GPD G5A or G7?
« on: February 21, 2014, 07:23:13 am »
Actually I already ordered a G5A but I was a bit torn between the two before I finally decided. The main factor that made me go with the 5" is that I already own two 7" inch gaming tablets, a JXD S7300 and S7800.  The 5" has the advantage of being more portable but I do love those big screens!

So for anyone with both models, which do you prefer and why?

I also see that there may be "+" models coming out with better specs and IPS screens. I figure if I like the G5A I'll wait for these to be released and then pick up the G7+.

It was confirmed by GPD representative on forum. Please wait for my interview with him next week. This question is covered as well.

I just went ahead and ordered the GPD G7 (I love the big screens too.) There's always something better coming out and I figured the G7 met my needs for now. That should last me two years (the length of time I had the 7100b) and by then the game systems will be emulating PS2 (wishful thinking  ;).)
Handhelds: 3DS XL, GBA SP, PSP, GP2X Wiz, JXD 7100B, JXD100, Various other handhelds that include emulators and built-in games (their generic names escape me at this moment but some are actually cool.)
Tablets: Nook HD+, Entourage Edge
Consoles: XBOX 360, XBOX original, PS3, Wii, N64, 3DO, GameCube.

Some pics for comparison GPD G5A (white) vs GPD G7 (black).

I haven't been able to achieve diagonals on this G7 DPad unless I press the exact diagonal very hard. Maybe it is defective. It does not look the same as the G5A. It seems sitting a bit higher.

The ergonomics of G5A are much better for my hands. The smaller shape for the finger locks the hand in place in a very natural way.

As it was commented before G7 buttons are slightly smaller.

I hope I didn't make a mistake getting the G7. I wonder why they would change the button size the analog sticks?

I think there is at least one thread about the dpad on some chinese forums.

It is a pity that the G7 is not just an upscaled G5 with select/start/volume buttons on front or other minor adjustments.

Some extras about the G7

WIFI is good for me (same as G5A and good phones)

Processor runs at 1.4

It came with a dead pixel

And I have to insist. I feel the grip on the G5A much more secure.

Yikes! This is what I thought it would be. I figure I should manage with it okay since I haven't been spoiled by the G5A.  :)

@tincore,  was your experince with the g7 enjoyable when playing retro games with the dpad? or frustrating?
Im still waiting for my g7 to arrive but Im not sure now, I feel like the g5a might have been better despite the battery life.

Thanks for the comparison tincore, looks like I may have made the right choice in the G5A.
I'll be waiting for your opinions as well skelton, I can tell you already like the G5 so your opinions on the G7 should be interesting.
Plus the fact that some of you custom firmware guys are endorsing these units is another plus in my book!

My impression of the dpad is not good. The transitions between directions hardly go through the diagonal. At least on mine.

I agree with tincore. The dpad is not very good at all. I have to push pretty hard on it just to register the 4 main directions let alone the diagonals. I also have issues with the L2 and R2 buttons. I have to push on the very bottom of those triggers for them to work.
All in all though, it is my favorite unit for emulators. I'm very interested in any newer units GPD comes out with because I think they can easily improve some things which will make it very close to perfect.
A new dpad, tighter L2 and R2 buttons and an IPS screen would make it just right!

Looks like I made the wrong decision ordering the G7. I am going to check to see if it is too late to cancel.

Well, for gamestreaming (my primary concern) it can be ok since modern games dont use the d-pad as much, its still better than most other 7inchers as I cant find any other gamepad which has L3 R3. Mine should arrive on tuesday, I hope it doesnt have the L2 R2 button issue.

Can the D-pad be hard modded? has anyone ever done this?

Well for the G5A I would like to try an old XBox S Dpad, it's a little smaller but nicer IMO. I may just start collecting broken controllers, Mrs. Lemmywinks would love that!
Handhelds:
GPD Win, GPD XD 64gb, PlayGo, RS-90, 3DS XL, DSi XL, GBA SP, GBBC Clone, Gameboy Pocket c/w screen mod, PSP Go
PC:
Medion Erazer, Toshiba Z20t, Dell Mini 9, Psion 5MX
Tons of other old laptops and tablets.....

I think you can try with a bigger circular piece of plastic glued on top of the dpad. That could provide enough leverage on the diagonals.

Is there anywhere to watch a tear-down of the GPD G5 or the GPD G7 ?
Or is anyone willing to make one ?
