if they make it bright pink I might have a problem...)

My main concern is the power of the system being up to par and the functionality of the interface for daily use or stability. If it crashes a lot or has major bugs with operation, I'd much rather those get fixed.

True, once it's out of the box and hooked up you won't be paying much attention to the console itself, it'll just be a lump of plastic sitting next to your TV doing cool stuff. But keep in mind we are informed consumers, familiar with GPD and what they're making. I was trying to consider how GPD would reach the uninformed consumer, make their device stand out from the crowds of other Android TV gameboxes listed on Aliexpress etc. I'm sure many consumers' eyes glaze over at the thought of comparing spec sheets of competing products, a unique name and a cute mascot can go a long way for making an impression on the average consumer's mind.

I was wondering about the price cut for testers. I found other same rkchip devices for about 60 dollars. From this point of view it doesn't seem that great deal.. I mean, if full price is around 100$.

Here's one: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Q7-TV-BOX-RK3188-Bluetooth-v4-0-Android-4-2-External-Wifi-Antenna-Ethernet-Port-with-2-4GHZ-wireless-Air-Mouse--Black-324259.html

Same chip, different rom and interface (no gamepad). Will this justify gamebox's final price of ~100$? (Concerning firmware quality and having a gamepad)

I must admit , I have no interest at all for a RK3188 console .   If you launch a RK3288 console running Android TV later on, then yep there would be interest. Otherwise Ill be looking at one of the Android TV consoles with a Tegra K1 that are planned later this year from the US. Or perhaps even an Ouya 2 if it has a Tegra K1.

I disagree, for many Android is used for:
- Emulation
- Casual gaming.

Casual games do  not usually require much power. Emulation requires basically to reach "power milestones". Now that PSP and DC emulation is possible with RK3188 and similar devices there is a long way until GC or PS2 are emulated.

Right now, I believe an android console is attractive mostly depending on the controls and some other stuff, mostly screen and battery. I don't care if it comes with a Tegra or an Allwinner, as long as the controls are good. I won?t pester again against the G7 dpad, I will just say I am waiting a JXD S7800b right now and in a few months I will get a Q88+. After that I will keep the one I like for classic gaming and sell the other ones. Don?t care about ram or anything.

I'll pay $40 - $60 for just the controller. Sign me up.

sorry for long time out service, please check this video.
We have 80% finish.
This is Chinese version, i have English version also, but the Video center i only have Youtube and XBMC.

But as you can see, Chinese video tool can have more than 10 nice ones, i am thinking also Russia or Spain have the local tools which people use oftenly.
Can you friends help to give some idea?

Would love to see the user interface if the video loads. The video is giving some errors. Region errors maybe Will it be possible to upload it on youtube?

I did not get to watch the video. However, suggesting few things.

1. Include an option to get a remote as well. Some users would not always want to use it for gaming and would not prefer to use the gamepad to navigate.

2. Please include inbuilt support for xbox 360 controller (wired and wireless). Many users already have existing gamepads which they would like to use. Logitech controller drivers would be a plus too. :)

For XBMC use BeyondXBMC or SPMC builds which are more optimized for RK devices.

Also. if you are using 3188-T, you should allow override T values, since boxes are completely stable with 1,8 ghz too

Looks pretty good. For anyone having trouble watching the video, just be patient... Once it turns black, it plays shortly after.

Kelvin, the audio on King of fighters was a bit messed up. Was there a reason for that? The game seemed to be running full speed.

video worked  ;D

Saw 3 different models. Are those test devices? Or are they with different hardware specs?

Also, are you current working on a rk3288 model or only a RK3188 model will be released right now?

Thanks Kelvin.

I would still love to see how this performs with most emulators.

We've now only seen one game running via emulator (King of Fighters) and as BaldMonk mentioned, the sound was messed up.

If you have a g5a, you should expect the same performance, since it's the main chip.

I am not surprised about the King of fighters bad sound. Most probably is using a happy chick emu or something like that

Thanks Skel.

I'm totally happy with the emulator performance on my G5A.

As long as I can install the emulators of my choice (I can't stand Happy Chick) I'll be set.

I too am happy with g5a emulation, but is there any difference between this box and using a generic rk3188 tv stick connected to a Bluetooth/usb controller other than a controller with a headphone jack? As you can get the rk3188 stick with 2gb Ram with microsd slot, usb slot and Bluetooth with beyond xbmc for less than ?30 delivered and then use an ipega Bluetooth pad ?14-20 delivered and connect up your external hard drive to solve storage issues, and install the apps and emulators you want.

However I am still interested in this. Any news on a release date?

Software and a gamepad. Oh and also analog tv connection. These are the strong points. I really want this  ;D

Wifi and system stabilty is also better in a box than in a stick. I have had rk3188 boxes and sticks, and I personally prefer Box format.

Great. Also your suggestion for upping the clock rate seems a great way to keep the device from being outdated too early.

Ahh I can't for this. Xmbc, emulators....  8)

UPDATE:

Another important thing - button conflict! Beware this issue, it's really annoying to press x y z button with others and something else happening, like, go to desktop while in a game or blocking the movements, etc..

I'd forgotten about this.
Guess it's shelved? Or back to the drawing board? We did give a lot of feedback. Perhaps it's being implemented?

As far as I know, project is still going on. Thay have presented it at the recent IFA berlin.
They are producing also a model with RK3288, so perhaps that's the reason of the delay, but no idea to be honest.

I was also planning to get a rk3288 tv box. I guess I will wait for the GPD device with the rk3288 SOC. :)

Hi all, I've been reading this blog from a few days ago and I'm looking for a touch panel for gpd-g7 since it broke ... I see you have extensive knowledge of this console and wanted to know if I could help with the screen because I can not find anywhere and you do not know if there is such a replacement. display model is ly-fyx 123 070f.
